I also defended my master's thesis (Humanities). The difference between the MA and the PhD is that an MA was read by an internal committee whereas the PhD had an external examiner.

Same (STEM M.Eng). Nobody except my chair showed for the defense, but in theory yeah.

It's extremely weird because this is the last strip before the Pixel-Anne Lee story:

Which seems to imply that the story was the gift. But then you get yesterday's strip saying Michelle got him something else and his mom gave him the book?

It is incredible how bad of a storyteller Billingsley is.

I'm betting it's going to be a framed "selfie"of her, but one of the ones Curtis took of her that she found flattering. There was an arc about that some billion years ago or so. It'd fit form for the character.

So Pastis gets complaints from newspaper readers for bad puns or morbid jokes, but McEldowney gets a dude hard from watching his wife breastfeed in a tight dress and does a restaurant handjob comic spanning multiple days and is just fine.

Funny world, this place.

Was the strip as horny as it is now when he turned off comments on his strips? Because he lept right on that the moment he got a chance, and I suspect that helped drive off anyone who wasn't super into it. How many papers run 9CL now?

Google says only sixty papers run it, which is a relief though still sixty too many. The comic has been an idiotic horn-fest for as long as I can remember.

The fact that he lets his self-insert be the butt of the joke is one of many reasons Bushmiller is better than Gilchrist.

I don't know what possessed me, but given how lovely Gilchrist was about Fritzi as a character, I googled images for "Gilchrist Fritzi" and oh god, he is/was drawing her as a pinup and selling the art. :suicide: Now that I've seen it, you all have to suffer too.

This is an 14" x 17" original drawing of the comics pages prettiest good girl, Fritzi Ritz. The art is inked with permanent ink and drawn on acid free Strathmore board so this work will last for many years without fade or yellowing. The subject is a full figure, good girl, "On the Beach" pose of Fritzi in a swim suit. This is not a print but a hand drawn and inked piece crafted by the present day artist, Guy Gilchrist, of the internationally syndicated comic strip, Nancy. Note: This is marked as SOLD on Worthpoint.

This one sold too.

Gilchrest's art looks like what you'd find in those uncanny religious Archie Comics.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if both he and McEldowney have desk drawers filing cabinets entire wings of their houses dedicated to self-drawn smut of their characters, which they visit quite regularly for some one-handed viewing. Coin flip on whether Brother of Rock somehow is involved in the scenes for Gilchrist.

Going back to the age-old question of which of these artists has the weirdest smut collection of his own characters: Look at the angles of the arms there and the length of the dude's arm. Note the straightened elbow. Now consider the position he needs to be in for that to be anatomically-possible whatsoever. :wtc:

Alternative acceptable answer: She's lying on her side and is holding her own hand, reaching toward the camera. E: Nope, elbow is backward for that.

Each one of these feels like a hook to a story that isn't getting written. Like the only way James can keep the reader interested is by promising that the protagonist is going to go on an adventure. If James is doing this intentionally it'd be an amazing example of being meta. It wouldn't be any less dull.

He’s bringing you to the edge of an adventure. Duh. :downsrim:

The first comic after that week long "tribute to Ernie Bushmiller" is five close up panels of Aunt Fritzi in a bikini, and the Boomer comment underneath is about how socialism is bad.

So, yes, that week sucked poo poo, plus the decade or so either side of it.

Just to reiterate this: On top of taking every opportunity to draw sexualized Fritzi that he could (remember the halloween costume strip where she kept asking which costume totally-not-Archie liked best?), he sold and auctioned pin-up style artwork of Fritzi on the regular, and has a bunch on his DeviantArt. :suicide:

I'm not sure why that skeeves me out while other comic artists such as David Willis drawing porn alongside their regular strips gets a shrug at worst? I think it might be when the strip becomes (blatantly or suggestively) an advertisement for the porn.

I don't know David Willis' work, but does he draw porn of the characters he's putting in his regular strips? Also, are the things he draws porn of supposed to be family-friendly characters?

Think of it a different way: If Jim Davis had his Garfield comic but was also auctioning sketches of Grover and Elmo getting nasty with Big Bird, we'd probably be :stonk: about that too. (Alternatively, the AvasDemon webcomic artist who was using porn of her main characters as Patreon bait, apparently. Somehow, either of those scenarios gets creepy as hell.)

Oh loving god, I just remembered that Gilchrist was involved in Muppet Babies.

EDIT: Also I thought the AvasDemon creator just had, like, a pinup-type series of pieces and not porn and people blew up about it even though she wasn't intending the characters to be underage in them. If it creeps you out I think that's valid, it's definitely skirting the edge of something, but I also think she got a lot of really disproportionate hatred from people who probably just didn't like her comic and wanted a reason to rag on her. I figured on her part it was more being the writer she has the context for the characters and their whole arcs into adulthood so it was easier for her to just slide down the timeline whereas for everyone else it was a major curveball out of nowhere, not that she was trying to be creepy about teens.

EDIT EDIT: To be clear I think she needed to slow her roll on teen pinups, it's just the sort of thing where I don't like the rumor mill around it.

Ah, I actually didn't know that! The poo poo I was read made it sound like they went full porny with it, but that's what I get for believing anything on the internet. :negative:
