It's the year 2020 and you're working on a show that is clearly intended for both broadcast and streaming. Can you please figure out a way to not make the commercial break cuts so jarring when there are actually none inserted? Maybe just insert a short three second blackout. Jump cuts from DRAMATIC REVEAL MUSIC to unconnected following scene don't work if there's no buffer.

I'm enjoying this show for what it is but I've been really at my limit with "artificial life/synthetics/robots that look like people" thing that every sci-fi show has done to death in the past ten or fifteen years and I'm looking forward to the day when every other show doesn't rely on "they're just like us but SUPERHUMANS"

You’d think Picard would have been all “hey maybe don’t stand spitting distance from this Romulan” after what happened last time.

Agree w/everyone who is on about how long this is taking to get underway. Despite all the action over the past three episodes, I feel like I just watched a cold open. Excited to see them get underway.

Disappointed that his Tal Shiar buddies weren’t coming, but I guess someone has to look after the dog.

Also holy poo poo that was Hugh?? I just assumed it was some rando ex-Borg from that particular cube. Did they mention it and I just happened to miss one line?

I like this ceiling drop down to tracking shot, even though there's no rotation. The Cube is dark so to light the set there's shafts of light coming up from below, then the holograph.

I’ll like this shot but I’m getting pretty tired of every starship interior in Nu-Trek being dark and gloomy (and some shade of blue I guess?). Give me some brightly lit corridors again. Heck, even slave mining mode DS9 was brighter than I feel new trek tends to be.

Ed: I’m obviously not expecting a borg cube to be brightly lit, I’m just thinking out loud about recent trek in general and this specific shot just reminded me that absent of knowing it’s a borg cube it could just be some edgy engineering set.

All this Picard made me go back and watch early TNG and I just want to call out what a magical experience it is to listen to these backing tracks where everything is that weird late 80s suspense synthesizer music.

I’m going to try to pinpoint where it trails off because I definitely don’t remember it in the later seasons as much.

Ron Jones was fired from TNG during the fourth season.

It’s not even that; I feel like there’s an evolution of music around the same time as the ultra campy uniforms made their way out. For sure the style of music changed after he departed, but even during his tenure I think we went from weird 80s synth mystery cues to more orchestral type.

I could have done without the torture porn eyeball extraction but overall the opening made me sit up and take notice.

I already hate everything about freecloud, it's so over the top that it's just out of place.

The facer pimp outfits are just .. I'm doing the chef kiss things .. on the poo poo sandwich that is freecloud.

For a hired pilot, Rios is sure ready to just start integrating into his "cargo"'s scheme.

Picard's villain persona -- I can't deal with this

And the most important thing about this episode:

Mostly a good episode. I'd say mostly a great episode in context of the lacklustre feeling hours we've spent over the past few weeks.

I continue to mostly make zero emotional attachment to most of the nu-crew. Raffi is still uninteresting and I don't particularly care about her subplot. I'm not sure what the deal with Rios is but he's just... there...

I guess I care most about Dr. Scientist and her internal struggles now, but until this all gets tied together it's just some disembodied plot floating in a vacuum.

I was secretly hoping Hugh would ditch the cube and start adventuring now that he's going to be on somewhat less friendly terms with the Romulans.

I mean it's a pretty safe bet that we haven't seen the end of Space Legolas so I'm hoping he takes Hugh and yeets off the cube somehow. But obviously I'm not going to be surprised if they do kill Hugh off during the daring escape.

Speaking of set design and user interfaces, was there ever a reason given that Disco had these awesome hologram comms and they’re never used again over viewscreens other than Lorca didn’t like them?

Other than the obvious “lol no way can we retcon these so let’s never mention them again”

I thought Enterprise was hosed up from scanning the weird alien planet/archive and Pike just wanted the holograms ripped out while they were at it?

That’s what I’m wondering though. Other than “it’s a tv show get over it” this just seems like disco is the one ship that’s using view screens while everyone else in the federation has badass hologram chat. And everyone in the federation then went ahead and forgot they had awesome holograms by the time TOS and TNT era rolls around

Disco is like the one friend you kept your AIM account around for because they wouldn’t go install a better chat app.

I know it’s stupid and inconsequential and I’m reading way too much into it but it just makes me laugh how they obviously wrote themselves into something they couldn’t retcon so they just Poochie’d the technology.

E: and my bad, I thought it was Lorca not Pike who was the techno luddite.

Pretty good episode imo

Bla bla bla I’ve said it every week and I’ll keep saying it until it isn’t true. Raffi is a bad, uninteresting character and no matter how hard the poor actor tries she isn’t going to be able to act her way out of a badly written role.

The planet stuff was ace. The sad dead kid thing was pointless but ok. If the writers trying to tug unnecessarily at my heart strings is the worst thing about an episode then I guess it’s pretty okay imo.

What a poo poo way for Hugh to die. Like that was so unnecessary and such a wasted opportunity for a genuinely interesting recurring character that I’m actually irl a little angry. And not in a “goddamn I hope sexy Romulan sister eats poo poo for killing Hugh” way like the writers likely intended.

Wait maybe I mean, pretty good episode in spite of everything I posted.

The more I think about Hugh’s death the more annoyed I am. Aside from the obvious reason I hate it, I just thought back to how stupid sexy Romulan only killed him once he said the super secret phrase that broke his diplomatic immunity instead of, oh, I don’t know, just killing him and telling everyone he was going to do something..

Pretty good episode. Good pacing, plot was decent.

My nitpicks:

- Would have loved to see Seven in control of a poo poo ton of Borg. Not loving that they spaced the whole collective and she can't just, like, shut the doors while in charge of the cube, to save a handful.
- Actually, I guess that's it? Surprisingly few nitpicks.

Not really anything to do with the current episode or anything and maybe this is just a "me" thing, but I really hope that TV gets to a point soon where we can stop making artificial life the central plot of sci-fi shows. It's best used in small measure for effect, like Data in TNG, but when you revolve entire plots and series around it (Picard, BSG) the premise just .. ehh.. fizzles and loses my interest. Maybe that's because I haven't seen any series do anything truly interesting with it yet.

Fully prepared to be called an idiot for thoughtcrimes tho

Discovery is mostly good except the overarching plot is garbage. It didn’t feel like Start Trek but more “The Adventures of Michael Burnham and Her Coworkers”

Also the super saturation of Michelle Yeoh by the end is really overdone. (spoilered for the guy just watching the series now I guess)

I know I jokingly said I tried to forget as much Disco as I could but I actually did enjoy (most of) the characters and the visuals are hella nice even though they have all the NuTrek stuff going on.

I really liked the S31 episodes of DS9 for what it’s worth. They didn’t seem out of place but also didn’t seem overblown. I think S31 is a topic that makes for a good episode or two but the more you take it seriously and weave it into the fabric of the Star Trek universe the less interesting and more trope-y it gets.
