It's not really basic because the clinch is complex to begin with, but many clinch based techniques rely on the threat of the nose to shoulder to manipulate the opponent into a good elbow or knee strike.

So the threat of nose breaking is real, but you expect the opponent to avoid it and set up another scenario because they don't want their nose broken.

I'd go farther into it but I'm drunk and on my phone, but I hope I gave you enough.
