Bill Burr was a guest on Snoop Dogg's podcast show and he said that Richard Prior had a way of making fun of white people that wouldn't make white people defensive, and to me, that's the sign of a great joke, when even the target is laughing at it too. The trans stuff with Jim Norton reminded me of it

I think the point with Jim Norton's trans bits is that trans people really aren't the target. I apparently need to rewatch the special, but I recall him joking about internalized trans/homophobia more than about trans people and that's what made it genuine.

Great clip and he's spot on.

now have a (what I believe to be, in my current state) a humorous interaction driving home with my wife:

Wife: "I'm gonna write a folk ballad and call it 'Suckin Dick in Old Town Tustin'"
Me: "Why would you write a song about my Tuesday mornings"
Wife: "Software development not paying the bills?"
Me: "Some of us aren't in it for the money"

i like stewart lee. his bit is mostly saying jokes, but then saying them deadpan in a serious british voice which is always a laugh. then he says political things I agree with and I like that. I also like his turn of phrases, favorite one describing people standing in line to buy a comedian's dvds instead of pirating them akin to "captured partisans digging their own mass grave"

I'm not doing a great job of selling him but if I took it too seriously it'd probably be a disservice because I don't actually know much about comedians so any comparison term I come up with would be inaccurate and purile. Like I could call him a british mitch hedberg except more wordy, but that's inaccurate, that's stupid, don't listen to me. He's probably either someone you find funny or exceptionally boring tho but I like him, which is probably a scathing indictment to anyone whose seen any of my other opinions.

Came here to post Patrice, sucks to have only found out about him when he died :smith:

I saw Patrice several times but he never struck me as particularly good or interesting at all, just a generic Def Comedy Black guy comedian doing sassy jokes about girlfriends and white people. Then after he died literally everyone said he was the greatest comedian ever. So I have since heard all his stuff, most of the O&A content, the TV interviews etc. I think he is really good now but I can't tell if I have been brainwashed. I think if he was really as good as people say I wouldn't worry that I was so brain washed.

For your consideration...
Whenever Normies talk about Stand Up, I am always sure to bring up my love of Maria Bamford to show how diverse I am. You can also put her albums on in your car when you are dating a new girl or your mother in law because she doesn't really do much swears or edgy stuff. She is probably the most legit original, brave and meta Comedians ever. Sometimes incredibly bleak, but it can also just be really dumb humour too.

If you are not in the mood to listen to her she is very annoying though, and I recommend you listen to her albums rather than watch or YouTube clip them because her physical performance is really over the top theatrical, zany and kind of 'Nickelodeon 1995 randome monkey cheese *holds up sporke*' type. She acts too cute and does all these wacky facial animations. It's just distracting and you can miss out on the sophistication, writing and surreal picture painting of her words and voice.

Her TV shows are pretty good too, but her stand up is underrated.

Resting Lich Face, everything you have posted about comedy tells me you should at least give Cum Town’s Nick Mullen a shot, or at least listen to his podcast. Maybe it’s just because I’m a 90’s kid but as a queer identifying person I like having a podcast where the hosts can make gay jokes that are funny and that I can laugh at/with.

If something is funny than it’s funny. Whether or not something is offensive should be secondary to whether or not something is funny, because the humor belies intent, that the joke itself is coming from a place of inspiring joy and laughter, not from dragging people down.

Norm is great, but the best comedians working today for my money are Dave Chappelle, Wanda Sykes, Bill Burr, and Tom Segura. I don’t like Whitney Cummings particular style but I concede that she is very smart and funny, just not my flavor. Dropped off Bert Kriescher pretty hard after Secret Time.

Sebastian Maniscalco is uproarious if you’re in the right mood for “Andrew Dice Clay’s mannerisms but without the boorish content”

Richard Pryor is a true OG and he hosed Marlon Brando, that’s the most gangsta poo poo I’ve ever heard in my life.

Norm is a peerless high water benchmark for all stand up comedy, and if you don’t think he’s a top 5 all time great, ask yourself why every comedian on the planet worships him.

Mitch and Greg went way too early for how funny they were, same with Patrice, although he has gone on to help raise millions of dollars for diabetes research posthumously thanks to Bill Burr and all the other Boston comics.

Sarah Silverman lost her edge after her Hulu show but I have faith she’ll come back and be an amazing Joan Rivers style “old horny lady” comic, which we need right now.

Maria really is the most original female comic I've ever seen- her whole act is uniquely her own voice and she doesn't fall into any cliche dating material or anything like that. I recommend anyone watch her show Lady Dynamite on Netflix season 1. Season 2 falls off really quickly unfortunately and was seemingly cancelled halfway through. She is really sharp in it though, and the production company that produced Arrested Development made it.

I remember always thinking "this guy is gonna be huge one day" and then he died :(. His final Opie&Anthony appearance is rather haunting. Everyone tries to help him out, but no one is qualified to do so, and they don't know what to say. The dude was totally bipolar and it's a shame he never got any treatment for it. In this interview he talks about going on drug manias on airplanes and poo poo- hard to tell he had this side to him because his comedy was so clean and sharp.
