Got my first shot (Pfizer) this morning at a mass vaccination clinic in Sacramento. They are incredibly good at it. At each step I had someone who escorted me to the next spot I needed to be in. Took maybe 5-10 minutes from when I walked in to when I had a shot in my arm. While I was waiting the 15 minutes afterwards, someone came around and scheduled my second appointment. By my very rough math, they're doing 2-3k vaccinations per day from there. If you're within driving distance of Sac, check out the UC Davis clinic at Scottish Rite.

I'm at T+5 hours now, just have mild arm pain and a ~1 degree elevated temperature. I can't taste my WiFi yet but I'm hoping for strawberry. :D

In my town they're supposedly having about 50% of all appointments nullified because people don't show up (they're doing 65+), would it be possible to get in contact with the people doing the vaccinations to get an early shot somehow (I'm 32) or would it be a fools errand to try and get it early somehow?

(I feel like it's cheating and immoral since there are people more 'worthy' since I'm unemployed and has been in self-isolation since like january last year, meaning I stay at home and only go to the store near closing to absolutely minimize exposure).

I'm swedish, if that matters.

The mRNA vaccines have a finite shelf life, so eventually they're going to get thrown out. It's not immoral to ask if there are leftovers available. Can't hurt to try.

Yes, at-risk groups should be prioritized, but anyone who gets immunized helps everyone.

Dude, go for it. Especially if other folks aren't showing up, the whole idea is to move as many vaccine shots as fast as possible, by the time someone else will want the one you took they'll have a bunch more.

:siren: Florida Goons (Pinellas County for certain; click Find a Location to see if your county is offering) can use this link to get Pfizer vaccine appointments :siren:

Got my first Pfizer shot today where Everett College used to be on East Bay (near the Racetrac) and am surprised how quick it was. After a quick temp check outside all you need is your appointment e-mail on your phone and your Florida Driver License to get in. No need to sit down at first, they do it military-style with you standing up and them then sending you to an observation room with spaced out chairs and an active proctor where they time out for you the wait for fifteen minutes. They even give you a sticker! They stress in the observation room the importance of rotating your arms to increase blood flow and my arms only are starting to get sore now about six hours from injection when I came back home to play video games. It is fantastic having someplace in Florida where people are genuinely good at their jobs.

I thought finding a first shot was rough, but the second is an even bigger pain in the rear end. So many places refuse to schedule just second shots, but there are a few places (including where we got ours) that only does first shots and not second, it tells us to find our own second shot.

If you check a local vax subreddit or FB group they might have specific information of the best time to hit up the websites. Sometimes you need to hit them right on 5am or whenever they open up new slots but it seems like every city and every chain store runs things differently and add new slots at different intervals and at different times of day so there's no overall rule for the best way of going about it

I live in London, Ontario, a town very deep in out of towners due to the university. Despite the fact that 90% of courses went to fully online classes they did not hesitate to allow students to come back to town, residence or off campus regardless(granted with some restrictions, spoiler: they didn't work).

On top of all that, university kids will be university kids and they want to socialize all the time. This has lead to 8 different outbreaks within residences over the last month and the area code which houses the university and most of the student rental properties shat out a covid test positivity rate of nearly 30% last week.

We've got a great system where I live. I registered in January and haven't heard poo poo since then. I can check a website to see the canton vaccinated 7000 people yesterday and that there are 10 more groups to open up before I'm eligible. No energy wasted on making a timetable or even estimates. That's Swiss efficiency for you.

More efficiency comes on Monday! Rather than wait for a meaningful proportion of the population to be vaccinated or the reproductive number to be under 1 or the number of new cases per day to be below where it was at the start of the second wave, we're just opening almost everything up on Monday so we can go Back To Normal with no more of this stupid waiting around for numbers and science and poo poo.

Honestly I have mixed feelings about the openings; The outside dining I think will work, although I don't know how protected like the actual employees are. Gyms opening up seems pretty unnecessary and this is coming from someone who is strongly craving some deadlifts. Also the fact that they are allowing singing in enclosed spaces is borderline criminal, imho, but god forbid you get in the way of the choirs in this loving country. Cinemas is an interesting conversation for me because like immediate, gut instinct is that it's a bad idea. But then the more I think about it, you can spread out, they're crazy ventilated and generally speaking people shut up in theaters, after the intro. So no comedies, I guess. And I seem to remember reading a headline that said that there were actually not really a source of transmission , but I am definitely willing to be told that I'm wrong on this front.

But yeah this vaccine rollout is pretty abysmal, especially from the standpoint of information clarity. The likelihood that I will get the JJ when I travel to the states in June is getting higher by the day. This loving cold snap isn't helping anything, I don't think. Did you get your 5 tests per person? The ones that Roche said are only 30% accurate for asymptomatic carriers? Did you get those?

greazeball
Feb 4, 2003

Yeah I got my tests but mostly because my wife is really keen on them. She and I have really isolated ourselves well I think during this whole time but she still wants to be suuper sure she's clear before she visits her mother. She has suffered from some pretty strong anxiety in the past so I haven't told her my opinion of the test but I agree that they don't seem all that useful. So far she hasn't gotten a false positive yet, but she's only done two.

The completely lovely thing about the opening for cinemas and restaurants is that the businesses will still be absolutely hammered by the reduced capacity--especially restaurants and cinemas. All of their finances have been calculated based on a certain capacity and they cannot meet their obligations running at 50% or less. The cost of turning the lights on and paying enough staff to just open the doors is already going to make it unfeasible, plus all of the sanitatation theatre that has to go on so everyone can avoid liability for any infections.

It's going to be a lovely several weeks until another lockdown is the only choice just in time for summer. Coinicidentally, we're voting on COVID powers in June so I think the SP might have just decided this is their last chance to let the SVP and the other fuckheads really wreck poo poo so the whole situation is extra grim just when it's time to go to the polls.

Don't worry, we're planning on starting up infection outbreaks again here in Australia at some point, perhaps later this year. Our PM has said that we're going to have to open up international travel at some point for vaccinated people but we'll probably durop the mandatory 14 day hotel quarantine and just let people quarantine at home. He also said that this will definitely lead to at least 1000 community infections every week but he doesn't want people to get upset about that or the state governments to close borders, we're just going to have to learn to live with it

quote:

The Prime Minister has flagged allowing Australians to travel overseas and return home, without going into hotel quarantine, if they are vaccinated against COVID-19.

However, Scott Morrison warned the vaccination program was not a "silver bullet" and the nation would need to be prepared for the potential of "many" more COVID-19 cases if international border restrictions were to be widely lifted.

"If we were to lift the borders and people to come, then you would see those cases increase and Australians would have to become used to dealing with 1,000 cases a week or more," he told Nine Radio.

"Now, it is true that our most vulnerable populations would be vaccinated, but I don't think Australians … would welcome restrictions and closures and border shutting and all of those things again."

National Cabinet last week asked the federal government's expert medical panel for advice on when Australia could consider opening up to other countries, beyond the New Zealand travel bubble starting later this month, as well as alternatives to hotel quarantine.

"What I'm working on right now, is that where an Australian is vaccinated under our program, when they will be able to travel overseas," Mr Morrison told a community forum in Perth.

"I would think in the initial stages, particularly for essential purposes, business, things like that, medical reasons, friends and family, important events, funerals, so on.

"That could be done and return to Australia without the need for a hotel quarantine of 14 days and to be able to do that either at home or under some other less stringent environment than you have with hotel quarantine.

"Now that would require being vaccinated and I think that would be an important incentive for people to do that."
