All the BOOHOOO about being sued also comes from the fact that being medically made right after a botched procedure costs money. Most people who are the victims of medical malpractice get barely more than enough than is necessary to fix themselves back up.

It’s the same hot McDonald’s coffee bullshit - seems frivolous when a right winger talks about it, then you learn that the coffee fused her labia shut and she only asked for medical bills and was initially denied.

And some sort of single payer system basically takes away the need for most malpractice lawsuits. If the follow-up care required as a result of a mistake is already paid for, the only relevant lawsuits are when the doctor is being outright negligent.

That's not quite what it says.

There's nothing about being able to pay the credit card immediately; in fact it says the opposite, that they don't have enough in savings to pay it off right away. Meaning "I can't afford this, but I can incur some debt"

"cut back on expenses" doesn't imply that the person has a budget, more like "I can't afford this but I can always stop making principle payments for awhile"

10 of your 90 were "I can't afford this in any sense, a friend or loved one would need to give me money"

Reminder that the context is an Asian cruise for Americans. Even if the cruise is $1500, the flight and other incidentals are probably going to make the trip at least $2500 per person - so $5000 for a couple or upwards of $10,000 for a family. On top of getting 10+ days free coordinated for everyone, it shouldn't be a multi-page back and forth on whether that's a luxury outside the reach of the large majority of US families.

MREs are good because they are stupidly calorie dense, around relatively easy to transport in a pack, and have their own heat source. They aren't a cheap or tasty source of food, and usually aren't the best choice if you are preparing to hunker down and weight isn't a serious factor.

Also, it's generally just a waste of time and money to stock up on food.

More relevant is starting to plan for potential disruption to your routines due to public precautions. Validate that your work from home setup is still functional if it's been a while, start considering childcare options if schools were to close for an extended period, figure out if you have alternatives to public transportation if you use it, and if you're in a decision making capacity at an organization of any size start creating contingency plans for the impact of people needing to stay home sick or suppliers (especially east Asian ones) being temporarily available.

i’m a big fan fan of having one high calorie ready to eat can of food (for some reason I went with Beef Stew and Corned beef hash) that can be served over a starch like rice/pasta etc, and then a canned fruit/vegetable.

you can plan out a mildly balanced thing that has probably two large servings for each person, for each day, 1500-2000 calories

then have dried beans as a long lasting backup to that, and breakfast stuff like oatmeal or granola bars etc.

the more ways you have to flavor food the better too (bullion cubes, spices, sauces etc)

also I seem to be expressing my anxiety about all this with food prep which is at least like, productive

And really most things that have to be cooked and aren't produce last well. Flour, pasta, and other grains like buckwheat can add variety, lard and oils will add calories and flavor, and as you said shelf-stable spices and other flavorings will change things up.
