The same way you'd write the script if it was a boy and girl but with two boys or two girls. Think of a generic bildungsroman story where instead of the boy giving a gift to his female friend and her appreciating it and hugging him he goes "aw shucks" and turns red but its two boys. Ain't hard.

Not an example to emulate for various reasons but China of all countries has some intensely pandering Boy Love shows that are insanely popular show genre but for censorship reasons they can never have the characters gently caress, kiss, or say anything suggestive.

And now I feel stupid. It's such a simple thing, yet I just can't see that for some reason unless someone points it out to me.

It's obvious from Charlie's characterization that he's got a hetero crush on the little red haired girl, and he doesn't have to talk about how he wants to bang her to get that point across. And no one said "it is inappropriate to have a movie where Charlie Brown is portrayed with these feelings."
And that clip was sweet.

Ponyo, a movie about two five year olds, features a hetrosexual kiss. Basically every children's cartoon with child protagonists features some sort of hetrosexual romance or crush.

I don't think it's strange or unrealistic to want something like that to be allowed to be gay sometimes. Just a totally chaste puppy love, but for two girls or two boys.

Like, it's not seen as weird in a movie or TV show for a boy to say he wants to marry a girl he likes when he grows up, it should be equally not weird for him to say he wants to marry a boy he likes when he grows up. Or like maybe two twelve year old girls could hold hands and watch a sunset together, if a boy and a girl did that it would be seen as a completely wholesome and sweet thing so I feel like girls and girls and boys and boys should be allowed to see themselves presented in that same sweet and wholesome way sometimes.

This isn't an original observation, but the fact that the issue gets brought up fairly regularly by people with good intentions speaks to the way broader culture has sexualized LGBT+ people. The "default" way to perceive gay relationships is through fuckin' (or, for trans people, what they use to do the fuckin').

So I finished my Legend of Korra season 2 rewatch, it was a lot better than I remembered. Now I’m on season 3 and while I know it ends very strong, the early part is not much better than the first half of season 2. Things take a while to get going and Mako feels completely sidelined. Bei Fong finally gets some well needed characterization though in a bit of a clumsy way with magic acupuncture flashbacks. Also the episodes have some trouble juggling the plot lines, meaning instead of cutting back between Tenzin and Korra and Zaheer so they’re each in every episode, sometimes entire episodes go by where we don’t see one group at all, or only for a couple shots.

This is DLC for The Last of Us. The two girls spend a day exploring an abandoned mall. the black girl is going off to join this group called The Fireflys, and they have one last afternoon of being dumb kids. they do poo poo like have a water gun fight, play music, dance on store shelves. They have a fight and the girl going away renounces her plans because she realizes she doesn't want to be away. They share a kiss, zombies rampage, they get bitten. They contemplate killing themselves but instead choose to spend their final hours together.

Aside from the bummer at the end, it's pretty rote. But sweet!

Anyway, Mitchells is totally on the Playlist for tonight.

The New Pokemon Snap is wonderful. Very pretty, very relaxing, and just an all around delight to play. Watching Pokemon run around in nature is just as fun as an adult as it was a s a kid.

The one complaint I'm hearing is that it's pretty expensive (65 dollars) for a fairly short game (15 hours), and that's a valid complaint, but for me personally just the few hours I've played so far have been worth the price of admission.

I may be an outlier but there was way more of a focus on relationships in kids tv than I ever experienced in life. Or like, it is also 20-40 year old adults working out these issues in their tv jobs or mining situations for comedy or reason 47. When kids get in "relationships" at like ten it is usually like, nothing.

Ah but that's not a real relationship, that's an idealized movie of a hard truth. Charlie Brown is great because it's an adults perspective coming through these weird little bald kids, and I think his whole life informing his work and knowing the red haired girl was a failed relationship was great for peanuts as an educational thing for kids.

This feels sweeter and more honest, from the man himself.

Saw it a few hours ago. It was heartfelt, funny and had an enjoyable artstyle. But there's a young boy who has a (heterosexual) crush, so based on the previous page, this movie isn't for you.
Also for what it's worth, with regards to representation: In a throwaway line at the end, the main girl is in a lesbian relationship. Don't worry, it can be easily removed for the Chinese market.

I will say some of the unease around kids with sexuality and gender--as a trans-non-binary educator who spends a lot of my time helping kids with their coming out experiences--is the idea of being set as one thing. Fluidity in gender and sexuality are a bit new for people. I've spoken to a lot of peers who do genuinely want to help kids, but have a concern that when an eleven year old says, "I'm gay" they're signed up for life and what happens if they "change their mind?"

It's not just an issue of implying choice, but also that having the experience of being attracted to boys as a boy, but then finding yourself into girls or ace or poly or bi, is fine. Just like my kid who goes back and forth between "he" and "they" on a daily basis should be able to explore that even if for whatever reason they go by "she" one day.

Also, and not to make assumptions about Hedrigall's own experiences a gay man, but it is important to remember that for a lot folks STILL, being queer and a child is a death sentence. I organize cabal of adults who have to essentially lie and withhold information from parents because we have children who will be kicked out of their house. The decision to be out can be a challenging one and the freedom to explore is sadly one of privilege because coming out can be such a delicate thing that it imposes a sense of decisiveness on people. And that decisiveness feels like a very grown up thing because who would want a child to have take such a risk?

Once again, not necessarily Hedrigall's experience, but there really are well meaning or at least understandable reasons for why people get iffy about kids accepting or exploring queer identities. We need to move past it because I wouldn't wish the sadness I have of never having the experience of being a girl on anyone and at least I was able to explore romance in line with the people I was attracted to.

But also being very online I think just makes people very sensitive for creepy stuff and in the real life people can acknowledge sexuality in children and not be a creep.

I sincerely hope that a movie like you are describing (a puppy love sort of thing with homoromantic characters) happens within our lifetimes, but I am not feeling optimistic.
There's a really good episode of Craig of the Creek with two minor characters who are Goth teenagers starting to age out of high school, realizing they're in love, and awkwardly sorting out the feelings. But the little kids on the show think they're just witches and it's great.

TV is definitely there and children's fiction has been there for a bit, but I think TV and books are more comfortable relying on a more targeted audience than film, but I think we'll get there.

But for real, yeah. Definitely thought it could be going that direction, or that the end was ambiguous enough that it could be interpreted that way.

I feel like it's all but a trope to have a story centered around two female leads who are clearly destined as a couple but then at the end they just both ... have husbands. Can't think of examples though off the top of my head which is annoying.

The pokemon games have gotten insanely short. Pokemon Shield was like a 12 hour game, it felt like the demo for a full game (pretty sure the demo for Dragon Quest 11 was 6-8 hours and the full game was 70 hours.)

I played one of the 3ds Fire Emblems skipping all dialogue and battle animations turned off and it was still more hours than any recent Pokemon game.

Anyway, that rants aside, looking forward to seeing Mitchells vs the Machines this weekend. The style looks so good. Cartoon Brew's review wasn't as glowing as I thought it would be, but they're a fairly critical website.

Definitely got the Lord style freneticism but in a style all its own. I kinda feel like it may be trying a little tooo hard to be "memey" or use hip 2021 language (they force in phrases like "relitigate"), but for the most part it does it way better than most attempts at it. The Wreck-it Ralph movies actually may have hit the vibe a little more smoothly, and some really key moments feel like they go by a little too fast to hit properly for classical dramatics or for kids to absorb what's going on (the speed with which PAL instantaneously takes advantage of Dad's realization that Katie was just telling him what he wanted to hear comes to mind), even if they are properly "realistic" in how fast they'd play out. But it does feel like this is a big step in an evolving art form, somewhere between 2D and 3D, where the lines are all blurred and everyone's still making up the rules.

I do want to know whose idea it was to make CalArts out to be like an East Coast ivy league college lmao

I also liked it a lot. Also, somewhat relevant to others conversations, I liked that (I feel silly spoiling this) they revealed Katie was queer in the end. She has a line that hints at it earlier, and it's pretty clear, but I was afraid that it was just gonna be all hint and metaphor.

The look took me a bit actually. The way they did eyes was interesting, and the shading sometimes reminded me of a Telltale game. But I settled into it pretty quickly, and it's a pretty gorgeous movie.

It was also kind of a nice break for them (Actual spoiler) to just kill the villain after she tried to kill Katie.

I am going to be honest, katie being gay in Mitchell’s vs the Machines feels extremely weird.

Like specifically because the whole plot of the movie is katie's old fashioned dad disrespects her and doesn't understand her, and they fight so much they don't even own a family photo of them not fighting and the relationship is so strained that the implication is that if she leaves for california she may not come back at all ever again.

Then 120 minutes later it's dropped that she's openly gay and has been all along, but I absolutely positively do not think you were supposed to connect that as being anything, like that line was the other shoe dropping or anything. Like it doesn't even feel like it's supposed to be a subtext. Conservative dad just hated her to the point she would leave home at 18 and never return for totally unrelated reasons and not even like a metaphor thing. And that felt sort of weird.
