Is that really a good thing?

With game of thrones there was this whole series online called "beautiful death" that would do like a painting of major GOT characters dying, and it seemed really weird and creepy to me.

Like some kind of bizarre obsession. Making such a big deal of "beautiful death" seems like you're treating the show like a snuff film. Its just.... weird. Macabre, but in a creepy way.

I mean I like talking about philosophy as much (or more) than the next guy, but particularly obsessing about the visuals involved in death just seems like maybe not a good or healthy idea really. It seems exploitative in a way.

Now, Hannibal was a beautiful show, no doubt, I really liked it. Sorry to pick on you, I just, I've seen people expressing feelings like that and it just seems kinda not good to me.

Death is a part of life and storytelling as a result, but getting too hyped over depictions of death turns television entertainment into like, mock Roman blood-sport or something.

The general landscape of network TV is like 50% misery porn. All the NCIS's and SVUs and forensics shows that dont play with any subtlety or nuance, aren't creative with the kills and just brazenly document a rape and murder of some nameless lady so a quip machine can solve it in the next 40 mins. Hannibal at least skipped the actual murders a lot of the time (which makes the times they DO show it that much more intense), only letting viewers see the end result, with maybe some flashbacks as Will puts the case together. And there isn't really a triumph to Hannibal's kills despite the fact that over the course of the show you sort of start to root for him...until you don't.

The show doesn't glamorize the kills so much as Hannibal himself, who is so other worldly and strange you never really think "wow i could be like him if i just learned to cook."

one day my friend calls me over and hes got this plastic wrapped copy of Con Air and it was only in theaters like 3 or 4 months ago we watched that movie at least 10 times in a month, eventually just fast forwarding to the end bit

Watched two episodes of Avenue 5 this morning.

It's a great idea with an amazing cast but... I dunno, I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong. Terrible direction and editing? Hugh Laurie's and Josh Gad's characters are the only ones the viewer gets any sort of background on via dialogue. If a viewer hasn't read about Avenue 5 in the media before hand they won't ever get clued in on what the deal is with Ethan Phillip's character. It's like they shot everything and gave it to a concussed intern to string together in the editing room.

Episode 3 of Avenue 5 had me actually laughing out loud a few times, the first 2 episodes were like....ok, but not great and I was watching for the Armando Iannucci pedigree

for whatever reason every single joke landed in this one. It's like the first 3 episodes were supposed to be a 1.5 hour premiere or something and I was watching the actual wrapup of the pilot, I really didn't think the first 2 were that great either outside of Zach Woods

I mean, I'm not really a gamer and I only played the original Sonic the Hedgehog and I don't even think I ever made it half way through the game. But are the current crop of Sonic and Detective Pickachu movies really sticking to the video game plotlines and story?

I'm mostly joking around. If they made Mario and Zelda movies would I watch them? Motherfucking hell yeah. I make bad viewing choices all the time. I watched Godzilla: King of Monsters last night because I thought "how boring could a movie with a poo poo ton of monsters fighting be?" I challenge Hollywood to prove me wrong and it loves to do so.

But like I have no real desire for a Mario or Zelda movie. I'm just kind of surprised that in 2020 when drat near every other nostalgia option has been tried that none of the Nintendo ones have since the 90s. Like, they weren't even in Ready Player One (another film I dared to be boring and it won), were they? Nintendo must keep a tight lid on its stuff or something.

they didnt make robotnik fat and the lil animals dont get kidnapped by sonic and used to control his machines. imo the anti-corporate/pro-nature take would have been a very simple link and they just didnt even bother

like just make it so robotnik kidnapped every lil birdy and chipmunk from his world and now he travels from ring to ring trying to find a world Robotnik hasn't ruined yet and he finds Earth and half the animals are already dead and the environment's ruined. except nobody's heard of Robotnik, he hasnt even invaded us yet. and sonic jsut ditches our planet because we're completely screwed and he can go anywhere else

anyways thats my sonic movie pitch thx bye

yeah they were doing something similar way back for Tom Cruise's Oblivion movie to wrap the giant sky condo set in dynamic lighting. It looked gorgeous, but those were pre-rendered scenes. its cool they integrated it with real time CGI rendering tech so you can go beyond color tweaking and start custom placing background geometry while at the same time telling your talent to reposition to show it off a bit more, or adding some fake plants and stones to hide the seam line of the screen to the floor

Yeah.

Although at first I thought the point was so that your actors could see the scene they're in. The problem is if its actually recorded in-camera, it has to be perspective correct, so as the camera moves everything shifts and blurs from the point of view of anybody actually in the scene, which I imagine would be even more bizarre than green screens.

But if you wanted to do it the way I was thinking, you'd have to have a way to easily remove the backgrounds while not having a simple uniform chroma key. Could probably pull it off using motion detection to remove the background but IDK.
it does look weird! Bill Burr was talking on his podcast about how the background moves crazy when the camera moves and everything looks wonky as gently caress in person but completely locked down and perfect in-camera

How it works is the scene has a generic sort of background thats always there, but the "hero" section is always locked to the cameras perspective and travels around the set as the camera moves, so when you're out of the cameras sight line you can see this very obvious box moving around the screens, which you never see in-camera because that box goes just beyond the lens's framing. I wouldnt be surprised to find out the generic section was pre-rendered or WAY LESS fidelity real-time, and the box is where they focus the most processing power. You can see an example of it here at 34:20 when they move the camera, but the shiny bike is still reflecting all the rocks and stones from the non-active section

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyYXLEz0k1Y#t=2060s

And they also use the live background to shoot greenscreen passes while keeping reflections from the LCD background which is fuckin bananas to me:

They also mention that the use of real reflections allows them to use more 'real' props. For example, a lot of things like swords are partially CG since they would reflect the green environment and need to be touched up later. But with accurate reflections, they can use highly reflective real props and have everything captured in camera.

ahh badass i never even thought of the prop reflections. And they ABSOLUTELY took advantage of this with Mando's armor
