8 days until AFLW begins.

Carlton has continued its approach of nepotism for the list manager role, poaching Nick Austin from the bulldogs, he is the son of former carlton premiership player and 200+ gamer Rod Austin.

He was also the recruitment officer for richmond from 2012-2018
https://twitter.com/CarltonFC/status/1222358052218654722

Carlton has also reduced its historical debts by $3m, which his half of what it was this time last year. This debt is mainly leftover from the legends stand at princes park which didn't get may years of use before the afl built docklands and ended games at PP. The club hopes to be debt free by 2022, it has been in debt since 1996. Hopefully then it can then get rid of pokies.

Especially since most of this revenue has been from massive membership sales last year and this year (10k up as of this time last year) and the 10 year puma deal.

So finally, we're less of a basketcase as of the middle of last season.

Sort of. They got the 'best' pickups aka 2-3 stars, but then a lot of recycled players dropped from other clubs.

It was a decent game, richmond were obviously well behind carlton in terms of skills in the first half but things started to gel. Their backline seems solid, until the third quarter when Carlton finally kicked into gear, the tigers were rushing a lot of our shots on goal.

Katie Brennan was also playing hurt for the second half apparently.

Speaking of injuries, Andy Maher might miss a week or two, a shame.

Saints and Carlton were invited to join the VFL to boost the number of games per week. Splitting away from the VFA. Hotham is older than some of the foundation VFL clubs, now known as North Melbourne.

Back then they were the poor clubs. Carlton didn't have a permanent home and were nomads, playing games at the MCG, Royal Park and just open parkland at the southern end of Princes Park. A stipulation of joining the VFL was that grounds needed to be fenced to tickets could be sold. This spurred Carlton to set up a proper home ground at Princes Park, where we remain.

Saints just remained smallish, Junction Oval being home, but only 1km away from South Melbournes homeground at Lakeside Oval, a larger club with more supporters.

Anyway, looks like the AFL is actually not grabbing every dollar possible.

quote:

Footy fans are set for a big free kick, with the AFL to axe unpopular transaction fees for sporting events at its Marvel Stadium in Docklands.

A three-year price freeze on AFL regular season match tickets will also be announced on Friday. The $3.15 booking fees — which fans have been forced to pay simply to buy their tickets — will be removed for footy, Big Bash cricket and A-League soccer matches at Marvel.

This will save sports fans at least $750,000 a year, but footy fanatics will still face transaction fees at the MCG and other AFL venues

The ticket price freeze will see general admission seats set at $27 for adults and $5 for kids at every regular season AFL match in Melbourne, starting from Round 1.

AFL reserved seat prices, set by clubs, are due to be announced in the next fortnight. AFL chief Gillon McLachlan said the measures aimed to make games more affordable

He said the axing of the booking fees “removes a barrier and provides an immediate saving for fans’’. Mr McLachlan added: “Our commitment continues to make AFL games as accessible and affordable as possible.”

The transaction fee cull will apply to every seat at Marvel and provide a direct saving to fans, with the AFL and Ticketmaster agreeing the cost will not be passed on elsewhere.

At least 43 AFL matches will be played at the venue this season. AFL Fans Association president Gerry Eeman applauded both decisions as “a significant commitment’’ by the league to make sport more affordable

“It will help keep the game accessible, which is good for the long-term health of the game,’’ he said. “Booking fees are often used as a licence to print money. Hopefully other venues take note and follow the lead of Marvel Stadium.’’ More than 1.3 million fans attended footy matches at Marvel last year.

St Kilda will play 14 matches at the ground this season with Western Bulldogs (12), Carlton (10), Essendon (nine), North Melbourne (nine), Hawthorn (five), Collingwood (three) and Geelong (two) fans also set to save

The change will be in place when tickets go on sale to AFL club members on February 24. Mr McLachlan also confirmed free admission for children to MCG and Marvel Stadium footy games on Sundays would return this season.

Ticketmaster will waive all transaction fees for the AFL State of Origin Bushfire Relief match at Marvel Stadium on February 28.

The decision to axe ticket fees at the venue follows a similar decision to eliminate a $5.90 surcharge on tennis fans buying seats to this year’s Australian Open. MCG spokeswoman Sophie Henderson said there was no immediate plan to remove $3.10 transaction fees at the home of football.

“Patrons purchasing tickets to AFL matches at the MCG in 2020 will incur a fee of $3.10 per transaction,’’ she said.

Of course, they announced that the centre circle will be a coles logo this year, instead of the toyota one. So it'll look like absolute garbage painted red. ugh.

Carl v Coll praccy is on now.

Fourth quarter just ended, two more quarters to come... sixths?

CARL 14.9.93

COLL 9.3.57

Everyone available to play on the list is getting a run, so lots of rotations with about 10 players on the bench. Even the 4 players training with Carlton for the final list spot are getting gametime.

Edit: It turned into an 8 quarter match, with the last 4 to be 10 min quarters. They then abandoned that idea and didn't play the final 10 minutes, I think collingwood gave up and wanted to go home.

Final scores after 7 quarters (x4 20min, x3 10 min)

CARL 16.10.106

COLL 11.8.74

Great game by the Dogs and Blues this arvo. Fantastic weather for it too.

Both teams had a quarter with no score made, but Carlton was able to charge home in the 4th against the strong wing and kick a few goals.

Georgia Gee is the goat, with a great performance kicking 3 goals, coulda kicked 4 or 5 too.

The AFL now owns 49% of CD. Of course you should be wary.

They are trying to expand into american sports leagues too. They won't do much in terms of afl except raise the prices for access to stats, or have telstra onsell them via the afl app.

Because they poached 3 'big name' players but they were first season big name players and not up and coming talent.

People saw how dominant North were when they poached so many players and assumed Tigers would be the same because they were bigger players.

North poached a spine to build a team on though so it was different.

Carlton wasted a lot in the first quarter and should have had two or three goals at quarter time.

Great to claw it back and then gain the lead. Superior marking won it while our subpar handballing almost cost us the game.

Chop first five weeks off, everyone plays everyone else once

This.

Except the afl will push to play round 1, just as a locked out match.

The thing is, somebody on an afl list or working at an afl club will be infected and confirmed in the next two weeks. Law of averages say it. (Hell, Lauren Tesoriso from Richmond aflw is in lockdown because her room mate just got home from Japan)

This means the season gets suspended or pushed back.

But they can't push the season back because the cricket world cup is on here at the end of the year.

One solution is reorder the league. Lockout all games, bring all teams to Melbourne and play 1 game a weekday, 3 games a day on weekends, primetime tv one after the other until someone gets sick. Try to knock out as many games as possible in ~3 weeks then suspend the season and work it out later.

Waits between games would work out to 5 of 6 days for teams. It might work.
