One of JAM's sins that rarely gets discussed among all of the other awful things about him is his pacing - he'd take 5-10 strips to say something that could be said in 2 or padded reasonably cleanly to 3 for the slower serialization recaps or overlaps. The result is just huge stretches of identical close-ups and strips that said literally nothing.

This Far Side will always remind me of The Prehistory of the Far Side where Larson mentioned that multiple people wrote in to tell him polar bears and penguins live on the complete opposite sides of the planet, and ever since I read that it's kind of ruined it for me.

Over the years, The Far Side has cultivated a following among some scientists. And, of course, I've found that especially flattering -- but it does have its downside. A certain degree of accuracy is expected from these folks.

After this "polar bear" cartoon was published, I received letters from several biologists reminding me that polar bears are strictly an Arctic species, and penguins strictly Antarctic. drat.
