Ooof. I was hoping it'd be an exploration of blind faith and the messiah guy would be a fake or something. Or at least have him actually be the devil or something who gets a shitton of evangelicals following him!

Netflix put out the second part of Carole & Tuesday and... oof. It isn't bad but the plot kind of meanders into this whole political thing that never seems like it actually has anything to do with Carole or Tuesday even though it should. It also has very little conflict involving Carole and Tuesday instead putting everything off on Angela, who gets a raw deal. The season also just kind of ends.

Eh, everything seemed to be set up to be solved by that finale. Yeah, it was meandering, but angela and the election seemed like tools to show how C&T affected things. I do kind of wish there was more drama around her being Valerie's daughter though.

There is a show coming to netflix that might intrigue y'all(this is apparently the page it's supposed to be on, though right now it's blank). It's called Dorohedoro, and it's an adaptation of a manga that is one of the more unique series and settings I've encountered, anime or no. It's just so loving WEIRD, and the rules of its world especially so. It's filthy, not a single surface in the entire series is free from dirt, dings, dents, damage, grime, chips, rust, mold, etc. It's horrifically, grotesquely, ludicrously, comically violent. It's very silly and goofy, juxtaposed against the regular occurrence of horrible death, or sometimes alongside those.

It's set in a dilapidated semimodern city, "Hole", where the denizens are regularly abducted and experimented upon by sorcerers. One such unlucky person, Kaiman, had his head replaced by a lizard's, and his memories stolen. To regain them, he bites the heads of sorcerers he catches and a mysterious man who lives in the back of his throat judges whether they were involved or not. If not, then he kills them. He spends most of his time with Nikaido, the owner of the grungy diner Hungry Bug, and part-time sorcerer hunter. She's the lady in the OP of the show, which is weird, makes little to no sense to someone who has not read the series, and yet is utterly perfect when you ask anyone who has. I hope you like gyoza!

Here's a teaser of the first couple minutes of the show subbed, I believe english Netflix will be uploading the whole thing(maybe dubbed?) when the season has fully aired. which seems like a weird way to do it, to me, instead of just airing them as they come out in Japan, but whatever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BrrHlda25E&hd=1

It is a wild, surreal series where basically everyone is a mass murderer clown idiot because that's just the sort of world they live in, almost all the major characters are super fun and entertaining despite them all essentially being serial killers. I watched the raw of the first episode and it looks to be extremely faithful to the original manga, and the amount of detail and effort put in to make sure absolutely everything is as run-down and dirty as possible is kind of staggering. The character CGI models look pretty good most of the time, too, though there are some off moments.

Cap, your on thin ice bringing anime to tvland.

Everyone should watch Carole and Tuesday

DC Murderverse posted:

HBO Max is live. The initial Originals offering is real real slim, especially considering Love Life has been getting mediocre reviews (read: unfavorable comparisons to Le Sexing t3h C1ty with a better lead actress to compensate a little). That is, it's slim unless you are a literal child: New Looney Tunes, new Elmo late-night show, and a weird YouTuber-hosted kids craft reality show; that's fully half of the original content up at launch. The other two are Legendary, a reality show based off of drag balls, I'm gonna wait for people who are more familiar with drag balls to watch and see if it's any good before I drop in, and On The Record a documentary about the women that notorious recording industry scumbag Russell Simmons raped/abused, which was notable because Oprah was at one point involved in the making of it, and it was supposed to premiere on Apple TV+, but it took a very roundabout way to end up on HBO Max.

Of course, no one is actually signing up for this right now because of the slim originals, with the possible exception of huge Looney Tunes fans, everyone who's on there is just gonna watch Friends or the Big Bang Theory again. It's got a few other interesting TV offerings (apparently the entire Bachelor franchise, CNN's pretty good documentary series about decades and the incredibly good Parts Unknown, a pretty comprehensive Cartoon Network collection, pretty much everything that was already available on HBO Now), but honestly I think the secret best offering is their movie selection. It's got the usual HBO selections of new movies and a smattering of older movies, but there's also a TCM-curated selection that has some stone cold classics (think Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, Gone with the Wind, a bunch of Fred/Ginger musicals, and of course the crown jewel of WB's classic movie catalogue, XanaduThe Wizard of Oz), and I think every Ghibli movie as well. Unless you're a really big film nerd (in which case you already possess Criterion Collection, which for my money is the streaming service to get if you care about films), the streaming services available have been lacking in the classic movies department for a while, since all of big studios have realized the value of those things and are bringing them under their own roof now for the most part, so WB going and putting out a bunch of really iconic classic films is a smart move.

I wonder what intelligence agency they're gonna be carrying water for this time

edit: fixed spelling error

Disney doesn't have ghibli anymore??
