While they're not even on the same level as Planet of Twilight, Crystal Star or even New Rebellion for pure cringe, The Black Fleet Crisis deserves special mention for the insane level of wasted opportunities they represent.

You got a dark fleet of top tier imperial capital ships lost due to a rounding error that just fell into the hands of a bunch of already pretty armed and dangerous colonialist xenophobes

You got the 5th Fleet, made up of brand new ultra high tech new republic kit sent out to root them out

You got Han fuckin Solo brevet pinned as Commodore to lead the drat thing in a nod to his success in rooting out warlords with super star destroyers post-Endor

And they managed to make it a total loving snooze.

New rebellion is also kinda of a fun idea, you have some damaged Kid with force powers who basicaly burns down the hosed up rulling class of his planet and then starts a vengence mad bomber crusade against neighboring worlds and the new republic for doing jack poo poo about it. and then it kinda turns into a boring mystery and then he dies.

crystal star is worse probably but i do love that the lore nerds tied it into the jedi outcast/academy games.

i think my issue is everyone treats kreia like she is completely and utterly right and like she clearly isnt fully. it reminds me of everyone nodding along to kylo ren going full Nihlialist aboud letting the past die at the end of last jedi. there are lots and lots of cool parts of the game but it gets dragged down by the Authors OC.

I think the most egregious example of this happens early in the game, on the first planet you visit after getting off the Peragus. Some guy who's down on his luck bumps in the party and asks for some money to help him get back on his feet, and you options are basically either help the guy out or tell him to piss off. No matter which option you choose, Kreia berates you for not fully considering the consequences of your decision, and as she does so, the camera follows the guy as he walks away from your party and you see something bad happening as a result of your decision; either he gets mugged, or goes on to mug someone else. And it kinda sets the tone of "Kreia is always right," going forward, which is annoying.

This actually kinda works if you don't know the game is tricking you. It's only on a replay that it becomes obvious how forced it is.

Or if you're the kind of person who save-scums for the optimal result.

Yeah. I'm not saying it's good in any abstract sense, just that reasonable people might not notice.

the other thing i never liked is "actually revan and malak were brain washed by the sith emperor and etc" and that sucks. i always prefered that malak and revan escape from the sith empire and basicaly break bad because they saw that the republic wouldnt do dick about the mandalorians so they go full "hard men make hard choices" and eventually because the dark side is corrosive, they lose the plot and just go for conquest

WHIM AND FOPPERY

The thing about Kreia is that they knew she'd be loathed like that so they saddle the MC up with that lifelink to her so that she has to stick around because seriously, why would anyone put up with her sliding into a master position? Why would a Dark Sider not just shank her given half the chance?

My brother pointed out all those years back that for all of her fence-sitting bullshit, Kreia ultimately teaches like a Sith, right down to the "either the apprentice gets merked or they merk the master thus becoming the new master" at the end.

I think part of that is due to Drew Karpyshyn buying into the hype of his own character. After writing the first KOTOR game, he wrote some books about Darth Bane where he decided that all the ideas Bane had about reforming the Sith were actually the result of him playing KOTOR in the basement of the Sith academy, and even the reason he started calling himself Darth was because Revan did it first.

Add a few more years of the fandom slobbering all over Revan, and it totally makes sense that Karpyshyn would contrive a way to absolve Revan of responsibility for the evil things he did.

yeah. like you can sorta make an argument that revan is basically a different person post brain blast via concosion. but even as a revan fanboy, i like the idea that he genuinly turns to the dark side out of fear and some bullshit toxic "only i can stop the monsters in the woods" type deal. thats more interesting the gently caress off super DBZ power level sith emperor mind loving him. like i have issues with 2 being up its own rear end on a meta and character level but post 2 old republic stuff was deeply stupid.

of course she does since that's what she is. there's nothing that says you have to be neck-deep in the dark side to believe the sith philosophy, it's just the usual route that things go for force sensitives. for all her faults kreia is at least a deeper thinker than most other force sensitives, or maybe more of an "outside" thinker - in some sense she is probably cutting herself off from the force when she isn't actively using a power, given what her ultimate goal is, and so she doesn't necessarily fall cleanly into any particular category just like most normal people. that's part of why she is interested in the exile in the first place - the state you start the game in is the state that she actually wants for herself, if only she could bring herself to give up the power that force sensitivity gives to her
