It's actually way better than the new ones when it comes to reliability, especially being the total base model.

Less exciting than it sounds: guy who works there posted an A/T thread about the world of dice manufacturing and was a pretty indiscreet about the company (nothing juicy, just perhaps sharing more about the company than was wise).

Got nervous and a friendly mod kindly deleted the thread.

The interesting part was the poster who went insane than they weren't testing their dice for true randomness to a level that a casino would consider a bit over the top. It's a shame we lost those posts.

Yeah he completely lost his mind.

I still have the thread bookmarked. It had three unread posts forever that drove me crazy and then Sebmojo posted in it and bumped it back to the top of my bookmarks. I demanded and explanation over PM. What was the dice thread hiding?

I found the explanation of "a test post" extremely suspicious.

that poster has snapped at me in the past for similar reasons, i think they have a tremendously literal perspective of the world

it doesn't surprise me that the concept of a die manufacturer not caring enough to ensure true randomness in their product would enrage them

No, they did test their dice. Caliper-Man was getting all bent out of shape that they weren't taking each and every individual die and painstakingly doing every single test known to man on them. Because they might not be truly random! Nevermind how incredibly and clearly unfeasible the idea is!

I thought the employee was like "lol if you think we test for randoms aside from, like, a quick QA to make sure it's not lopsided".

Then we got into the woods about microbubbles in the polymers affecting how true it was or something.

That’s my recollection as well. They specifically contrasted the kinds of testing that’s done to make sure casino dice are fair.

Silly goose, you're here forever.

They got rid of the obviously bad castings and poo poo but at the end of the day they’re dice for pen and paper RPGs and nobody needs perfect randomness as long as they’re not weighted so they always roll 1.

Also you buy most of them in giant bags of them so you can just make a "bad luck" bag for superstitious dice to let guests play with or donate them to a games store for people to use for house games etc

We were actually discussing die randomness in my dnd campaign the other night, and it was pointed out that plastic dice can be tested by tossing the in water and seeing if one side comes up consistently

I wish that op would come back with a dice thread that doesn’t spill all the company secrets but I guess he’s on thin ice.

Those three unreadable posts are making me insane because now I know there’s a vip only dice thread and I’m not invited :smith:

Like some NASA level precision or something and a bunch of people pointed out that literally no casual dice company does this and the reason casino's do is the massive, massive sums of people being made with each dice roll, also literally only 1 type of dice, not 8+ varieties.

Not true. Over time survival of the fittest turns these subtly weighted dice into "lucky" survivors of various storage permutations

Yeah, the difference is that it was memoryholed not to protect sensitive private information but because Axemaniac was trying to save face. It's a great read from an anthropological perspecgove because seeing the kind of white male resentment and gamer rage that that would later crystalize into more concrete reactionary movements and identities rising up to try and convince everyone that it's actually a good game and the PC police are brainwashing them into acting like they hate. Especially fun when a few of those usernames are recognizable, like the guy who made Ion Fury.

I think it just blindsided people who expected the game to me a mess but didn't expect it to be that bad when it came to be offensive. Also I don't think even any of the reactionary movements have ever tried to convince people they were tricked into not liking Duke Nukem Forever or anything else, and I've had far too much exposure to those.

Though the devs, on the other hand? A lot of the behaviour we've seen from 3D Realms- AND Gearbox, for that matter- makes sense in retrospect that they thought that was appropriate to release.

Gearbox had one massive success, Borderlands, and parleyed that into acting like one of the big boys as a dev company when they were creatively bankrupt and their leadership was extremely bad. You could probably fill a book with all the wildly stupid and/or inappropriate poo poo Randy Pitchford did.

I can get around dodgy content or author opinions in the media I consume, one of the worst things you can do is to never venture outside of your ideological bubble or aesthetical comfort zone. Still, the first time I saw the Olsen twins blowjob scene, followed (?) by the part where he picks up one of his turds and throws it around, I already knew I would never buy or play the game, regardless of whether or not it somehow turned out to be a good FPS (I understand it's just mediocre and outdated).

The whole game's themes and atmosphere are just tacky and vulgar, and not in an interesting, subversive, or provocative way, even if it's being exaggerated on purpose. It kind of retroactively justified my vague dislike of the Borderlands series, though I've only really played the first one.
