Iron Crowned posted:I feel like future people will have superstitions surrounding creepypasta than anything else, with people being terrified of sewer clowns. I watched the Lifetime movie version of the Slenderman stabbings and they basically turned it into this (except with their fake version of Slenderman.) The kids spent all their time watching videos of creepypasta stories to the point where it absorbed their lives and they built up a fake mythology around it.

Thundercracker posted:Speaking of who greenlit a movie I would love to hear how The Foreigner was greenlit. Because it definitely feels like two entirely different movies. Or rather it was like they pitched a script for a IRA thriller and then it's someone said no one's going to watch that so they add Jackie Chan. Like he has no real character arc, and his actions are weirdly inconsequential in a Indiana Jones kind of way. There's there's entire long stretch of the movie where it's not about him at all, and all about Pierce brosnan's IRA politicking. It's based on a book called The Chinaman yet the book is only from the 90s, which explains why it is weird but not why it has a racist title (the movie rules, though) Casimir Radon posted:I liked The Foreigner. If you want a really lovely Chan movie from recently there's Bleeding Steel which I thoroughly gave up on halfway through. Bleeding Steel is one of the most insane recent Chinese movies, by the end they are fighting on Star Destroyers and regenerating limbs. It's also weirdly predicts the basic plot of Star Trek: Picard Alan Smithee posted:Welp. News to me That was either during or just after filming for Ong Bak 3 and around the time of one of the unrests in Thailand but I can't remember if any of that is directly responsible.

Not sure on Bolt but Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little were both heavily being altered through production, Robinsons somehow made it through all that without being terrible because there was some heart underneath. Chicken Little had a cute alien. In movie news there's going to be a Gaston prequel series on Disney+ outside of that the big news is just all the films getting pushed over coronavirus fears, I saw Peter Rabbit 2 got pushed today, I know this thread is just full of Peter Rabbit fans so I don't want everyone to be too sad, time will pass quickly due to the news deluge and you'll get to see your talking bunnies soon

That entire series was such a weird premise, it was like OSC deciding he was now going to become Tom Clancy. After 9-11 is when he wrote the red vs blue civil war book(s?) that were incredibly dumb and there are really old threads trashing it (them? can't remember if it was a series or a one-of) We had all the Zoobooks growing up but almost all of them were the old cover style not the new one.

I stopped reading Turtledove after the Worldwar and TL-191 series ended, his next few didn't seem interesting and then I stopped paying attention and moved on to different scifi genres only to occasionally read the plot synopsis of his newer novels while browsing the bookstore. None have seemed intriguing enough to try out.

feedmyleg posted:Adapting this stuff is such an exercise in futility. Either you do a faithful adaptation and the 700 fans praise the film but nobody else sees it because you've made something very niche, or you do an unfaithful adaptation and the 700 fans are mad and the blogs write scathing articles and the masses are either unaware of the IP's legacy or are actively turned off by it. Either way, nobody sees it. There are rare exceptions like the Banderas Zorro movies, but almost every other pulp adaptation has been a huge failure, either creatively, commercially, or both. The weird period films I'll watch no matter how dumb they are because I just like that they tried something like that. It almost always means they lose a bajillion dollars even if the movie is a hit. Some of them are even good films, but many aren't because the same forces that cause a director to force weird period pieces often mean they don't listen to other constructive criticism and things just fall apart. GrandpaPants posted:They should just make like a failure adventures with all the IPs that people apparently can't make successful. Green Hornet, King Arthur, and Robin Hood team up to, I dunno, adapt to a modern world? Green Hornet and Lone Ranger are even related but the rights are held by two different companies so they can't even do that. At least with comic books we can do more crazy team ups. Megacorps doing Vs. films should be a thing, though. Two of your examples are public domain, and the only American company I can think that does films like that is Asylum lol. Disney at least does their fairy tale stuff in tv and video games, but the film division needs to look at the bank the Descendants movies made despite being direct to tv and start going ham on Disney+ with all those Fox properties that will never see the inside of a theater again.

porfiria posted:Is/was it common practice to j off in adult theatres? Like, is it considered gauche among the clientele? Isn't the whole point of dirty movies to get your rocks off? Or was the idea you'd save it up in your memory and take it home? It happened enough they had special cop task forces that just went into theaters to arrest people for it. That was part of a general harassment of those places, but there was a lot of mob connections with the porn industry (and actual violence when some of the groups clashed over territory). More people used the individual booths (both loops and ones with live dancers) for self pleasure, to the point where people make jokes about whoever gets hired to clean them up. Some of this is covered in the book The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry
