I didn't think it was that bad. The reveal at the end seemed...Well, ho lee gently caress was a pretty good summary. Up until that point, it was kind of a boring drama murder mystery.

I wouldn't call it a good twist, if that's what you're saying. It's the kind of twist that relies on plot holes and casts every character as either a complete idiot or a cartoonish nutjob.

Oh, definitely not a good twist. I didn't mean to even imply that, my bad. It seemed to be there just for the shock of it. If any sort of seeds had been planted about it earlier, then it would have been better, but it's just so out of left field, it's like the ending of a different script was tacked on.

That's what I thought. I think Tyler Perry has gone off the deep end

If you're a director you put what you love on screen, even if it makes the viewing audience intensely uncomfortable. Tarantino likes feet, Argento likes his daughter, Burton likes Depp, Trank likes poop. (In the case of Trank's previous work, he applied that principle more metaphorically)

I had a similar idea to quibi before I found out about it, except it involved the idea of "prestige" content, i.e. video essays and "serious" short films, and you subscribed to specific creators and not the service itself. Kind of like patreon/Kickstarter for short films. Also involved poaching creators from YouTube.

Now that I think about it, there might have been something like that a few years ago actually and I just completely forgot it existed. I remember them having a big old gently caress YouTube campaign and a lot of YouTube creators making think pieces in why they sucked

The Klowner

The first half (pre-intermission) of hateful eight is too long for what the second half ends up being. Put another way, the second half doesn't deliver on what the first half promises. Like it spends way too much time setting up so many interesting lines of conflict and social/power dynamics, and then Walter Goggins' character allies with Sam Jackson despite the latter's killing of the former's idol, which Tarantino completely glosses over in narration with "yeah they had an argument about it," and Channing Tatum shows up Shyamalan-ishly and with zero buildup.

He had a great premise and he completely bungled the landing. I wonder if the fact that the script got leaked really early had anything to do with how badly the plot tracks in the latter half.

I can see why Whedon would not be a fan of Snyder's work, given that the former despises grimdark and can't help cheapening anything serious in his screenplays with a joke, but there's no evidence to suggest they didn't get along or even interacted with each other at all during the production of justice league

People didn’t care so much about that angle in CMBYN for more particular reasons (because people are starved for LGBT representation, and honestly because teenage boys of all orientations are less likely to be viewed as “victims” in these kinds of scenarios), but it’s surprising how normative that poo poo is in older movies.

Not just the time-honored tradition of 40+ leading men being paired with 20-year-old ingenues, but scoundrel “ladies man” characters going after teen girls and that being celebrated as fun-loving or vivacious.

...why does Leto keep getting opportunities like that, anyways?

like, I genuinely don't think he's a bad actor, he's been fine-to-great in everything I've seen him in except Blade Runner 2049 (and there, he was clearly just a really loving bad fit for the part, and it made huge amounts of sense when I found out that Niander Wallace was written for Bowie instead).

but also, like, everyone on planet earth hates him. it doesn't matter how good of an actor someone is, if their very presence in a movie will inherently make it get worse reactions and make less money. i genuinely do not understand why he's still getting considered for these parts unless he has, like, some film execs' Epstein tapes or something.

It's be really great if he just stopped appearing in movies, I think I've had enough Jared Leto for a lifetime

that said I thought he was really good in br2049. The fact that the part was written for Bowie makes me really sad though, that would have been amazing
