Sumo brass must be absolutely making GBS threads themselves. There's a realistic chance we end the year with no yokozuna and only one ozeki. They need those high ranking guys for marketing purposes so I'm sure they're not very happy with this Basho. Also, I too would like the goonzeki tag please.

For those not keeping track with the lower divisions. Kaito in the third division won the whole thing by going 7-0 one tournament after going 0-7.

Konstantin posted:Hopefully Goeido thought this through, even if he can't reach his former glory he's good enough to collect a paycheck for a year or two as he moves down the ranks. If I were his coach I would ask him to hold off for a couple of weeks to get over the initial disappointment, and find an exit strategy before hanging it up. Supposedly he said that he gave it all he had in January and he still got 10 losses. The next tournament is in his hometown so he didn't want the fans that have supported him his entire career to see him get thrown around like a ragdoll. It makes sense to me. He didn't go out on top exactly but he had a great career with a lot of high points. If your body says it's time then you quit while you're ahead and can still walk in a decade.

Getting 10 wins or more from a sanyaku rank essentially means you're on an Ozeki run. I can't wait to see who actually makes it between the three of them. I hope Mitakeumi doesn't crack under pressure this time.

I don't think Kakuryu is in any risk. The Yokozuna Deliberation Council set a precedent by allowing Kisenosato to not show up for 8 straight basho. Kak had a Jun-Yusho in January. If he doesn't show up in November or January or if he starts handing out kinboshi then it will be truly over

The shimpan department has decided to recommend Shodai for Ozeki. It will become official if the board approves it in its next meeting (it's usually a rubber stamp). Looks like we got another Ozeki!

Super proud of my boys, except for Ichinojo looking extremely average in the dredges of the lower ranking. Onosho is another one to watch out for yall, just throwing that out there for November. Don't we have a yokogoona tag for winners of the fantasy basho? If so I would like that one.

Opponents have figured out that the trick with Enho is to stay patient, square your hips so you can't get displaced and wait till you can get a hard shove in when he's moving sideways. He's lost almost every fight the exact same way in the last three basho.

I'm enjoying this tournament but man, January is going to be WILD. Two yokozuna fighting for their career. Two kadoban Ozeki. If Takakeisho manages to win this basho he'll be on a yokozuna run. Terunofuji on a Ozeki run. Is there such a thing as too many storylines to follow?

I was screwing around on sumodb and I checked Mitakeumi's recent results. Here is a fun fact. He has been in sanyaku 20 out of the last 22 tournaments. Out of those 20, 14 were as sekiwake. That is incredible consistency. I really hope he can string together three good tournaments so he finally gets that Ozeki promotion.

He really needed a lot of time to grow into his body. The dude gained over 60 kilos between his first tournament and his juryo debut. The extra weight really helps.

That long rear end Ichinojo bout today made me look up the longest sumo bout ever. Apparently there were a bunch in the 30s and 50s that went for 20+ minutes. No footage of those. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us-97rmsch0 This is the longest fight in the modern era. You also get to see what happens when a wrestlers dick is about to fall out of his mawashi.

So Kakuryu injured his leg in practice and is officially out. I have no idea how he doesn't retire at this point. He has only completed one tournament in the last 18 months and the last four years have been destroyed by injury. Hang it up big fella.

So if Terunofuji manages to win this tournament he'll have two consecutive yusho. This is usually enough for a Yokozuna promotion. Normally both the wins need to come at Ozeki level though. Will he be promoted if he gets the yusho or are they going to wait another tournament?

It's kind of bullshit that Shodai doesn't have to face both the other Ozeki. I know they usually schedule the lower ranked guys with the top ranked ones if they have a good record but it's clear Teru is running away with this one. Just let the Ozeki fight!

Asanoyama could've strung two good tournaments together and made it to Yokozuna if this thing hadn't happened. He looks the most like a Yokozuna out of all the guys at the top of the standings not named Terunofuji. The question now becomes who is going to fill that slot of being the next possible Yokozuna candidate? Takakeisho is inconsistent and a pusher. Shodai is Shodai. Hoshoryu is still very raw and doesn't seem to be improving a whole lot anymore. It'll be interesting to see if anyone can separate themselves from the pack in the post-Hakuho era.
