FlamingLiberal posted:What I'm not clear on is whether they are still going to make that movie which is a Trek prequel set even before Enterprise. It was being 'fast tracked' before the ownership change. I can't find any updates from this year so I'm assuming that was quietly shelved. It's definitely been a long time As for an actual movie, some more Lower Decks would be great, but I just don't see Paramount doing anything good for the foreseeable future

Since Larry's nepo baby took over I fully expect Star Trek to poo poo the bed and make non-woke Star Trek. Maybe that Ferengi TV show was a back door pilot?

skasion posted:Both Kirk and Spock are way out of character for most of those movies, but Pine is fun to watch at least. Quinto is just a drag For me Pine's Kirk is similar in just feeling like a disconnected alt-universe character more than he ever feels like Kirk. They lean into some Shatner-isms a couple of times but more than anything that just reinforces that caricature is really not what I'm after, the SNW characters capture the spirit far better even when doing things that don't necessarily line up with the original stories Kelvinverse really just kind of feels like something that can be left behind and relegated to Memory Alpha trivia at this point

Perhaps if we had Chris Pine and the rest of his crew play the "Night Shift" aboard the Enterprise-D? That would allow the reuse of those expensive Picard sets, and could allow a more "adult", Late Nite (read: boob exposed) experience. Patrick Stewart could be given the use of an off-road vehicle. Not for the film, mind you, just to keep him occupied and away from the producers and scriptwriters. We could call it... "NIGHT CREW" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTnXy23yXgU

The Chairman posted:The way it was described, it sounded like it would be immediately after Enterprise season 4, the period just prior to the Federation's founding, but it's also been a full year since anything was last announced about it so I doubt it's ever going to see the light of day anyway https://trekmovie.com/2024/05/21/x-men-producer-simon-kinberg-reportedly-in-talks-to-oversee-star-trek-feature-films/ quote:The project is said to be set decades before the events of the 2009 movie that was directed J.J. Abrams, likely around modern times. It is said to involve the creation of the Starfleet and humankind’s first contact with alien life. But then there have been so many half-baked movie ideas floating around and it was in such early pre-production who knows what it would have ended up being. My theory behind it is that some executive just said to make a movie they could slap the Star Trek name on but not have to spend a lot of money on sets and special effects, giving us Modern Earth Trek.

Beyond is the only good JJTrek movie but that its not the actors fault.

One thing I remember about Beyond was Simon Pegg being annoyed on social media because they did a commercial right before release that spoiled a major plot point.

He was also annoyed by the first trailer being absolutely awful and reinforcing initial fears that this was going to be Justin Lin's Fast and the Furious In Space. I don't think there was a single shot that didn't have the characters wildly jumping or flinging or punching or explosions or something. IIRC Pegg literally said something like "okay, trek fans, trust me, there's more to it than that, okay? I put in actual Star Trek" But then of course it's pretty well-established how completely and utterly Paramount hosed the marketing of Beyond. Was he expecting that the Paramount marketing department was going to look at that and make an updated version of the Christopher Plumber narrated Undiscovered Country teaser? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKfkkhEbUlY

Great trailer, but the total lack of new footage makes me think the effects were behind schedule or something.

They filmed from April to late September 1991, for a release date of December 6 1991. Never mind the effects, they had to start promoting the movie while they were still filming it. By comparison, The Final Frontier had six months between filming and release.

And boy did it feel like it. I will never get over the moment I rewatched V for the first time in like 15 years realized they just had a static jpeg of the Enterprise-A on screen for certain VFX shots. It just had zero depth or weight to it at all.

TFF is the one in particular that suffered from effects issues because they couldn't get ILM and had to go with some smaller studio that was like their 4th choice. It really shows.
