It's a sorry state of affairs when this man will be Taoiseach in a few days, having cleared himself of wrongdoing using the Trump/Nixon defense of "when a president does it, it's not illegal".

I wonder will any journalist or politician try to revisit what happened in light of recent events. I recall at the time people were questioning the nature of his relationship to the man he leaked documents to, given that they had attended pride festival together. At the the time it was homophobic to insinuate that as Varadkar was in a committed relationship. Yet now when he was caught kissing another man, it's homophobic to say he was cheating as he's in an open relationship. His relationship to his partner seems fluid and takes on whichever form can be used to deny Varadkar of wrongdoing.

Unfortunately I have kids so avoiding them bringing stuff back from school is impossible unless I mask at home.

Since October there's been a flu or flu like illness just making its way around their classes like an ouroboros.

The HSE used to give free anti-gen tests for schoolchildren but they cancelled it over the summer so no ones seems to care if it's covid or flu and will load their kids up with cough medicine and send them in.

I mask every time I go further than the bin. I've had a mild sniffle back in 2020 and a bit of sore nose from long days out masking but on the other hand when I get back indoors I no longer need to scrape the black gick out of my nose like I always used to have to in London.

But also my psychopath boss is walking around work coughing on everything and chomping on antibiotics that don't seem to be working and if I can help it I'd like to be as protected as possible from her. Plus I managed to have several close calls over Christmas, not just the one I posted about :mildpanic:

I guess the constant scandals and just having FF/FG in government has broken most people.

It's been quiet here despite the spate of recent scandals. I'd say the current one has legs to take down the government but they seem better able to deflect from scandals than past governments could.

At this point Leo says something, a leak appears that proves him a liar, and we all just go "ah yeah, there it is so" and move on. There seems to be gently caress all mechanism for actually forcing a new election beyond individual TDs deciding to leave parties.

Skull Servant

In my experience, people have mostly given up on the government and are just waiting for the next election. People seem numb to how bad they are and kinda know they can't do anything, so there is no real point getting angry.

On top of that there isn't any major party that is racist enough to win over the people who seem to be the most angry - those whipped up by English and American culture wars. The groups that are attempting to exploit this seem to be too right wing on other elements (abortion, LGBT issues) to appeal to the general population.

There would be major space for a party that held anti-immigration views but was socially liberal on other social issues. I feel like FF are going to attempt to triangulate to this after Martin goes, but I don't think it will stick.

To be fair, the groups whipping up poo poo on this issue are the same groups that whip up poo poo on every issue since the 80s. It's always Justin Barrett (whose surname I momentarily brainfarted on and remembered via googling "Justin nazi Ireland" :v:) and Hermann Kelly, with support from John McGuirk, and Dave Quinn. Once in a while Niall Boylan throws some shite out and every now and then Peadar Tóibín remembers he exists, checks the party Twitter feeds and slowly abandons any pretense of being a left-wing party to shite out something that gets mocked. The angry ones are thankfully an incredibly small minority, as proven by how many of them are "local" to every town in the country when there's an opportunity to get in front of a camera at one.

Yeah I can see that being the case, but I've noticed a few early 20's lads who grew up watching PewDiePie and Sargon of Akkad getting sucked into thinking that Sinn Féin were never involved with the IRA because the real IRA wouldn't put up with socialism and feminism and suchlike and there's a secret Qanon-like IRA just waiting to fix everything any minute now.

The party name literally just being two pronouns probably broke their minds.

Provisional Qanaon

A few years ago I had to take down a bunch of IFP posters that were plastered around the college. They've been trying really hard to get that crowd but I think in an Irish context they aren't going to get that far. They're not recruiting from a sympathetic crowd. Hard to argue that foreigners are the problem when a solid 30% of them are going to be emigrating.

The anti-immigrant crowd seems to be gaining a bit of ground. Mostly spurred on by the governments inept handling of the Ukraine refugee crisis. I see a lot of people being susceptible to that kind of rhetoric if they were more articulate. Just before Christmas I heard quite a few strangers complaining about how the government can magic up homes for 50,000 refugees but can't house 10,000 homeless. Which should show that homelessness is a government choice driven by their lack of interest in solving it. But I fear if the opposition doesn't focus on the government choosing to not fix homelessness, it leaves space for the far-right to turn it from a government failing to bollocks about their great replacement, NWO agenda.

Yeah that talking point was doing the rounds when I was home for Christmas, but it generally ends sharpish when you ask when they last heard the people making it talking about the need for helping the homeless. Most of the time because they suddenly realise that they also have done gently caress all for the homeless and actually give a poo poo about looking hypocritical.

Yeah reiterating the point his family are all just like that. I think his sister attempted to sue her employer a few years ago because they weren't catholic enough or something. Apparently they're loaded and can fund this kind of stuff themselves.

yeah, a really good analogue here is the SNP in Scotland, who captured the soft left populist vote late in the 2000s, early in the 2010s, and they've recently prevented a right-wing nationalist party (Alba) from making any headway in Scotland by virtue of not being reactionary dipshits

granted, they are also full of 'ideological wish-wash', not least because they aren't doing anything about the transphobes in their ranks, but when the unionist opposition is full of far-right wingnuts and liberals, it's clear that we could be doing a hell of a lot worse lmao

anyway, don't expect an SF government to govern dissimilarly to the SNP government in Holyrood, ie. they won't try for a 32 county Ireland with any haste and they'll just spend their time doing standard European social democratic poo poo, which I guess is better than whatever the gently caress FFG have been doing for the past hundred years lmao

OnTheDitch received and has released the october ABP report that the housing minister squashed.
It's only 38 pages but the dry, legal style of writing so it's a bit hard to get through. Highlights seem to be that most decisions were made by the same 2 person team. And that developers started withdrawing applications the Ditch started publishing exposes. Seems to indicate there were dodgy dealings with Paul Hyde and they were trying to withdraw them to leave no evidence.
