[reposting here cuz gbs closed it lmao]

Japanese children's cartoon from 1988 to present. It's insanely ridiculously popular, like way the gently caress too popular. It's also really cute and silly and bizarre though, so I'm both shocked and appalled that we've never gotten an English version at some point. I don't exactly feel I'm the most qualified for this task, but if nobody else is gonna step up to the plate, I guess I have to.

So, Anpanman is still ongoing in Japan and has a grotesque amount of episodes, so I'd literally never hope to do anywhere near all of them, but someone has to start! I originally wasn't going to commit to it this early, but starting on New Year's Day is too romantic of an idea to pass up. Besides, I've already determined I can comfortably translate a week's worth of episodes in like 8 hours of work, so I'm sure this'll only be a change in my life on the scale of my NEET thread, and nothing more severe than that.

(note: all episodes and subtitles are entirely PG. this thread does not have to be.)

Episode 1: The Birth of Anpanman

With subtitles (hardcoded)

Raw video + subtitle file

Note: To ensure dropbox isn't squishing the video on your computer like it does on mine, please compare the first couple seconds to this image, which is how it should look. If his head looks a bit thinner than it should, please download the video or stream it on a different device (it looks perfect on my phone!). Thanks :)

edit: the subs have a weird encoding issue in one part when i put them at the top of the screen. i plan to fix it soon.

SPOILER POLICY
(Note: it's weirdly strict)

Despite the fact that Anpanman has been a cultural staple for decades, I don't want any discussion of stuff I haven't yet posted. That's because I want this thread to be a blind watching experience. Like, yes this is definitely also for fans of Japanese culture who've been curious about the show for years (like me), but my main intention with this is for anyone to be able to enjoy without knowing the context whatsoever. I want to transport this thread back in time to 1988 when children were experiencing the show and its lessons for the first time on their TVs.
(I know there was a picture-book series before that, but most children were introduced with the show.)

For that reason, I very much DO NOT want you to say things like "oh this character barely shows up again after this" or "i don't think that power is ever brought up again" etc. Of course you're allowed to get excited about series staples like Shokupanman, but only if they appear in this image. Anyone else is top secret.

Every episode has plenty of insane crap, so there should be no need to bring up future stuff. So please pretend you're watching the show for the first time.

IMPORTANT NOTE
(on translation)

If you think I made a mistake, I probably did! Don't hesitate at all to contact me and I'll address it promptly. I by no means consider myself worthy of producing a "definitive" translation of Anpanman, and I most likely heard stuff wrong at times, or misinterpreted a line or two. I also could not for the life of me find Japanese subtitles for this show!!! That said, viewers can rest assured that any errors will be of the minor sort, since the actual plot of episodes can pretty much be understood without any Japanese understanding at all, you don't have to worry about big errors changing the meaning lol. Still, I'm extremely open to corrections, so please fire away!

On a related note, the dialogue in this show can get really weird sometimes, but I'm not embellishing at all. Anpanman really is just.... super happy to let people eat his face. And he's not afraid to express that sentiment... all the time :v:

Also, if anyone wants to offer to help me time the subtitles better, I'm all ears.

Oh and here's some very interesting background on Anpanman's original author, lifted wholesale from bogleech.com's excellent articles on the show (which are still off-limits to discuss in this thread!)

quote:

Yanase Takashi's father passed away when he was only a small child himself, and he and his brother were given up for adoption by a mother who soon remarried and never, ever spoke to her sons again.

While he loved his foster parents, he would never fully recover from the hurt of his abandonment, having thoughts of suicide well before his teens. It didn't help that his own premature birth left him physically weakened, and he was seen by others as dumb, awkward, weird and depressing. He even recalled grown-rear end adults describing him, in earshot, as a "kind" but "not good looking" and not "pleasant" child. Not like his brighter, stronger, more popular younger brother, at least, whom he loved dearly but felt overshadowed by in almost every regard. Years later, when that brother perished in the war as a kamikaze pilot, he still thought it was a "waste" that he wasn't the one dead.

Yanase shared all this and more in his first autobiography, and discussed repeatedly how much of his life and his perspective he put into his characters. Reflecting how other people had perceived him, he deliberately designed Anpanman to be a kind and gentle hero, but neither "handsome" nor "cool," and just like Anpanman, one of Yanase's strongest desires throughout his life had only ever been to be "useful" enough to be wanted.

[...]

With literally thousands of cartoons, books, toys, songs, plays and even some entire parks devoted to Anpanman, I'd say Yanase got that wish and far more, though it's worth mentioning that none of his creations became such a megahit until he was in his 70's. Since then, literally millions of children have been delighted and educated by his characters, Anpanman's face adorns schoolhouses and children's hospitals, an entire museum opened to showcase his artwork and The Anpanman theme song was played to comfort the survivors of the 2011 earthquake.

[...]

In 2013, Yanase Takashi succumbed to heart failure at the age of 94 - and millions of people mourned for that awkward, weird, unwanted little kid.

Here's my schedule for the month, which I'll be following VERY strictly.
I'll update the percentages occasionally, so you can be assured of timely releases.
Besides special full-length episodes like the first one, episodes are generally like 11 minutes, and aired together like I've grouped them here.
I also shortened the episode names for clarity, which thus far are always preceded by "Anpanman and". That won't always be true in the future, but the vast majority of episodes are like that, at least until we start having episodes focused on the same character from a previous episode or something.

SCHEDULE:

January 1: The Birth of Anpanman [100%]

January 3: Baikinman [100%]
January 6: Currybread Man [100%]

January 10: Toothpaste Man [50%] [I got delayed because of unforeseen circumstances, but I should be back on schedule by February]
January 13: Whitebread Man

January 17: Doodle Kid
January 20: Riceball Man

[possible hiatus depending on when the next dvd ships. next dates are assuming a 1 week hiatus]

January 31: Fireball Kid
February 3: The Ramen Angel

I change my mind, I want to do friday/mondays instead of tuesday/thursdays. So here's episode 2a right now! lol
(I've updated my schedule to reflect the change.)

Episode 2a: Anpanman and Baikinman

With subtitles (hardcoded)

Raw video + subtitle file

Alternate episode name: Baikinman Gives Everyone Depression (and the kiddies get a lesson about mold, I guess)

Are you working in chronological order, or bouncing about? I'd be interested to catch a modern ep and compare.

Is baikinman a pun? Baking-man?

Baikin can mean bacteria or mold in Japanese. Makes sense as the villain to a guy who's head is made out of bread.

I'm posting in the order they originally aired.

As Julias said baikin essentially means germs, but changing his name to Germman would be weird lol. And he has actual little mold henchmen as you can see in episode 2, so he can't be named mold either. So Baikinman gets to keep his name.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

Well, this is adorable and my kids have liked it so far. Thanks for sharing! My daughter is already inspired to make her own Anpanman OCs.

Episode 2b: Anpanman and Currybread Man

With subtitles (hardcoded)

Raw video + subtitle file

Episode thoughts: Time to welcome our newest regular cast member! Currybread Man is delightfully assholish despite being a "good guy". Also, I guess there's some lore here about how Uncle Jam has made other superheroes before? Kind of weird how that wasn't elaborated more. Will the show address it in the future? That's a crapshoot lol.

Note unrelated to the episode:
I should probably update episode 1's subtitle encoding cuz some stuff got weird lol. It's on my to-do list.

edit: fixed a weird subtitle-timing issue i missed (and 2 typoes). the link'll take you to the corrected video, and i edited the pastebin of the sub file.

Finally got some time to watch the first episode. The animators really love Baikinman. I like how Anpanman's voice gets deeper as they give him new anpan heads. The backgrounds in this show are very pretty; did they get the idea from the books, or is it just because it's an 80s anime?

you know, i've had the toothbrushing episode completely translated for like two weeks but never got around to exporting it. i should do that and then commit to at least doing until the end of the 2nd dvd.

for financial reasons i cant commit to ordering new dvds fast enough to do episodes as consistently as i wanted, and also my work ethic is clearly not good enough to sustain the speed i wanted lol. but i'm very much committed to this project. its adorable and i love it. in honor of uncle jam's voice actor i'll specifically strive to do a bunch more (and actually release episode 3A). i'm quarantined for 12 more days anyway due to exposure to covid19, so i've got time lol
