It's my GOTY 2019. If you're familiar with Armored Core, it's about the speed of AC4, but considerably easier, especially if you use the attachment system. The writing is very anime nonsense. Would it be better to play with M+K (so I can aim) or controller (so I can dodge)?

Another game I'm pleasantly surprised at is Metal Gear Survive. Something about the gameplay loop clicks with me and I'm gonna stick with it to see how it goes. The story is just there though so don't bother if you're looking for more Metal Gear. It is insane but not in that special Kojima way. I saw a review Youtube that made me check it out. Thorhighheels, whomst also did the music to current indie gem Umurangi Generation, did the review.

Yeah I enjoyed it way more than I had been expecting to.

The problem with this is thst it confiscates the majority of your resources as you get them and says you can't use them until you go online.

It'll depend on the game, anything that's purely offline single-player has no reason to implement anti-cheat so there shouldn't be any issues there

It's games that have both SP and MP, or blur the line between SP and MP (ala Dark Souls) that might be problematic but many of those games already use EAC or Battleye so adding one more AC provider into the mix doesn't change much

Modern SP games all have an online component because you can't have microtransactions otherwise.

yes yes I know, keep my expectations low, don't expect a Metal Gear game, that's fine, I just want to enjoy survival crafting zombies.

You should also play Days Gone. It's generic zombies, but well-executed.

I do dig the "make it look and sound as repulsive as possible" aesthetic that Cruelty Squad goes with but it makes it drat near impossible to pick apart enemies from civilians at a glance, the cash penalty on death is loving infuriating and I don't want to waste my time playing stonks in a futile attempt to offset it, and the actual assigned objectives are always just "go here and kill the targets which are already marked for you, through the scenery, at all times". Which I guess is supposed to be thematically appropriate, and there's other stuff to do?? but the sheer amount of oddly bland and frustrating poo poo you have to wade through put me off WAY more than any of the deliberately terrible interface and presentation.

It's also very fun to play with loadouts in Cryptark. You can mount four guns, so it's up to you whether you want four specialised tools for different jobs or to just load up with four rapid-fire machineguns and pull all the triggers at once to be flung backwards by sheer recoil.

Yeah, like I said gating works in stuff like Zeldas or Metroidvanias, or puzzle games. It doesn't make much sense in open world games where you can reach any objective from the beginning. I also maintain it made no sense to make you unlock essential stuff to combat in Metal Gear Rising like parrying. I can't fathom why they did it that way.

It forces the player to select the move in a menu and see the command for it (and often a little animation). It's an alternative to a forced tutorial.

Okay finally beat The Ascent with 18 hours logged, all sidequests done. For $30 I would've liked at least 10 more hours but overall the game was enjoyable.

It started out feeling pretty challenging, then once I got a good Electric Damage weapon the game just felt incredibly easy. Spiderbots and the Pocket Mech are OP; with Max Tactical you can refill your Gadget Gauge while in the Mech, and then immediately just summon a fresh one once it despawns virtually turning this game into isometric Titanfall. I really would have liked a skill tree of sorts, instead of just "these Augs scale based on <stat>". I thought the various special weapons were pretty fun and interesting, if usually bad. Maybe I'll respec and max out the Energy skill so I can use some of the more spammable Augments but overall the game didn't do a great job of letting me feel like a technowizard. Like your Cyberdeck being nothing more than "door & chest hacking level" felt pretty meaningless?

I tried the pocket mech and found it worthless because it has a fixed weapon that did much less damage than my regular one.
