current AMD “NUC” options aren’t that great, the pricing on some sites like simplynuc are silly.

they kinda suck but are ok if you don’t mind having no graphics, or 5 year old graphics.

don't rpis not actually boot linux (very well) in 64-bit mode?

tbf i have been pretty disappointed in the pi ecosystem, seems like babby's first embedded lunix device that is actually more closed/hobbled than it should be or compared to competitors

that said, i have a zero w running influxdb that works just fine for my purposes

raspbian is arm7/32-bit only because they want to support everything going back to rpi2 (iirc rpi1 is arm6)

meanwhile the third party distros like ubuntu or whatever generally have arm8/64-bit which works fine on rpi3+ and rpi4

but given that the largest model is 4gb ram there isnt that much reason to pick arm8 over arm7

pretty similar market as nucs, just made in a time when people needed space for a cd drive

never got one because they were way too pricey for a student

armv7. arm7 is a twenty year old microarchitecture.

ram is not the only reason to switch to arm64. it is an architecture more suited to high performance than armv7 and predecessors.

im planning on switching a bunch of rpi4s from raspbian to armv8 on ubuntu once 20.04 is released - not really interested in beta testing whatever they rushed out for rpi4 support in 19.10 even though it sounds like its functional today

id gotten the impression the armv7->arm64 jump wasn't as big as x86->amd64 at least? but i dont really know one way or the other

arm64 is an entirely new ISA that is designed for hardware optimization (parallel issue, reordering, speculation, etc). whether the cpu you use actually takes advantage of that is another matter. if it’s a Pi then it’s probably running the barest cortex A cores (A53) which does almost none of that.

on a good core arm64 can vastly outperform armv7 code. on a lame core it will be dragged down by its bigger pointers and lower instruction cache efficiently.
