Kind of both? It's realistically 4-6 hours of story stuffed into just over 2 hours in the theatrical cut. Going in blind almost everybody seems to immediately go :wtc: , especially because it still includes digressions that aren't vital to the plot (both from the book and made up by Lynch.)

I don't want to come across as too negative about it though, it's full of weird poo poo that's just kind of fun to see. But it's not uh "good" in the normal sense.

his gender essentialism is mostly saved from being totally loathesome by the fact that he thinks women are better than men, but he's also only able to write exactly one female character and it shows when he tries to have multiple women as viewpoint characters

He also seemed to think that if male power fantasy characters existed, the result would be a complete horrorshow for both themselves and everybody else (Paul, Leto II.)

At least until you get to the later books where Miles Teg is awesome at everything and dies and is brought back to do more cool poo poo, I think.

The book gave me the impression that the Baron's plot wouldn't have worked on the Duke Leto and his Master of Assassins of like 10 years earlier, but both guys are clearly not on their A games anymore. Leto is starting to buckle under the weight of his responsibility and Hawat is maybe just getting too old for this poo poo. So the Duke is fatalistically going through the motions while suspecting it's all hosed, while the Mentat Master of Assassins and all-around genius badass devious motherfucker is starting to get panicky about how he's lost his edge in his old age just as poo poo's getting real. Meanwhile Paul is primed to pick up the slack... in the long term, but not really in time for the crisis because his dad's still having to explain basic realpolitik poo poo to him.

This is probably going to seem like a weird complaint but the biggest thing I hated about Lynch's Dune was 'weirding modules' and I hope they don't go down that road again.

It's not a weird (pun lol) complaint IMO. It's representative of what's wrong with the movie in general.

The big practical problem with making a 2 hour-ish Dune movie is that there' s just too much stuff in the book and too little time in the film.

So they add this extra thing, with no basis in the book, that requires its own scene to demonstrate it, and it sort of makes no sense anyway. You made your basic problem worse by adding new material, and on top of that the new material is dumb and bad and more expensive to film.

They just made their job harder for no good reason. And it's all over this movie. It has some good performances and rad visuals, but it's also both rushed and overstuffed because they kept adding extraneous stuff to a movie whose fundamental problem was always going to be "how does this poo poo even fit?"

The Weirding Modules also accentuate and foreground the speech and language themes that are in the book. Paul can literally kill with a word.

What they actually show is that they allow ANYBODY to kill with several different words.

The wierding modules just appear out of nowhere in the movie and functionally are just voice activated laser guns. They don't DO anything interesting, it's just an overly complicated way to get pew pew into the movie.

It also undercuts the idea of the Fremen being especially capable warriors, because what the movie actually shows us is that they're given a crate of secret weapons and win by shooting people with them.

What really got me is how the Dune miniseries shot all its "outdoor" scenes in front of matte paintings in a way that was extremely jarring.

It's like they REALLY went out of the way to light the scenes and frame the shots to emphasize as much as possible that you just had people walking in front of a painting.

One interesting facet of Dune is that it's full of impressively competent characters who nevertheless either eat poo poo and fail constantly, or succeed in ways that only make their lives more hellish while causing horrific unintended consequences.

If Dune was being written in 2020 everyone with power would be a huge moron rear end in a top hat who kept failing upwards, while everyone with half a brain was just an ever more depressed spectator.

Even Rabban is too smart to be a 2020 villain, since he at least had the sense to say "Hey guys maybe we should look into these Fremem, they kind of seem like A Thing that might matter?" instead of just shouting FAKE NEWS at everything.

poo poo, Herbert hammers home the point that Paul being "one of the good ones" has almost no bearing on how it all plays out except at the margins, the "good guy" white savior imperialist protagonist kills billions anyway. Like we literally read Paul's thoughts where just just says it to the reader.

Paul doesn't save the Fremen, he turns them into shell-shocked drug addicts from his forever wars and destroys their culture at home, all because his dad was on the wrong end of a dynastic beef among the space aristocracy.

The first story follows a standard hero's journey template more, but it's already pretty heavy handed about how none of the messiah business is going to end well, the "savages" are wildly underestimated by everyone not just in killing skill but technical sophistication and vision, the religion Paul is playing the messiah of is manufactured and he's acting out a role, how the Atreides "good guy" image is manufactured, and so on.

It also feels to me like both Leto and Thufir are past their primes and burned out on all the machiavellian poo poo but feel obligated to go through with it anyway.
