Bunnings have stopped the tradition of a sausage and bread. So things aren't good at all. Also it's NRL/AFL/Cricket/Racing season and shits getting hosed with. My young and dumb cousin is planning on sneaking into a stadium thats playing a spectator free game and booing over a megaphone whilst hidden somewhere.

EDIT: Also Aussies are very patriotic and as a vet myself ANZAC Day is very important to me and mine. All ANZAC parades and dawn services are canceled so this is trending around the social media and I am very much going to do this and crank Reveille on my stereo into the street.

Manyana bush set to be cleared for development after devastating fires

The only unburnt area of bushland around the Conjola National Park, on the New South Wales South Coast, is set to be cleared this week for a new housing development. The site, owned by developer Ozy Homes, was approved for development in 2008 by the NSW Government — but residents like Sheree Cole will be sorry to see it go. "It feels like we are under attack again," Ms Cole said. "When we drive into Manyana we come through a lot of burnt bush to get home and the solace here, at the moment, is that it's green around us. It is confronting that it is going to change."

Fears for wildlife

With almost no habitat left, animals have taken refuge in the small pocket of land, including vulnerable species including greater gliders, ground parrots, powerful owls and square-tailed kites. Will Eger, a 30-year resident of Manyana, said he was particularly concerned about the greater gliders. "That creature was making a comeback in the national park here," Mr Eger said. "That parcel of land up for destruction homes a number of greater gliders.

In a letter to residents, Ozy Homes said it had installed 108 native fauna nest boxes on and off the site in an effort to rehome animals before work commenced. But with some of the boxes in burnt bushland, locals say it is unlikely the animals would have moved there. The other concern is that without that parcel of land the surrounding bush will not be able to regenerate.

Manyana Rural Fire Service member Colin Beszant said keeping the last remaining green area intact was crucial. "It is a seedbank," Mr Beszant said. "To see that are now get destroyed by bulldozers and chainsaws while the other area is still not recovered — I can't understand why you would do it."

Protests not allowed
A petition with almost 2,000 signatures has been sent to the NSW Parliament calling for a moratorium on the clearing. The petition was never discussed in Parliament, which had stopped sitting because of the coronavirus. After seeking legal advice, residents were advised they would be in breach of health laws if they were to protest. Instead they put up signs around the Manyana area, but those were removed by Shoalhaven Council rangers last week. Planning minister Rob Stokes said the NSW Government would monitor the work, but the developer was within its rights to begin clearing.

Work had been due to start in late 2019.

Ozy Homes has not responded to the ABC's request for comment.

Key points:
- Residents fear wildlife will die if a housing developer begins clearing bushland on the NSW South Coast
- The 20ha site is home to multiple species of native wildlife, and could help the burnt-out bush surrounding it to regenerate
- The developer says it has installed nest boxes in the area and will try and rehome wildlife before clearing begins
- A bushfire tore through thousands of square kilometres of bushland last summer, but 20 hectares near the small coastal village of Manyana were spared.

I had to evacuate at family friend to my place because he is on oxygen and lives in the path. The smoke was so thick at his house.

I grew up in Gidgegannup, Some friends thought they lost there home, found out a couple of hours ago it is still standing some how. Pretty sure the farm I grew up on is gone. All while 2 million people are in lockdown over a single case of covid.

Eh, I'd rather that one then end up with a situation like NSW/Victoria had. Five days isn't that bad.

The fire I'd rather not have though.

You see, the best way to Stop the Boats is a massive swarm of autonomous armed dogs. Strafing a few boats will stop the rest and save many lives in the long term.

You can't make an Omelet without breaking a few eggs. Vote Greens.
My partner grew up in Gidge, and his parents have lost their home.

It's awful, his mum is devastated. We'd go to them, but lockdown rules say no seeing people. Thankfully his sister is with them.

The bakery is still open! Everyone's wearing a mask, sandwiches are being made, and the first batch of bread came out of the oven 2 hours ago.

We also have people to scared to evacuate be they are worried about breaking quarantine. Fun times.
I am with St John based in Merredin, we are send g crews down to the front.

I hope it stays out of Gnangara pines, north half of the city is hosed if it does. The fire fighters are legit worried about it getting into Waneroo and Joondalup and not stopping till it hits the ocean.

Scary poo poo.

God loving damnit. I thought it would be pretty clear that an evac order trumps stay inside unless you want to go to the shops. Really awful to hear that :(

As for how hosed we are, yes we are very hosed.

Yeah the guy with covid had the nasty UK strain. All it takes is a handful of people getting it and spreading it into the community and we'll suddenly lose all the nice things we've had the past year like Fringe festival, pubs being open, live music, etc.

Talking to my friends overseas, I think Perth people don't really get how good we have it here.

Edit: all the messaging I've seen has been along the lines of "get yourself to safety first, worry about covid later".

That's great news! Thoughts going out to your friends in the area, no doubt I'll be out there doing a bit of work around those places as they rebuild, bloody glad people have been safe so far. Gidgie's bakery is an institution which I swing past at least once a month when going to visit family in York.

I feel like I'm aware of how weirdly normal the Perth covid situation is but I still get blindsided often. Was on the phone with an architect in Italy while waiting for some files to download, just general chat, asked how they were going. Oh yeah, both parents dead from it, partners brother was in intensive care for months and lost a leg... cool cool cool. Me? Oh, uh, nobody I know knows anyone who's had it and even back in July I was going to the footy and poo poo... It's such a strange thing to relate to basically the rest of the world when shits been normal.

Yeah, I know. :ohdear:

I think the guy with his mask under his chin was only doing that while doing the video for insta/facebook saying they're still open (not that that's a great reason, but still).

Update: They've had to close now due to road blocks.

I'm guessing https://www.der.wa.gov.au/your-environment/air/air-quality-index is probably your official source in WA. Take note of this bit:

quote:

The AQIs for [some stuff] are based on clock hour averages while carbon monoxide (CO) and Particle (PM10 and PM2.5) AQIs are based on 8 and 24 moving clock hour averages respectively.

I don't know why it is that folks who do air quality monitoring average some stuff over a longer period, but I do know it's confusing when the AQI is bad but you look and sniff outside and it's fine and it's because it was really bad for most of the last 24 hours but it blew away a few hours ago.
