This came out in December 2020 but it has like 7 reviews so I don't think anyone's heard of it:

Stars Die is a nonlinear real time scifi mystery game with branching dialogues.

A giant cathedral of flesh has appeared in the middle of the ocean on a dying world. A small group of scientists are secretly investigating it when a mysterious woman appears, facing an impossible task.

Completely nonlinear story. Have long debates with people or ignore them the entire game.
Five parallel, but interconnected story lines, each with its own completely separate ending.
The player isn't at the center of the narrative. Each character has their own agenda and they will try to act accordingly in real time, with or without you.
You can explore the environments freely at your own pace, but remember, time is running out.
Your choices won't be about moral dilemmas, but ideological ones. It's all about your limited personal perspective on the events and what you believe in.
Dark industrial soundtrack by composer Connor ORT Linning.

I might play this this weekend, sounds cool!

Oh sweet I forgot that since my TV can install android apps I can put steam link on it... It actually works pretty solidly with a DS4. It's not responsive enough for a platformer but this expands the range of games I could play...

Now the only annoying thing is that my Windows mouse cursor gets stuck on the screen, I guess I have to make sure to physically move it before leaving my PC.

Does Steam Link to phones/tablets allow touchscreen controls in games with touchscreen support? If so, those might be the best tablet/phone games to stream.

The touchscreen virtual mouse functionality has worked pretty well on the couple games I've tried but I'll have to check if this is supported, that would be neat

A single-player version of that style of game seems a little odd. I think it's the latter (I have gotten this game confused with Raging Loop which is the former)

Bots are a myth. Steam has a bunch of prompts, including a message and install prompt when trying to redeem a game you already own, irregular response times and a limit that locks you out of redeem attempts if you try to brute force a code. It is not bot friendly at all and the idea that everyone has to play Da Vinci code because there are mysterious entities running bots, even during one of the rare times someone posts codes in here, and steal all the codes at the drop of a hat is a really tall tale to feed yourself.

The truth is there are dozens, if not hundreds, of anonymous eyes in this thread at any given time. The gifting thread is watched even more closely by people that do want to get codes and are ready to make a quick copy paste. Taking a code without saying anything is the easiest thing in the world here and in any other forum, chatroom and anywhere else someone might gift something. Don't bother people trying to give away things just so that you get a "better", imaginary chance at them. Especially not with hilariously laborious obfuscation ideas instead of something reasonable like just writing the codes in a jpg.

Thanks for posting this, that "if i were designing a keybot to attack this forum i would make it bruteforce basic obfuscation puzzles" was some demoralizing weirdo poo poo

The morality system is really half-baked, it's KOTOR1 level stuff of you find a prisoner and can either help them or not for light side/dark side points, the same event pasted all over the map 25 times.

Also you start off being introduced to the full darkside "genocide everyone" and full lightside "help everyone" faction, I don't think I'm going to push in far enough to see it but I have no idea what coherent justification there will be for the separate "medium dark" "low dark" "low light" "medium light" factions lol

If this cultural element is such a significant part of your game's story and experience that messing it up would be bad, then of course you need to budget for the time and money to do that right, the same way you budget for anything that's important. This isn't a "nice-to-have," and if it's something that can fall off the priority list, you need to consider why you think you need it in the first place, Thinking you have the license to play around with real-world cultures and identities and experiences, and then plead poverty when you tell these stories wrong (when you are literally trying make money off those cultures and identities and experiences) is the height of arrogance.

Yes, it's worth calling out when a European developer tries to make a game using a bastardized version of history with stereotyped Native Americans when they could have, you know, done the work on that. https://www.vice.com/en/article/m7eq5y/this-land-is-my-land-wants-to-sell-an-indigenous-revenge-fantasy-but-without-any-indigenous-input

The developer of Donut County initially started with a Hopi-inspired aesthetic, did the work to try to learn more enough about it to not use elements disrespectfully, and when he realized how much work it would take to do the culture justice, he didn't just go "oh well I did my best," he decided it was worth scuttling and going in a different direction entirely. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/hopi-less-how-kachina-became-donut-county

There was a discussion about Slipways in the Fresh Releases thread that got too big (apologies, I really thought that was here) and I am now reminded that Mini Metro is basically the template that Slipways is following, except adding unsatisfying layers of RNG on top of it

CharlieFoxtrot
Mar 27, 2007

organize digital employees

I suppose, but it sure doesn't feel that way to me.

With Mini Metro, the way that the game expects things to reach a breaking point and that's the inevitable end goal makes me feel fine about the challenges it throws your way.

The fact that Slipways continuously grades you with stars as if the mission will always provide you the circumstances to achieve (when that is clearly not the case) is terrible-feeling.

Like I'm doing the campaign mission where you have to stabilize planets with chip-based installations. This absolutely necessitates you have a Forgeworld and a Mineral world in proximity to each other, and mining minerals necessitates that you have a planet that can produce people. I keep on restarting because I keep on rolling systems where, even if the Forgeworld/Mineral world pair is present, the people planet isn't or the people planet is nowhere near planets that provide its resources.

And it just completely grinds my gears that a trade-based theming is contrasted with game mechanics where other planets actively get in the way of trade routes because they can't pass resources along. And the game keeps loving teasing you with "near-misses" where routes won't work because of a centimeter gap or the planet is two degrees to the left. And yeah there are techs that resolve these problems but I'm not even to the point where I can get those techs because I'm dealing with this bullshit in the opening years

Edit: lol i just saw that the patch today was fixing stuff that applied specifically to this mission, maybe I'll just check back in a couple of months and see what the lay of the land is like
