Spurs. I believe they are anatomically what would be the bird's thumbs, if it still had hands like a dinosaur instead of wings: It's similar to the adaptation you see on bats, where their hands have become the wing, with the thumb bone sticking out of the top:  Bats use their thumbs to climb and hang... they have to "invert" and hang from their thumbs instead of their feet to pee and poo, otherwise it will run all over their bodies. Birds with spurs like Lapwings use them to intimidate other birds or predators.
