I think saying we'd be better off without Image is very myopic. Yeah, their early output may not have been great (but some of it was!), but just being an advocate for creators' rights is huge for the industry as a whole. Granted, some of those early creators didn't practice what they preached, but giving a large platform for independent creators to try new things truly changed the industry in a positive way. Someone else might have gotten there eventually, but it might not have had the impact that a company started by the era's superstar artists did.

Without knowing what DC/Vertigo offered creators for creator-owned work, we can only really speculate, but I'm not *terribly* surprised. Vertigo publishing was still part of DC, so the economies of scale present there precluded them publishing books by lesser-known creators. Image's model mostly foists the production costs on the creators, plus a publication fee, with the remaining revenue going to the creators. This is probably pretty attractive to a creator, but also makes it easier to print a relatively low-run comic.

It doesn't take more than a quick scroll through Brian Clevinger's Twitter feed to see it's full of pro-Bernie, anti-Trump, anti-Bloomberg retweets. I mean, maybe he's a bad person otherwise (I have no reason to believe this), but he's definitely not "chuddy" by any definition I can think of.

I think they still buy action figures and such from the companies, not through Diamond. Diamond pretty much exists solely for comics and comics-related stuff.

Beanworld is very interesting and worth reading as a whole! I'm glad I snagged them when they were on sale somewhere.

I am going to see if I can find anywhere offering free, legal, completed comics somewhere for download (or at least read online) and try to start a group read thread since it seems like lots of us have lots of time available.

Serious question: so you have this customer who buys basically nothing but cheesecake stuff. You don't want to be the kind of store that peddles in that stuff, but is it more work to just let the dude preorder everything he wants, stick it in his file, and never put it on shelves? Seems like it's leaving easy money on the table, but I certainly understand just not wanting that kind of material/customer around.

Mark Waid's run on Archie is really, really good, too, though definitely more grounded than Zdarsky's Jughead.
