Humble Choice is great if you like two things 1. owning games 2. games that might not be wholly successful at what they do but are still interesting. The humble trove is great for the latter. It's where Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy first came from.

I probably would never buy Vampyr even though I have it wishlisted (Don't Nod are interesting devs) but for the price of a Humble Choice, I'm pleased to own it. Plus there's a Korean horror game and K-games are hot at the moment.

Please laugh as I reveal myself to be a failure-savant.

I mean, there’s a million ways to exploit the game and your birth sign is one of them, so it won’t be a terrible experience.

Thing is, you get levels when you use your major/minor skills. So you’re gonna level real goddamn quick because half the game is running, jumping and getting hit while wearing armour.

Those skills affect your stats, so you’re also gonna be incredibly quick and hard to kill but totally poo poo at magic and hitting things.

At least Morrowind doesn't have the same dynamic difficulty scaling as Oblivion (man I hated that, just let me eventually overpower things). There might be some sort of inflection point where the hard to kill becomes outweighed by the inability to kill things fast though.

It does to a degree. There are stronger types of enemies that will not spawn unless you are at least a certain level.

Ah fair. Though I don't think I've played Morrowind since the mid-2000s and the overall dynamic scaling was such a big part of Oblivion, so that might explain why I remember it like that :v:

That’s all part of its selling points. It’s a clunky slow and painful journey through the Russian countryside, delivering goods and collecting vehicles. Mudrunner and Snowrunner do better jobs with the metagame. Definitely doesn’t seem your cup of tea.

Yeah I'll shut up about it but it's a 6 year old game at this point and the systems are definitely way clunkier there than they are now after a few iterations. They give you a drat quest log in Snowrunner so you have things to do while getting unstuck and unstuck along the way and lots of upgrades for your trucks that generally make getting around less of a hassle while giving you tangible goals to work for.

It was only $3 or w/e from a reseller, and I don't refund games, but I wish I could refund this one.

If Mudrunner and Snowrunner are so inherently tedious and frustrating, I won't like those either.

I guess I would like it more if it was clearer what you had to do, wasn't like driving through soup every 6 inches (instead like, you get to a rough patch and then get unstuck), and when you do get sort of stuck you didn't move at like an inch a minute. It reminds me why I hate driving through the snow and would prefer to sleep through Winter to avoid dealing with that poo poo.

On a separate topic:

Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition is pretty interesting!

Except the part where I think an alien blew up a power node, which caused a chain reaction of all of my ship parts blowing up because none of my clones stopped what they were doing to repair the ship and I was doing it on my own, and I couldn't do it fast enough so now suddenly I've lost half the ship.

FWIW, the way it does so is very different and not nearly as aggravating. It largely introduces stronger enemy classes. A wimpy little mudcrab will never become a +60 Epic Mudcrap Of Doom because of this, but you will start encountering randomly spawned things like Nyx Hounds in the wild and such, which can be a nasty surprise.. There's a special levelled list for that. If you go into a cave and encounter something like Ascended Sleepers where you previously only met Ash Zombies, that mechanic is why.

The doom tracker filling up actually doesn’t immediately end the game so it isn’t (initially) terrible to let it build in favor of other things. What happens when it gets full is it starts another timer that counts down in game time - I think it’s 20 days or something. So traveling, scanning, or just looking at the map will lose you time. Any activity that would delay the avatar project will stop the countdown and bring back the doom tracker.

However the catch is that whatever time you let countdown after the doom tracker gets full is gone forever. So if you let the bar fill, lose 10 days of time out of 20, and then stop the timer, the next time the bar fills it will start at 10 days, not 20.

So, my dad has decided that he likes to golf again and this inevitably lead to him askin me if I can find a golf video game for him. The last one he played was Tiger Woods '08, which might be a bit dated at this point.

What is the concensus best/good golf game or series going on at the moment? The requirements are...

- Single player, preferably so you can play against pros either in head to head or a tournament.
- Possibility of local two player (probably not incredibly important)
- Bonus points for running on a clunker, as I have no clue what my dads rig is but doubt it can run anything that doesn't allow you to tune graphics way way down.

Yakuza 3. The story of a guy who has to take care of a bunch of orphanage children and he goes out to play golf. A lot. In Okinawa. Very dad friendly game. It's currently only available on PS4, though.

On PC, there's 2K Games PGA Tour titles. They can run on old computers if they aren't older than 8 years or so.

Horizon Zero Dawn: success at last, but only after some more stupid stuff.

- to skip the super long opening cutscene so you can actually reach the main menu, press alt-f4 and then say "no" when it asks if you want to quit. there is no other way to skip this.
- I set the settings to the lowest, closed chrome, and started a new game....

....and it worked? Smooth cutscenes, smooth gameplay. I'm now deeply invested in Aloy and hunting robo-dinosaurs. I just finished a sidequest, I'm trying to find Blaze for the main quest, and it's a good time. And even at the lowest settings the game looks great. I'm just so relieved, because now I can play the game and - more importantly - not pester the friend who gifted this to me for a refund. It works and I'm happy.

That all said I am really interested in seeing the devs release patches so I can play at better settings. Also closing chrome is mandatory, the game will stutter if it's open.

So with HZD currently making GBS threads the bed for me, I also decided to pick up Hellpoint while I wait to see if HZD gets fixed or if it's refund time.

So far I've beaten the first boss and decided to explore the Arcology over the Port from the Observatory, but there's two questions that popped up:

1) When I went outside for the E.V.A. suit I noticed my max hp started dropping. I assume that was radiation? Any way to fix it besides dying or what seems to be a healing station in the Observatory?

2) Is the load stat return as dire as it seems? Just picked up the Warrior suit from the Observatory but it takes me to 61% load. Wondering if the load stat returns are any good for what you get to wear, or if I should plan on going almost-naked except for weapons.

I'm not too far in myself, so take these with a grain of salt:

1) If your talking about the Arcology Underside, then it's radiation and a lack of oxygen (there are other locations that lack oxygen but don't have a radiation problem). Healing won't be enough, you'll need an item (and you'll know it when you get it). It's an EVA Suit.

2) The full mobility threshold seems to be 50% load and there's a linear drop-off to 50% mobility at 100% load. That means that using the
warrior set (weight 23) without putting anything into the default load of 40 is going to be a big hit to mobility. I've put 10 levels into load and that gets me to 90% mobility with the set + 10 weight on my weapon/offhand. There's a load-reducing module you can find, but it's apparently bugged right now.

Yeah, putting the opening cutscene before the menu was a weird choice, especially with how terribly the cutscenes run with high-refresh monitors + vsync.

Once I got into the game it’s been playing pretty smoothly. It’s been crashing every 20-30 minutes, though, and that’s a huge pain in the rear end in an open-world game with manual save points. I haven’t tried the memory cleaner yet - maybe that will help.

It's a decision that worked well on the PS4 when it's guaranteed to run fine, but less so on a PC.
