Hey thread. Is there a way to make a game never ever update? There only seems to be options for updating when the game starts or making the updates high priority.

They are, I played through the CoH 1 campaigns late last year. There were two missions that I had to redo because of those issues requiring you to do a specific setup but I finished them all.

E: Granted unlike MP RTS matches I tend to slow roll the gently caress out of SP campaign missions just because it's relaxing to build up a giant force and in CoH in particular you can slowly take over the map and fill it with defenses and garbage in almost every mission so if you were trying to rush down the campaign there are definitely some missions where you'd just get mulched.

Ahh damnit. I didn't ask for CoH, but I was planning on running through it later. Thanks anyways guys, running steam in offline mode when I launch the game will work for now.

I followed Steam Labs's recommendation to play Dark Souls Remastered and boy I was not expecting to get sucked in like this. I always knew it was a Good Game, I just never got around to playing it. I just beat the two rear end in a top hat gargoyles on the roof and I have no idea what's gonna happen next besides dying a lot. I'm hesitant to ask for tips because playing this game totally blind has been awesome so far. But can someone explain what reverse hollowing and kindling does? Should I be doing that a lot? I also don't understand what covenants do but I have the way of the white one right now.

I didn't realize there was PvP so when I get a notification that I'm being invaded I'm like uhhh ok what. Then this red dude runs up to me and bows and I'm like oh a friend and I'm fumbling to open the gestures menu and as I begin to wave hello he starts shooting blue balls of magic at me and then instantly backstabs me and bows again as I fade into a ghostly mist. But then after the gargoyles there's this T-posing NPC offering "indictments" against players that invade and kill you? What the hell??

And the messages players leave around are great. I especially liked the one in a small cubby that says, "tight spot."

People here have already explained the multiplayer, otherwise go in blind, and feel free to ask for tips if you get stuck in the Dark Souls 3 thread. The folks there are really cool and have played the previous Souls games to death.

If you're having trouble with mobility, stripping off armor to get the fast roll is a seriously good idea. Learning to time ripostes is a great way to get around some of the more difficult mobs.

This is neat. I had a lot of fun in Gothic 2 a couple years back. It holds up surprisingly well, except that the controls are really goddamn weird. I guess the games were made before there was really a consensus on how mouse/keyboard is supposed to work

Are there any rts' out there that play like Tiberian Sun? Relatively slow-paced combat, giant stompy robots, world-is-hosed apocalyptic setting and so on? It had a pretty unique vibe.

At this point I'd like to point out that a Free standalone mod called Dawn of a Tiberian Age is classic and red alert on the Tiberian sun engine (storywise a transitional gap between RA and TD) has been out for a long while now, with choice of classic or voiced Frank klepacki tracks.

Comes with a Skirmish mode, and naval units for TD units to compensate!

Oh hey, this is cool. There's also OpenRA, which adds a lot of QoL improvements to Tiberian Dawn and Red alert. I wonder how the two stack up.

Not off to a great start!

Hmm, do Origin and Steam need to be installed on the same HDD, maybe?

I've seen several people reporting the same problem with other Origin games purchased on Steam, so you're definitely not alone. I wanted to get ME3 and DA:I but decided to wait, maybe they'll have fixed the issues by the time the next big christmas or summer sale rolls around.

They could very well have learned their lesson. Or it could be that they are banking on expansions. If it's a pvp-centric game, they'll want to avoid splitting the playerbase.

Season pass /whatever pass or a subscription model aren't technically microtransactions, depending on one's definition. So there's that.

i will say the proliferation of lootbox/gachapon mechanics in games over just the past 5-10 years seems weird because they've been a money maker since at least when magic the gathering introduced the concept of "booster packs" in the early 90's. i think it was the double whammy of the rise of digital distribution of videogames and the the advent of the smart phone meaning a broader audience than ever before had a video game machine everywhere they go that really blew the doors off companies slamming random blind box real cash money slot machines into their games to pull in ducats hand over fist

CCG's didn't manage to reach far beyond their target market, so most consumers (and legislators, for that matter) didn't even have a vocabulary for lootbox mechanics and the like. Just as one example, the EU is desperately playing catch-up but the fundamental concepts have to be explained to basically everybody involved in the process. It's also been funny watching people slowly discover that regulatory organizations like the ESRB are maintained by the industry and are actually totally resistant to reforming the exploitative aspects of the industry.

There's so much poo poo out there and enough of it is good that just waiting to buy a game when it's inevitably rereleased as GOTY/Director's Cut/Platinum Bling Edition is a pretty easy choice to make. I find myself bitching about a game I want occasionally, but then I can just look at what's on sale on Steam or GOG and buy something just as good for less.

Problem with checkpoints is devs can’t anticipate where people will get stuck due to difficulty or interruptions.

I don’t have a problem with the Souls games, because they are designed around repetition as a mechanic. I have to admit that I wouldn’t give other games the same leeway though. In fact, I quit Darkest Dungeon precisely because I felt the focus on repetition was a waste of my time. So could just be a matter of taste.

Grim Dawn is a lot more viscerally satisfying. It also adds more a fair bit more depth to character builds with the constellation system. I'd recommend it over Titan Quest for somebody who hasn't tried either.

All that said, Titan Quest has gotten a lot of updates and expansions. It's still a solid ARPG.

Utopia is probably the most substantive improvement because it lets you build cool poo poo like dyson spheres and ring planets as well as implementing some other features that are really useful.

What else you get depends on what you're interested in.

Megacorp: Do you want your civilization to be a galaxy spanning corporation?
Synthetic Dawn: Do you want to take over the galaxy as a robotic hive-mind? This would be my pick, just because some of the AI factions are really interesting.
Apocalypse: Do you want to build a death star?
Federations: Idunno, like space diplomacy or something? I haven't played around with this yet. Diplomacy is already in the base game but nobody likes it.

Leviathans: giant world-ending space creatures as well as some other weird poo poo.
Ancient relics: adds exploration/archaeology content. Cool, but definitely optional.
Distant Stars: Adds a ton of scripted story events and bonuses. If you like what's already in the game, this expands on it.

Depends what you want out of it. It's still good fun in multiplayer, especially if you have some friends to play with.

If you are used to modern rts games there are a few caveats:
-The pathfinding is terrible
-Most of the single-player campaign is focused on puzzle-solving. Lots of micro and nursing units through missions. You won't need to think about build order or resource management much because many missions don't give you a base, or perhaps only halfway through can you build units.

Speaking of Grim Dawn, how long and grindy it is? Compared to D2 and Titan Quest? I like the genre but I'm growing impatient with age and I can't really tolerate 90's levels of grind and player unfriendly mechanics.

If you just want to play through the campaign once, it's pretty pain-free. Similiar to D2. GD is much more generous with dropping runes/relics than Titan Quest or D2, which is really nice. Some of the mechanics and feedback are a little obtuse though, so it's a good idea to read through the OP in the Grim Dawn thread before you start: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3758855

There are optional rogue-like dungeons which I would suggest avoiding if you are grind-averse.

If you want to farm specific gear for crazy end-game builds, there are some nice 3rd party apps that let you add whatever items to your character or you can go online and ask goons for loot. They are pretty friendly.

Porn in a game is really off putting and totally distracts from the gameplay.

So on the face of it, it's because it's creepy and unnecessary. I mean, there’s a million ways to exploit the game and your birth sign is one of them, so it won’t be a terrible experience.

Thing is, you get levels when you use your major/minor skills. So you’re gonna level real goddamn quick because half the game is running, jumping and getting hit while wearing armour.

Those skills affect your stats, so you’re also gonna be incredibly quick and hard to kill but totally poo poo at magic and hitting things.

I can speak to X3 and the answer is it isn't exactly a hauling game. I mean, yes you can do that, but it involves a lot of time spent in autopilot and the only way to really get cash is to automate a fleet of haulers and use a relatively quick ship as a mobile office.

On the other hand, there's a pretty sweet salvage mod which adds a bunch of cool poo poo. Tooling around the galaxy in a corvette with a small fleet of fighters and salvage/support ships is pretty drat cool. Collect abandoned ships from war stricken areas and send them back to home base for repairs or scrap and create your own "salvage" if you see a good opportunity. Automate resupply ships to refuel and rearm the fleet on expeditions. Requires reading a bunch of documentation and tooling around with the UI to get things rolling so its not exactly low effort though.

Edit: doing anything in X3 requires "reading a bunch of documentation and tooling around with the UI to get things rolling" so buyer beware.
