I'm an illustrator working with a poet friend of mine to put together a book about cryptids. Our working title is C is for Chupacabra, and below is an example of our work based around the desert southwest's Yucca Man cryptid. Yucca Man Yucca man Walk in the night Yucca man Talk but he not fight Yucca man Stalk until first light Yucca man Got to stay out of sight Yucca man Won’t hurt..just a bite Yucca man Don’t cause no fright Yucca man Ain’t no bloodsucca man He just trying to get by alright Anyways, we're working on putting together a pretty comprehensive list of cryptids for this book, and that brought up the question of what actually is a cryptid? My personal opinion is a weird creature we haven't proven the existence of yet, with a contemporary source, therefore Bigfoot is a cryptid but Medusa would not be. That definition leaves a lot to be desired though. Here are some other questions I have: Does there need to be some sort of corroborating evidence for it to be a cryptid? eg. Bigfoot and the Patterson-Gemlin film or Nessie and the surgeon's photograph Is a local legend a cryptid? If so, what about La Lorrona? She's basically a boogeyman, but also possibly a ghost or a demon as well. If we count her, are ghosts/demons also cryptids? Is a cryptid any creature of legend that has captured our cultural imagination? If so what about things that have been debunked like the Feejee Mermaid? That's just lovely taxidermy that is now a proven hoax, but would it still count? Also, who are your favorite cryptids? The more obscure the better. I'm glad to do a lovely pencil and sharpie drawing of your local weird creature-of-legend. I did one the other day for a friend of mine Dog-face Woman, a creature that haunts a bridge in Indiana after a horrible car accident that killed her and her dog. Don't ask me why she has a rolling pin. I do not know.

IMO individual pieces of evidence are allowed to be debunked without discounting the cryptid as a whole. Therefore the Fiji mermaid is not a cryptid, but mermaids are. The Surgeon’s Photo is a hoax, but Nessie lives.

it's a cryptid if a bunch of sad, lonely dorks regularly meet up to try and prove its existence

It's not like there are any contemporary accounts of them that aren't "I went to a mermaid bar in FL and watched a lady in a fake tail swimming around." At least there aren't any I know of. I do like this answer to the Feejee mermaid though.

I would assume that it's the ID you need to be admitted into the crypt.

Do Ogopogo and no, not just because of the Venture Bros thing. (Though also because of it.) I was big into cryptids as a kid and Ogopogo was one of my favourites solely due to reading about one incident where a bunch of different people around the lake saw it at the same time.

i liked Ogopogo because it was a stronger palette swap of Leviathan in Final Fantasy 2

I feel like ghosts could be cryptids if it's a specific ghost, or we're not sure what it is, but one of the possibilities is a ghost. See: duendes

A ghost is not a cryptid because it is not an animal or creature. Demons in general are also not cryptids. however, the jersey devil, which is a specific creature like demon is a cryptid
