Cowslips Warren posted:When I was debating about coming out, DTWOF was something I started reading, and while it didn't help much (because gently caress you Sydney she was always the worst) in terms of what to expect, it did humanize gay people overall because the only ones I knew of otherwise were Elton John and Ellen. I remember that strip! DtWOF was a weird part of my childhood, since Bechdel's strips ran in the weekly free paper. Imagine being 8 and your funny pages are DtWOF, Doonsbury, and like a bunch of oddball local artists complaining about the local government.

I skimmed past that comic because I had a lot to catch up on today and it was a lot of text, but now you've enticed me to scroll back up to it.

My father has the unfortunate habit of quoting things he finds funny with absolutely zero context. For a lot of my youth it was him misquoting Mike Meyers movies and also just this Farside punchline. I had repressed this memory until now. e: Apparently this is a comic universally beloved by dads and stepdads Somebody fucked around with this message at 00:52 on Jul 25, 2022 |

I personally would love to see a gang tag that says "Wilbur is Cool"

I think a Jucika tag would be rad too, but maybe it's just time for me to get a new av

I gotta say, I'm enjoying Zelda a lot more now reading it next to DTWOF. Part of me was sort of depressed reading DTWOF and seeing just how relevant a lot of the "current" events were still. But I think more than that, both capture that energy of being a neurotic, socially conscious, kind of up your own rear end young adult that is apparently timeless.

I gotta say, I really love the shirts in The Dinette Set. I would wear both of these in a heartbeat.

curtadams posted:I think the Saturn Return arc is less funny than average for Bechdel, although not remotely enough to drop it. Astrology is also less known to the public now because of the decline of newspapers. Everybody used to know about astrology signs from a column with vapid predictions by sign on a page very close to the funnies (facing it in my childhood newspaper). Now you don't find out about it unless you look for it. But like voluntary communes, people still know enough to understand the jokes. I didn't actually know what a "Saturn Return" was at the time it came out and I didn't feel I needed to learn it. (I note Harriet doesn't seem to know what it is either). That's some pretty fair logic, but I think people still extremely into astrology. Coworkers at my last office job, all late-20s to mid-30s absolutely loved talking about their horoscopes on a daily basis. I think social media has had a major part in keeping the tradition alive. I'd argue that maybe (hopefully) people take them less seriously but who knows.

I was born in the late 80s and I remember my dad spanking me precisely once for misbehaving (I think I had carved my initials into an antique or something?), we were both so shaken by the experience that it never happened again.

Some Guy TT posted:I was just reading about Korean text in translation coming off as overly stiff, and how this has made written Korean work less accessible to foreign audiences compared to, say, music and dramas, where you can still detect the rhythm and cadence regardless of what the subtitles say. So I tried translating this one more open-endedly than usual to maintain a more engaging voice. Kind of curious as to whether anyone even noticed anything different though. I personally didn't notice a difference but I also don't usually feel like Boss Dharma is overly stiff. I also really like your translations notes on these and am curious to see how this new approach pans out (if you keep doing it).
