afaik the practical use of nft is solely as an unregulated form of money laundering, much like bitcoin

Nvidia made some attempts to stamp out bitcoin mining with their 3060 cards by limiting the hash rate - and the very first release drivers shipped with it in February.

Except then they did this: https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/320876-nvidia-accidentally-releases-rtx-3060-driver-with-no-mining-limiter

Whoops.

I'm wondering why Nvidia would even devote resources to stopping mining on their cards? I'd think that they would be happy that their product is insanely in demand. Obviously it's good that they want to stop it, but why?

They are attempting to gouge miners by rebadging last-generation Turing chips as ~crypto accelerators~ and selling them at a premium

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/cmp/

For that play to work they need to make the current generation Ampere cards less appealing for miners

It will cause long-term damage to the entire market if the only people able to buy your high-end hardware for years on end are bitcoiners and people able and willing to drop $3,000+ on systems that went for half or a third of that before.

I'm fine with Nvidia gouging bitcoiners. They deserve to be seperated from as much money as possible.

They have a dedicated line of mining cards (and the usual manufacturing partners are involved that make the traditional gaming line cards), there was speculation they'd be trying to push those more.

But of course they short answer is that yes, they don't really care because they and their partners sell through all stock almost immediately.

Speaking of which, people are smuggling GPUs now: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/gpu-smugglers-300-nvidia-cmp-30hx-gpus

quote:

The story seems like it came out of a movie. The Chinese authorities detected a suspicious fishing boat anchored just outside the Hong Kong International Airport. The sea smugglers were loading boxes from the fishing boat to a speedboat at 2 am. When their cover was blown, the shady men hopped on the speedboat and sped away towards mainland waters. A high-speed boat chase ensued (insert Bourne chase music), but the astute gang got away. However, the officers managed to detain the owner of the fishing boat.

The confiscated goods included typical exotic foods, such as sea cucumbers and shark fins, and tech products, like smartphones and computer gadgets. Much to the authorities' surprise, there were up to 300 unidentified graphics cards inside the boxes. According to the report, the lot of tech products is valued at HK$2 million (~$257,000).

The new fad are ~NFT~ or non-fungible tokens, which are magical images which include a one-of-a-kind digital signature and a trail that can be traced back to the creator in order to provide authenticity. Remember nyancat? The poptart cat flying through space leaving behind a rainbow? A special, remastered edition of that gif from the original creator sold for 590,000 dollars. Someone owns the only "original" copy of that, now. It's like saying you have an original van Gogh on your wall except it's a gif on your computer and just like a painting anyone could clone it or download it anytime you host it anywhere so it's purely for bragging rights. Oh and it has a massive carbon footprint because making your unique jpg is just like making shitcoins.

Checking out Astroneer again because of this newest update and holy poo poo this game has changed so much since I last played. There's quests and rewards for those quests, I got a Battery as a quest reward like 4 minutes into a new game and those things used to be a pain in the rear end to get (at first). They added a goddamn compass that shows waypoints on it and stuff. I might have to get back into this again.

So, uh, is there a thread or something where I can find goons willing to set up some Paypal to Steam wallet exchanges? My regional store doesn't take Paypal but I think I can be sent digital gift cards through Steam. Main reason is that any purchases I make through credit card are 64% more expensive than the listed price due to Argentina being Argentina.

Have you looked into paying for purchases in convenience stores? Steams offers that in Mexico. The Mercadopago app lets you buy Steam wallet cards directly from the company too.

But paypal also gets hit with the taxes, doesn't it? Not quite sure what the advantage would be here; from everything I've seen most of our prices are still below what other regions get, even considering the loving double tax whammy.

It's also bad for the games industry because that means a lot of people won't be able ot play newer games because they can't get a card that can play newer games.

Used to be an option, but after the craziness that went down here in late 2019, that got axed (you used to be able to pay through Rapipago/Pagofacil).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure anything that gets charged from outside the country onto your credit card gets hit with both taxes even if the charge is in pesos (a la Netflix).

Well for one it’s destroying the planet. The energy used to mine bitcoins surpasses the annual energy usage of entire countries. Annually, it now uses more than Argentina as of a few months ago.

Bitcoin is also responsible for somewhere around 40 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually. That’s more than Denmark, New Zealand, and plenty of other countries.

In short, it’s dumb as hell.

It's very cool that photogrammetry now allows people to just plug physical objects into games.

What isn't so cool is that Epic bought the scanning software that the devs used to make that game.

They bought the company that makes the software, who still operates independently but were able to reduce the licensing costs of their software considerably. Seems like an okay outcome.

They're talking about Argentina's currency regulations which require a tax for money that leaves the country or is converted to USD or something like that. It's not a sales tax.

I mean, it still looks like Skyrim and the combat is the same, but it's a much more interesting world. There's no level scaling, for one, and leveling up is done through a combination of traditional XP for kills/quests and gold so you don't have to forge 1,000 iron daggers. I'd say it's worth a look at least.
