I just find the idea that someone cares enough to make a response video about it (and other people make response videos to the original response video) to be funny.

Inevitably, a contingent of people formed around CinemaSins that just took plot hole=bad movie to a dumb extreme. Except on top of everything, CinemaSins will miss things, be wrong, or ding for stuff that's setting up things later with worthwhile payoff, so the stuff they ding for being sinful plot holes or whatever aren't actually that and the movie is far better constructed than their one watch-through of it while drinking really conveys to their audience. The videos are also kind of rushed now and the counter can start going pretty wild.

It probably wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal in the grand scheme, but media criticism, especially on Youtube has mostly devolved into mindless nitpicking (thanks to things like CinemaSins and all those people who missed the original points of the Red Letter Media Star Wars videos) that doesn't engage with the movie/tv show/whatever beyond surface level observations and groups of fans gather around to cheer about how they outsmarted that piece of media.

A good example of this imo was the SA-user "shampy" who posted in some Games thread about a gaming collectible of some kind, I think it was Nintendo "amiobos" (sp?) which are like collectible figurines you can hook up to your Nintendo and get some kind of in-game reward, I think. Anyway, he somehow overheard that a kid had a reservation on an out-of-stock one that he wanted, and he then presented himself as being there to pick it up and bragged about cleverly getting the child's reservation, and somehow when sharing this, expected Goons to find it to be a funny story and not give him poo poo about it for being terrible.

Then later on he turned out to be every bit as much as a POS as you might expect someone basically stealing a child's toy to be, when it turned out he had physically abused his fiance. No dox stuff, btw, he just straight up shared it. It feels super common to me, that when the spot-light hits a Goon for a bit, that stuff escalates in absurd ways and it is one of the funniest thing on this website. I don't really mean dog-piles which are mostly fail white-noise and tired owns, and doxing is and should be zero-tolerance permaban; I mean like, when someone gets poked fun at a bit, and then in an attempt to deflect attention ends up sharing wayyyyyy worse poo poo than what got them made fun of in the first place and just dig themselves into a deeper and deeper hole.

A general request on those kinds of stories, because it is especially funny when people self-own like that imo

Another funny thing about Shampy was when FAU finally remembered to permaban him and some other account that claimed to be an "IRL friend" of his showed up to melt down about the injustice of it all, and how we didn't have the full story on him abusing his girlfriend.

I think my favorite Avshalom moment was still the point where a creepy guy posted about how he'd trace over EVE Online CG models to make things like Sexy Elsa:

Anagram of GINGER posted:

I love drawing. I'm just not the person who likes doodling on something for hours and hours when all I have to show for it is one drawing.

I want to improve very much, I didn't say otherwise. Improvement is very much a goal.

I started drawing when I was 8. I'm 32 now. I only recently (two years ago) decided to take art seriously. I've never been happier.

Here's an example of the efficiency I'm referring to. I spent easily 12 hours turning this image

into this image

I have other similar drawings. I could repeat that process and slave away on each and every frame, and it would look fantastic. But the duplication of effort bothered me. I would be drawing a character over and over, so instead of that, I decided to build the model myself, and texture it... so that producing an image with that character in the future was a matter of placing the scene and grabbing a render, then working over it in Corel Painter.

And after a couple of pages of people wtfing, Avshalom does her best to bring the discussion back on the rails:

Avshalom posted:

Okay, let's get this thread back on-topic. Now we're talking about likeable vs. interesting characters, I just thought I'd run a few character designs for my comic relaunch past the thread. My designs in the past have been pretty flat and sameish, they didn't express the characters' background, culture or personality very well. I've been dabbling in a style that mixes photomanipulation with digital painting, so it's got that nice foundation of realism but with a veneer of artistry over the top. It's good because I've always had a tendency to get caught up in re-drawing and worrying about little details. This way I can get a comic out as soon as I've collected the photos. Anyway, here are the characters (all the photos are my own):

Lumina Brennan: The "leader" of the group. Headstrong, a little bossy, secretly insecure and worried about her appearance, but she hides that under a veneer of self-confidence as you can see from her straightforward no-nonsense flaunting of her body. Each of the characters has an elemental power and Lumina's is Light, so I tried to incorporate a rainbow element into her design to evoke the light spectrum without relying on cliches like blonde hair or literal glowing.

Plum Blossom Yang: The genius of the group. Her elemental power is Brain. She is a ninja who is very shy and submissive, but uses her meek appearance to get close enough to her victims to strike them with her neuro-hacking, with which she can take control of their bodies. However, she prefers to control her own body - she's an athlete as well as an intellectual and considers her perfect figure to be a symbol of her power and ability, so she displays it proudly whenever possible.

Mengelina Finn: The sassy girl. Her elemental power is Water. I made her a redhead as a bit of irony. She actually gets really upset when people point out how funny it is that a redhead is in control of water! Although Lumina tends to take control, Mengelina is the true leader who influences the others through snark and sarcastic remarks. Sometimes she can go a bit too far and cause offence, but she has a good heart and tends to be right about most things. She grew up on a secluded island living a subsistence hunter-gatherer lifestyle, so she never learnt to be ashamed of her body and she usually goes naked because it helps her swim faster.

Choo Choo: The alien. Choo Choo's elemental power is Fire. She's actually originally a tool of the invading aliens (the villains of the comic) and is a modified deathbot who was hacked by Plum Blossom and developed sentience and a personality. She's quiet but extremely powerful. She doesn't really understand humans yet, but the other girls are trying to teach her to fit in with human society and constantly reassure her that she's beautiful and desirable to boost her self-confidence, which leads to her slowly becoming more empowered and willing to display her body over the course of the comic.

Let me know what you think! I'm hoping to get the first few comics out as soon as I'm totally happy with the art style.

In theory it's meant to be a "ban on sight" thing, I think, but in practice yeah it's just a matter of not raising any flags. SA doesn't a way of tracking every active lurker on the forums if they put themselves on invisible mode, I assume, given the number of bitter stalkers who create accounts just to lurk and report on poo poo to offsites. And the admin tool to do IP checks is something primitive like "X IP address has been used by Y accounts" which can be kind of circumstantial given there are ways to spoof IP addresses or multiple accounts might just share IPs for other reasons. I don't think there was ever going to be a satisfying solution to the root problem of people lurking the trans threads for doxxing or mocking material other than what inevitably ended up happening, with a lot of trans discussion migrating to a private forum that only accepts new users by referral. SA has no way to stop disaffected creeps from buying lurker accounts to watch threads, and I know the trans threads were popular targets for KiwiFarms and SASS/Something Sensitive for years before all this started. And when Lowtax floated that as a suggestion on SA directly, it was shot down because having a hidden forum just feels like you're hiding away the users when they have the right to post publicly and proudly, on top of it being an important resource for lurkers who are questioning their own identity. People should be able to post and share and even overshare in a welcoming public community, and it sucks that this keeps happening.

The active posters on SA are generally pretty cool and supportive, but SA's history all but guarantees that disaffected psychos are always on the fringe and I don't know if anything besides massive shifts in IRL culture will change that. SA and anyone who volunteers to babysit these forums really aren't equipped to solve societal ills on that scale.

There was a time when it was, but in 2020 that is definitely not the case. Every little section of the forum is insular, with posters going to whatever their interests are.

So when something transphobic happens on the forums, it is the act of individuals and those individuals need to be addressed.

Because yeah, I think there is a lot more overlap in forum users and mod communication than that implies, even if the mods of each subforum are given wide discretion in how they punish people. I wouldn't take it as him saying "it's impossible" but I think it does downplay a lot of the overarching problems here. I do also think that the exchange that started that thread, where one person went "Ugh FYAD made an offsite mock thread" and he said something like "I'm sure they'll let you post there if you asked." was really dumb and only served to upset everyone who was already side-eyeing him. I wouldn't call the original post a very good "warning" but reacting like that only made things worse for everyone.

But you're right this is getting all QCS-y now and it's worth dropping it.
