They had an important person from Champion Data on SEN this morning, interesting to hear them defend their garbage analytics. They have the Tigers at the top and Geelong near the bottom of their defensive rankings, and were asked to explain it. The reasoning is that they rank the defence in an individual basis, and don't take into account a team defence style of play, so the Tigers get ranked high as they run it out of defence and don't kick backwards, while the Cats get "penalised" as they are more structured out of their backline being happy to kick backwards/sideways if needed. The CD guy basically just said, the Cats backline is bad according to their algorithm, and wouldn't admit that maybe the algorithm is a bit poo poo instead. I somehow have less confidence in CD stats now than I did before.

I do enjoy listening to Liam Pickering defending players pay cuts with a straight face: “Dusty has gone from 1.2M to 600k, that’s a big haircut”, then getting absolutely berated by the next 10 callers. Some footy people’s lack of understanding of their own privilege is breathtaking.

The concept of a hub isn’t a bad idea per se to get footy happening again. However, you can’t enforce those kinds of workplace conditions on someone with a months notice, especially for a job where that has never happened for the profession. People in the army, FIFO workers, and international sports people know what they’re getting into and can arrange their lives, and their families lives to prepare and deal with the extended separation. If the WA and SA clubs are going to be expected to make a long term “camp” in Melbourne, then the AFL need to be prepared to bring families and the necessary support to make sure the disruption can be minimised as much as possible for everyone involved, players/coaches/trainers/doctors/physios/etc. Melbourne is full of nice, empty, Airbnbs at the moment. And getting sand in your jocks about it being a disadvantage for SA and WA teams, as a Freo supporter I don’t really care tbh. I’d just like to see some footy. And who knows, maybe being isolated together as a club in Melbourne might galvanise one of the 4 sides and produce an amazing story in a really weird season. I think from memory, Gil has said he’s happy for AFL grand final to be played up to and including 31st of December.

Largepotato posted:They have no stadiums in December. You could play matches at places like Arden St, they’ve got immaculate surfaces and don’t have any cricket on them. You don’t need a stadium if no one can attend. Also, international cricket probably won’t happen, which will also massively effect the BBL as you will be missing a large number of players.

teacup posted:You really think this? In terms of getting the competition back up and running again, yeah very much wrong. The AFL are desperate to show that the rules they impose on the clubs are followed to the letter, as the Federal/State Govs basically don’t trust the AFL and it’s teams to maintain distancing/quarantine rules. If the Govs don’t trust the AFL, we’re not going to see a season happening for a long time, if at all this year.
