RE7 is great. Especially for how authentic the level designers made the "old house filled with junk" feel. I've visited houses like that myself, minus the mold zombies and death traps.

Might not be as useful as it sounds. Filtering out low playtimes will probably bias any reviews you read towards people who liked the game, because people who don't like a game don't usually play it for 10+ hours just to tell you how much they hate it. Filter out anyone with two hours or less and you don't get reviews by anyone who disliked the game enough to return it, which is often really useful to know.

I guess you've never seen those hardcore players with hundreds of hours played who get irrationally angry at a recent patch, nerf, update, or dlc package. Mainly an MMO thing, but they exist for most genres.

Asking this here because the main thread is dead and seems spoilerrific : I've been playing Return of the Obra Dinn for about two hours and I decided to stop because I feel like I must be missing something and ruining the experience for myself as a result. After the tutorial, I've really done nothing but catalog obvious causes of death and pick out the names of two people that were made really obvious by them being called out, plus two guesses based on an age-related assumption. I feel like I must be missing something I should be doing, but I don't know what. Sometimes I see context I could maybe read something into, but I have no idea what internal rules the storytelling operates on, so I don't know if things are pointing to someone being in charge of something or an underling. It doesn't feel like the game is meant to be played this way, so I'm sure I'm either overlooking something or taking the wrong approach, but I'm not sure what.

That's how you play it. The causes of death are usually the easiest part, and the names the hardest. Reading into context is what you do to narrow down the possible identities of the people whose names aren't directly called out. There's even generic labels in the book for you to use when you've narrowed down the general position of someone but aren't sure of their exact title.

I'm looking for recommendations of a game that's hack-and-slash-ish, and that has ridiculous over the top attacks that are bright and colourful and full of lasers or explosions or similar. I just bought Van Helsing, for example, because a Diablo-like would be good (As opposed to a Devil May Cry-like), but it's not over the top enough and the game systems (Level-up stats, skills, etc.) are a bit too involved for me to want to put the time in to get it to "Holy poo poo this is awesome". I've generally played all of the well-known hack-and-slash games, so I'm looking for recommendations of less well known games. I tend to avoid games like Dynasty Warriors because the combat feels very light.

Victor Vran is a Diablo-like game that you may want to check out. Very similar in theme to Van Helsing, but with simpler RPG elements and an action game style control scheme rather than the follow-the-mouse style that most Diablo-likes have. It's not very deep, but I enjoyed playing through it once.

This is a question that might fit better into the Retro Games thread, and that's where I'm putting it if I can't get an answer here, but does anyone remember a really old DOS game that starts out a lot like that Horizon game, but instead of being a pirate, you start out as a single ship that explored the shores of a newly discovered continent and then set up a colony. It was very nineties and distinctly 2D, so if you remember anything else, it's not what I'm talking about.

I played this when I was six or seven years old, before I really understood a word of English and when Shareware CDs were still a thing, and now that I've remembered its existence, I would dearly like to pick it back up at some point.

I looked into the devs catalog out of curiosity and their previous game, Deiland, is in my library and I have absolutely no recollection of purchasing so might as well take a look later.

Deiland was charming, but the gameplay was a bit undercooked. The game limits you to having only 3 crops at once with a long grow timer. Because of that, and also needing to wait for the correct spaceship to randomly land, there were quite a few times where I didn't really have anything I could do to progress and just had to wait. If they've learned their lessons from the previous game, this new one could turn out pretty good.

Wasn't the original post about games that were as much (or more) hyped as CyberPunk, but not necessarily with a terrible launch.

It's hard to compare, but IMO there's plenty of those (GTAs, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim, MGSV (this got some blowback), many console exclusives, although they tend to have a bit more limited audience)

Yeah. Although they often go hand in hand, the discussion was about hype, not failure. I guess a new generation of gamers has at least learned a valuable lesson about not believing marketing bullshit.

Didn't expect there to be so many negative opinions about a genre defining classic, but video games nerds gonna nerd I suppose. There's lots of stuff that'll need to be touched up, rebalanced, etc, but the core of the game is still great.

Edit: The biggest changes I'd make: multiplayer loot needs to be instanced, the stamina system is pointless, and the monster immunity system on hell difficulty sucks for too many builds.

So is "Sad Dad" a thing now? Can I get some examples? Is it just the usual protagonist motivation of saving/avenging a loved one?

Genshin Impact was fun while I was running around and exploring and doing quests. Then I hit a wall on available quests and had to grind out explorer ranks to continue the story and then I noticed the stamina system and the equipment upgrade system and the slot machine for getting new characters. It's a predatory mobile game that uses a botw style open world as a trojan horse.

Death Stranding has a very weird and nonsensical story, plus divisive deliveryman centered gameplay. Even if you hate both, I think Kojima deserves a lot of credit for making it exist. Especially exist as a big budget game with famous actors, when you'd expect something with its premise to struggle to get funding even as a pixel art garage project.

The video game industry needs more high budget weirdness to both exist and succeed, and I hope this game's success helps pave the way for future offbeat projects.

Speaking as someone who is still playing, Destiny 2 remains a lot of fun, but it's clear that the decisions to go free to play and cycle out content were not in their original plans, and the whole implementation of those things felt very sloppy.

The worst metaprogression is when one of the upgrade options is a bonus to whatever currency you use to buy upgrades. So boring efficiency demands that you max that one out first, and it just feels bad.

XP gain perks/skills are really funny in games with level caps to the point where the perk is totally worthless.

the classic one is the Fallout 1/2 (and i think Fallout 3) one where a perk was straight up like, "gain 1 level". literally just throwing a perk away.

Battle Brothers is the one game I've seen that does it right. If you pick the xp bonus perk, the character gets an extra perk once they reach the level cap.

Children of Morta is a roguelite where metaprogression is far more important than what you find in a run. It is fun, but it is easy to hit a brick wall with a boss until you grind out more upgrades. The story is charming and the pixel art is great.

Edit: Also, ranged characters are way better than the melee ones. Survival is much easier when you're not forced to trade blows.

It's a minor bit of resource management that ends up being the opposite of what whiny gamers think it is. Almost every enemy drops a weapon, and the more powerful the enemy, the more powerful the weapon is. So you end up making a profit on weapon strength and the hard part is deciding what to discard.

I'm not sure what the patch history of Hardspace Shipbreaker is, but having come back to it today after about a year, I'm impressed. The storyline, new ships and variations, the hab sections, collectibles, and the personal ship stuff are all new to me. Finally being able to save progress on a large ship is also welcome. So far it seems like the physics jank and performance issues are gone, although I've not yet worked my way up to the largest classes of ships.

Control reminds me of Shadow Warrior 2 of all things, with a loot system that feels very tacked on and dull. I still loved it for the story and atmosphere. The graphics and destruction were great, and some of the powers were a lot of fun. It's not perfect, but I recommend it if you like the things it does well.
