Yes but when thinking about a steam machine I just go “but what’s the point?” But looking at a steam deck I go “the benefits are super obvious”

“Switch but you can put porn on it” is really how it should be marketed. They wouldn’t be able to manufacture em fast enough.

I don't really trust Valve not to abandon this. 'Member Steam Machines? 'Member Steam Link? 'Member Steam Controller? Granted I do not know how well the Index is doing to make a call on that but I think I made my point.

To be fair all of those were basically a big “but why?” while the Steam Deck clearly has a desirable purpose

What’s nice is if it turns out steamos3 sucks for windows compatibility, now you can install windows and Steam BPM auto start and you won’t have the super old super sucky interface!

Big Picture was seemingly going to be the new, main, only UI option and they added all their new controller stuff contained only in it. They quietly backported it to the old UI, probably after looking at usage statistics.

IIRC there was a while there if you wanted to use a PS4 or Steam Controller you had to boot into Big Picture at least temporarily to even load the right drivers. The vestiges of this being there's still some games that are looking for Big Picture controller hooks like people have been mentioning.

I know controller drivers are loaded in the old UI now and I'm vaguely sure you can pick out community controller mappings without loading up Big Picture but maybe you only get the default most popular community map. But if you want to make a new custom mapping that's still just in Big Picture, right?

The controller setup stuff opens up the BPM controller settings within a window. It looks awkward but it’s totally functional and doesn’t steal full control of your desktop like BPM does.

I find Steam's advanced controller support works more reliably if a game is launched from BP mode. Steam pops up a alert as the game launches, bottom right, showing the controller mapping in use - the controller is reliably initialized for that game at that point.

I don't like BP mode at all, but do use it to launch any game for which I'm using a controller - even if I'm not configuring it to do anything special.

That’s weird, I’ve found it to be the complete opposite, and plugging controllers in and getting the little popup in the corner letting me know the controller is connected works right in desktop but is a tossup in in BPM. What a stupid feature. I really wish there was a way to remove the button from the menus entirely, but as it is I just keep accidentally hitting it when switching between large and small mode.

Are you running any other controller mapping software? I stopped using DS4Windows etc and gave my soul over to Steam, so maybe that's it?

Nope just Steam. I just go to Settings - Controllers from desktop and enable my controllers from there. Never touch BPM at all. works perfectly except on a handful of old Japanese games, which I just rightclick on and set to ignore Steam’s controller settings.

To be fair since I avoid BPM like the plague maybe it just had issues a couple times and that’s all I remember from using it, but since controller setup can be done entirely without launching BPM then why bother launching it?

Speaking of controllers, it sucks that Steam will allow you to hook up a switch Joycon, but it doesn’t have a feature to let you use two joycons as two halves of one controller. I would totally use that for times when I’m playing from bed instead of sitting in my desk chair.

You can, I've had a DS4, two Logitech XInput gamepads, and a PowerA Switch Pro Controller connected to the same PC at the same time for multiplayer before.

Even then, as long as Steam recognizes a controller connected you should be able to use Steam Input to force a mapping on the game, right?

Yea. Just enable the controller options in steam and regardless of the game’s built in controller recognition issues most of the time everything will work fine.

Greenman Gaming and Gamers Gate are legit and at times still cheaper than directly buying off steam. Just stick with them so you aren’t funding the Russian mafia and also so you don’t one day down the line get your game revoked

I'm looking for a recommendation for something that I can play on the couch with my wife as "copilot" (no controller, just participating in decisions). The last game we really liked in this vein was Walking Dead Season 1. I guess it would be something story heavy with branching dialogue/narrative with limited gameplay that wouldn't be boring to watch. I played a bit of that android one made by the Indigo Prophecy weirdos and that seemed like it fit the bill, but it's really unstable on my system. Most important would be good writing (like good in other mediums, not just good for a video game) and a compelling story. I think "Life Is Strange" is at least in form what I'm looking for, but I haven't heard many opinions about the story.

Edit: we also tried Wolf Among Us but the fantasy/fable thing didn't really click. But nearly exactly that. I'm not sure that Telltale put out anything else that's well regarded.

I'd like to hear your thoughts so I can tell you why your opinion is Objectively Wrong.

Is there any possibility that gyro controls in a wireless switch pro controller do not work when it is used wired? The obvious google searches aren't helping

When plugged in, the pro controller works exactly the same as not plugged in.

The only exception is if you enable the “communicate through usb” option, in which case the amiibo reader won’t work.

My old steadfast 360 controller is starting to give up on me. What's a good replacement for the PC? The Xbox One controller? I'm hoping for something that'll maintain compatibility with older games still and will have a similar feel. Or are the replacement 360 controllers by third-party manufacturers good too?

It’s pretty safe to assume that anything the 360 pad worked on, the Bone pad will work too.

Hell these days you generally don’t even need to stick with Xbox pads as long as Steam is running
