Did you know Tove Jansson, illustrator of Moomins, did illustrations for The Hobbit and Alice and Wonderland? I just found out, and I love them:

Old School Peanuts (Jul 12, 1951)

Early Peanuts is so good. I particularly like the classic Simpsons playing-with-media-assumptions energy in this one. Sorry to be all :thejoke: here but it's great how panel 3 makes you assume he mowed the lawn and panel 4 hits you with the switch. Great use of the medium.

Hey I haven't seen Jucika in too many pages of posts now. C'mon, chop chop.

What if the seagull drifts into panel, says either Neato or Success!, and when the bubble appears THEN Nekonaughey's face blinks in? Instead of being there the whole time.

Really enjoying the Modesty Blaise graphic novel. The larger and varied panel size is doing it a lot of favors.

The art leaves me cold. Check out a few pages back, during Modesty's chat with Tarrant and the guy, when they have two silent panels of her thinking in the upper-right corner of the page. Her eyes float around her face. I'm awaiting the return of newspaper-style Modesty, personally.

Smokey Stover is the breakout new hit of the thread. I love its cartoon energy and stupid gags.

You know, I've always said discovering historical comics is the best part of this thread (amazing though content like Nekonaughey is), and I realize part of it is that it lets me say dumb poo poo like "this comic strip from 1935 is a breakout hit and breath of fresh air."

The following is a non-exclusive list of comics that are forty years old or more and also own:

Smokey Stover
Thimble Theater
King Aroo
Footrot Flats
Nancy (terms and conditions apply)
Peanuts (same)
Prince Valiant (not same actually the new stuff rules but it's not quite so gloriously illustrated)
Doc's Dippy Duck
Pogo
Skippy
Keeping Up With The Joneses
Origins of the Sunday Comics
Ella Cinders

Many other comics posted own. If your comic owns and I did not mention it, don't worry, it probably still owns.

I just want this thread community to stay together somewhere and keep posting old comics, and new comics. I'll be watching the discord. I hope Bread roses can become a new SA with all the myriad threads on myriad topics.

If I had to pick only one thread on all SA to preserve it'd be this one. Right now I'm just hoping no plug gets pulled before I'm off work and can read my backlog of comics on a not-tiny-phone-screen...

The finger-wagging scolding that makes every fourth or fifth Zelda strip insufferable is visible here.

"You, Zelda and by extension the reader, are personally responsible for this adorable bear dying because YOU took a plane trip. I, the artist, am on the trail of the real problem where my character notes the incessant waste and pollution of capitalist activity, but by showing the precious bear's life melting away panel by panel as Zelda accepts her friends' argument that a given individual's CO2 contributions are insignificant, I scold YOU."

I don't care how many pages late I am to this - this is one of the best comics I've read and the best dad-trolling outside of Calvin & Hobbes.

I'm three weeks of comic time behind catching up on the good comics. Travels with Farley is not one of the good comics. If no one has called out that "big government so scary, bleeding hearts love criminals these days" heap of poo poo I will happily be the first.

On a positive note though I'm reading Popeye's trial and the judge is a cool dude.
