Tiggum posted:What would people think if they knew she'd been to... a pub? I remember this strip because, as a kid, I assumed that "pool hall" was a euphemism for something much sleazier. I didn't realize that the family is so utterly square that they're amazed/horrified at being in a bar.

Pastry of the Year posted:Arlo and Janis I wish Arlo and Janis was archived as thoroughly as Bloom County or Peanuts. GoComics only stretches back to 1994, and as far as I can tell there are just two collections: one book of '80s strips and a more recent anthology the creator put out.

I know that these are reruns and that there are plenty of current comic strips worth hating, but this smug drivel annoys me more than Funky Winkerbean.

Didn't these Foob reruns initially try to pretend they took place in the modern world by changing things like "Walkman," to "iPod" or something? I guess they gave up on that.

Just Dan Again posted:I'm really glad that Calvin's dad looks abashed at the end here. That's what really sets this apart- Calvin's regret is real and respected, and the strip shows that the dad comes to realize that flipping out isn't actually accomplishing anything. It's also the complete opposite of Calvin's typical reaction to being in trouble. Usually he's just upset at being caught or punished and rarely expresses remorse. Of course, the comic goes right back to that sort of thing, since it's that sort of strip. Johnny Walker posted:
I wasn't aware that anyone considered the first few Friday the 13th movies to be the best or scariest of the series. They're just generic slashers. It was Halloween that, like Nightmare, started off with a creepy, critically well-regarded movie and got sillier from there.

Just to make sure I'm up to speed on Mämmilä: Heimo and Anja have a kid now, but the big guy who likes cats (Sulo?) and his wife lost theirs? Or did they have a child as well?

RoboRodent posted:Never could relate to Calvin in the camping strips. But then, he apparently has a forest to roam around in his back yard, so maybe it's not as exciting. Calvin's mom seems to dislike camping as well a lot of the time, so I always wondered why she agreed to go along with it.

Technowolf posted:Oh, it's this storyline. Reading the first strip now, it seems a little odd that the woman Calvin mistook for his mom didn't notify the zoo staff about a lost kid.

EBB posted:Is that a very tired looking Nova with her hair regrown or a different person? I like Zelda, but it sorta has that Hiroki Endo problem where a lot of the characters have similar faces and you have to rely on their hairstyles or the dialogue to tell who's who. And since Zelda's friends change their hairstyles sometimes...
