What bothers me about this is the dead silence. When Wickens had his Pocono crash they kept repeating ‘awake and alert’ so he was at least alive (despite horrific injury). This is eerily quiet.

I was at the track, just past the start finish line, once it sunk in how bad the crash was the place went drat near silent. It's eerie being in a crowd of 100k people and only hearing light murmurs.

FWIW I’ve seen people on Twitter (with blue checks no less) saying that Newman was awake and alert when he was loaded into the ambulance, albeit with some pretty serious injuries. However, I still didn’t trust those 2nd hand accounts enough to post those tweets here.

I was in Vegas for the 2008 Daytona 500. My friend had flown out Sunday morning but I had the red eye that night so I had all day Sunday to kill by myself. So I decided to place a couple of bets on the 500. I bet on Tony Stewart because he was my favorite driver, Dave Blaney because he’s a hometown boy, and Ryan Newman because he was 50-1 odds and I thought he had at least a decent chance to win. Anyways, yeah, Ryan Newman passes my favorite driver on the last lap while I cheer him on like an idiot and win $500. That’s my Ryan Newman story. The one and only sports bet I ever won. They just announced he has non-life threatening injuries.
