Post Void. Run forward constantly, shoot constantly maybe my rubber bullets will get someone I can't even see. Are there enemies anywhere I don't know there are guys blinding me now but my gun's already blinding me enough as it is just keep shooting and running and everything's blowing up around me and I have no idea what way to go but as long as I vaguely go """forward""" I seem to get there every time so I'll keep doing that. I think the doors are just literal vaginas and I can't tell if these guys' heads are eyes or mouths there's no time to actually look at what anything is. Good.

I have an SSD with my OS and whatever current "big loading time" game I'm currently playing on it, and a 4TB HDD with media and most of the Steam games from my backlog I feel I'll ever maybe want to play one day on it, because moving them from there to the SSD is a lot quicker than downloading them if I want to play them on a whim. My eventual goal is to have enough HDD space to fit my entire Steam/Epic/itch.io catalogue and all future purchases on it so that in the event that any of those platforms die before I/we all do, I'll at least have access to all the games I've sunk cost into over the years.

There'll probably be a moment when storage size balloons so much that you could actually store all your Steam games on one, maybe two drives. Perhaps that's their backup plan - open up a bunch of locations across many cities and have people just walk up and copy all the games they've purchased licenses for onto their harddrives.

I'm not too afraid of any of the platforms I own games on dying. For my old XBox 360 and PS4 collection it is very possible I might not have working hardware or hardware that can connect to their platform that runs it anymore as all the games will have to be rebought as PS5 versions or some poo poo like that though. But for Steam, PCs will keep running them. And if Steam dies, there will undoubtedly be some competitor (Epic?) totally ready to buy them out and offer people to be able to keep their libraries on their platform instead. The massive userbase that would migrate over would be valuable enough to offset any cost for offering their existing game downloads to them for free.

The combination of ever-fattening install sizes with Steam's perpetual yesteryear sales means that your typical gaming consumer will own more TBs of data than they'll ever be able to afford to store.

Also just game sizes themselves ballooning up to match increased disk sizes, and in theory internet speeds should get faster to make it easier to cram 300GB games onto your drive too. So I've seen mixed reviews about the HZD port, what's the word from actual real people with average computers not trying to play it @ 4K?

"Serious performance spikes and even audio stuttering" on a mid-range system does really sound pretty bad. I don't think I've so far experienced actual audio issues even from very bad ports, so that's worrying.

Based on early performance anlysis the HZD port has some serious issues that can't just be chalked up to system specs, since it's giving even high-end gaming PCs trouble. I already have the game on Steam because I am a Horizon superfan, BUT at this moment in time I'd recommend new players wait for more fixes + some kind of fan patch to see how much it can be improved. This is because Horizon Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games and I'd hate anyone to think less of it because of a shoddy port job! I'm going to see how well it runs on my system at 1440p, 2080 RTX with Ryzen 2700x here.

The guy in the Ars Technica article tried it on a laptop with a 1070 and otherwise comparable specs and couldn't get it over 48 FPS. It's the system that had the audio issues as well. The 970 has like half the power of the 1070, if what I just quickly googled is correct. You will likely have severe issues if that says anything at all.

Laptop GPUs should really have different model numbers, the lower wattage and thermal concerns mean they’re nowhere near the level of their desktop counterparts.

Omi no Kami posted:Meanwhile, is Wurm Unlimited good? Everything I've read seems split between "Astonishingly deep and complex survival thingie" and "opaque, frustrating, infuriating piece of garbage." Is this a Shenmue I situation, where both are correct? Both are correct, yes, but it's more. Wurm Unlimited is a stand-alone release of the Wurm Online MMO. It has ceased development but has a number of extremely long-running servers (many years) with a lot of active mod development. Wurm Online just had a Steam release 3 weeks ago, with new servers and a huge rush of new players. Generally speaking for both versions, they are very simulationist approaches to the "survival" genre they predate. The game does a few things that no other MMO has done, which is to provide a huge world that players terraform and actually settle. If you make a new character in Wurm Online right now, do a bit of the tutorial, and start in the Northern Isles on either the Harmony or Melody server and walk a short distance from the starter town you'll see people busy building roads, highways, villages, towns. And due to the way the game is structured, players are directly incentivised to also have farms, ranches for cattle, roads that make sense… It's really fascinating to watch people's ideas of what their medieval hamlet should look like. You can think of Minecraft as the more casual development of Wurm (because it is). I think everyone should, at some point, have a Wurm character and just try to find their way around. Wooded hilly areas are a nightmare of running in circles and getting profoundly lost and getting eaten by giant spiders. It should be noted that the price for the game being old and made by just a few people are lacking animations and models and UX. It's my podcast game, FWIW. Very grindy, but you also get that old UO thing where some people are specialised in certain things. Like, I wouldn't craft my own weapons, I'd buy or barter for them from a weaponsmith. e: Here's a screenshot to show a bit of what I mean: This used to be a green hill with orange trees everywhere. Most oranges were replaced by fast-growing pine for now, and the hill was terraced to support farms, a mine was opened and iron and copper found, but other metals (especially zinc and tin and lead) have to be traded for.
