Different gyms can have very different cultures. Most areas have a few options you can shop around at. Most big corporate gyms I've been to, no one cares. If you go to a more specific boutique style workout (crossfit, whatever) there will be different social standards. Any decent place will give you a temporary trial to get a feel for it before committing to a membership.
