new NUC looks good because i want a computeaux for flight sim but would be horrified if someone came to my apartment and saw I had anything that looked remotely like a gaming PC and I prefer a box you can just pass off as a PetCube

psiox posted:don't rpis not actually boot linux (very well) in 64-bit mode? raspbian is arm7/32-bit only because they want to support everything going back to rpi2 (iirc rpi1 is arm6) meanwhile the third party distros like ubuntu or whatever generally have arm8/64-bit which works fine on rpi3+ and rpi4 but given that the largest model is 4gb ram there isnt that much reason to pick arm8 over arm7

looks like shuttle is still in business? pretty similar market as nucs, just made in a time when people needed space for a cd drive never got one because they were way too pricey for a student im the front firewire port

Progressive JPEG posted:id gotten the impression the armv7->arm64 jump wasn't as big as x86->amd64 at least? but i dont really know one way or the other arm64 is an entirely new ISA that is designed for hardware optimization (parallel issue, reordering, speculation, etc). whether the cpu you use actually takes advantage of that is another matter. if it’s a Pi then it’s probably running the barest cortex A cores (A53) which does almost none of that. on a good core arm64 can vastly outperform armv7 code. on a lame core it will be dragged down by its bigger pointers and lower instruction cache efficiently.
