There are only 8000 recorded cases of SARS. The Wuhan Flu will pass that in confirmed cases tomorrow.

One of the ones in the Central African Republic one is "designate a family member in advance to be a contact person for the media, NGOs and members of Congress in the event you are taken hostage". Also "leave a DNA sample with your doctor in case it's, um, needed later on."
Is there a real problem in the CAR with Americans being held hostage?

And all talk of China's likelihood of publishing false stats aside --

They've added around 1500-2000 per day for the last five days

25: 2.7k
26: 4.4k (+1.7)
27: 6k (+1.6)
28: 7.7k (+1.7)
29: 9.7k (+2)
30: 11.2k (+1.5)

What's the likelihood that those numbers represent the limit of their ability to diagnose new cases per day, and not the actual rate of new infections?
Pretty high, especially since you can be infectious and asymptomatic, and you need a hospital scanner to actually check and see if you have anything that would tell them you are infected before showing outward symptoms.

One of the big vectors of transmission is fomite, which is everywhere when someone's hacking up their lungs. Tossing a body into a bag and burning it all up makes sure there's no risk that your funeral home and mourners don't get infected.
Fair enough, I was not aware of that but it makes more sense if the bodies can possibly cause other infections

So after several days of large, but roughly linear increases I'm wondering whether that means something in terms of containment. I remember in 2014 Ebola something similar happened - when people were initially were very concerned about exponential increase, and attributed the increase to limitations of measurement rather than an actual picture. I would guess that testing capacity increase in Wuhan is a big priority, so if we're not seeing bigger numbers day by day it is possible the containment has some effect.

Or, you know, all the testing kits are clutched in dying fingers and doomsday is near.
It sounds today like we are getting more confirmation that they are running out of testing kits in China, which means it's really likely that a lot of cases are not being counted

I suppose if you have mild symptoms there's no real way to tell the difference between a mild case of Covid and a mild flu?

Fairly sure it's just the flu and fingers crossed that's the case but i'm keeping myself to myself for the time being. I was visiting the local hospital the last 3 weeks to see my mum who was there but as i'm in the UK and there's been no reports of anyone getting it near me (or at that hospital) I think i'm safe.
