Star Crawlers is okay. It gets pretty grindy and gameplay effectively ends about 2/3 of the way through when your team hits max level but it's fine for what it is.

I just saw Horizons Gate on the store, made it seven seconds into the trailer when I recognized the font being used and bought it sight unseen because it's a sailing-themed strategy RPG slash Uncharted Waters homage by goddamn Rad Codex, aka maker of two of the best and most unique takes on the SRPG genre I've ever played, the stellar Voidspire Tactics and the xcom-meets-roguelike mashup Alvora Tactics

They don't get a ton of fanfare but they're legitimately excellent games with world interaction mechanics that feel exciting and never forced or overused and a bizarre, surreal setting that's completely unlike anything I'm familiar with. Horizon's Gate will probably be even more slept on because Horizon: Zero Dawn was announced for PC the same day it came out so the name won't stand out to people but I figured this might excite someone else who didn't realize it was a thing like it did for me

One feature I really particularly love in these games is that difficulty is controlled by two things; first is a normal combat difficulty setting that modifies enemy stats, and the second is adjusting how much time the AI puts into calculating its moves. You can tell it to make decisions quickly and rashly or on the other end of the spectrum you can tell it to take extra time calculating the best possible move for the circumstances. It's a reaaaaal interesting way to tailor the difficulty to yourself and the kind of challenges you want to face.

Voidspire and Alvora Tactics are among the two best SRPGs on Steam right now, and Rad Codex deserves way the gently caress more money and success than they get. Thanks for bringing this up!

I've never played Wizardry 8, but the number of hand designed dungeons/encounters is sort of low, with the rest being boring procedurally generated stuff. It's functional, but it's just not that interesting, and you do a LOT of the procedural stuff. The encounters are turn-based, rather than Grimrock's real time, though.

That being said, the classes are pretty interesting, and if the devs ever built on Starcrawlers and remove all the procedural stuff and put in actually designed dungeons, I'd definitely give it a go.

Earlier this month some people were posting about Horizon's Gate, the rather pixelated SRPG. Can anyone give and/or repost their thoughts on it? It seems like it'd be up my alley, but there's not much in the way of reviews.

To give a counter opinion to that other guy, I think the game is great if you can get over the graphics. Exploring is fun, although I wish the game had more dungeons, but I think it does a great job incentivizing exploration since you need to find the trainers to unlock the classes. I do think the ports could spare to be a bit more unique with unique ships and stuff for sale and whatnot, but I assume there are limitations to what rad codex can do.

The ship to ship combat is functional, but the real meat of the game is the land combat, which is still one of the better tactical systems this side of FFT. You get a main class that you exp in and a secondary set of class skills, each of which give you five active skills. But you can also eventually unlock two extra active skills, which give you some absurd customization options to break the system and/or have fun dicking around.

My main healer, for example, has the Tactician's Now! skill, which lets someone else immediately act again, providing a much appreciated tactical option if nobody needs healing. I could just give him the Tactician as a secondary class, which gives him access to skills like Withdraw, which causes 3 party members to take 3 steps back and gives them a defense bonus, which is pretty useful when my mage is about to cast a giant (friendly fire) aoe.

If you like job systems and you like Pirates / Uncharted Waters, this game is pretty much a match made in heaven.

I played on Nemesis and lost interest around the halfway point out of boredom. It wasn't brutally hard but it takes FOREVER to take down captains after you're in the level 30 range because they're immune to everything. You could play for over an hour taking down a fort and if you gently caress up just once and die, you've gained literally nothing and wasted that entire hour (and potentially made the opposition even stronger).

Also your character is maxed out by halfway through the game since most of the upgrade perks are sidegrades and you can only choose one of them to be active at a time.

Shadow of Mordor was a much better game.

I thought I was near the end of Shadow of War since I was on (what I thought was?) the last of the maps (the one that's very fire-themed) and had most of the unlocks, then I looked at a walkthrough and saw that I was only halfway through the plot levels??? That game needed to be chopped to 2/3rds its length or have a more interesting gameplay cycle, because those fortress sieges are teeeedious affairs.

Dragon's Dogma felt like a technical demo for a game that was never actually made. The game just felt so empty in terms of design and life, and the best parts of it can be summed up in like a 30 second video of doing a cool thing, until the realization that you were going to be doing that for hours upon hours with very little variation.

Moreso than Heroes of Might and Magic and the previous Age of Wonders games, but less so than dedicated 4X games like Civ. You do have to worry about expansion and what your cities generally do, but there's not too much thought into it since most buildings don't have an upkeep and there's apparently no downside to making GBS threads out cities except the opportunity cost of production and the general increased vulnerability of having weak points in your burgeoning empire. The Extermination part, as I've mentioned, is robust as hell and pretty satisfying.

Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark is 66% off in the weekly sale for $10. I know there are some here that were keeping an eye out for it to drop in price. One thing to keep in mind is that there's an expansion pack coming out soon (May?) and apparently it's been recommended that the game should be started fresh with it.

While we're talking about FFT inspired games, I'll always be trying to pimp Horizon's Gate and other Rad Codex endeavors since they're rad: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1224290/Horizons_Gate/. I think Chimera Squad is an interesting way to test out a bunch of new mechanics for XCom 3 without devoting a whole bigger budget game to it. I also hope the uniqueness of the agents also means that all of my, e.g., snipers aren't just carbon copies of each other (I don't know if WOTC did anything to fix this with more interesting skill branching/options?)

You have set characters which gradually join your company, and often have control over extra characters in missions, some of whom may later join you.

Characters that are in your company begin with a specific class and after you level them some can switch to other classes, each in turn unlocks new skills as they level up (you keep these skills even if you later switch classes) that you can equip in limited slots, so you can tailor them that way, all skills and classes are unique. There are also masteries, which are essentially talents or perks that range from simple stuff like boosting your health or to-hit chance to more dramatic bonuses like overwatch¹ or a special effect to a given skill. You can have multiple mastery boards for each character, letting you quickly switch between sets of them.

¹while the main characters don't have Overwatch by default, the not-SWAT that often accompany you do. I think they did this to avoid overwatch creeping as a style.
