This is a thread for sharing African guitar music. A lot of the clean, intricate guitar work and bubbling bass lines in various African pop genres can be traced back to one man: Franco Luambo, frontman of the Congolese rumba ensemble TPOK Jazz. Here’s an early song of theirs.

Desert blues is so loving good, and its lineage is fascinating. Traditional West African music is brought to America by the slaves who turn it into the blues, then rock evolves from blues, then both American rock and the blues are brought back to Africa where the people of the Sahara mix them together with the music that gave birth to them in the first place.

I hope so; D'Gary (pronounced "DaGar") is wonderful.

Here is a full concert apparently at the Kennedy Center in 2003 or so; I did sound for a stop on that tour and met him for the first time. Loved that show.

That whole compilation has some serious bops plucked from a really interesting time in the postcolonial history of Africa. I remember being interested on the strength of that cover art alone and it was part of what started my dive into music from the continent.

it’s so awesome to see someone make extremely chromatic chords work for them. This is from the 1960s?

1974. They were called Os Jovens do Prenda - the youths of Prenda, which I think was the suburb of Luanda they were from. Active 68-74, and then 81-now with some personnel changes.

Time to bring out the big guns, all time great from Nigeria, international breakout star, "one of the most influential musicians of all time", no I'm not talking about Fela Kuti, but jùjú legend King Sunny Ade. If you know Fela (or don't) and not Ade, get familiar or you're loving up. I dare you to listen to the first track on this and not have some kind of life changing epiphany experience

Thanks to Youtube continuing on after listening to some of these tracks, I've found Kanda Bongo Man, who is Congolese but was recording this stuff in Paris. The guitar is less out front than some of this, but love the songs, so here we go:

resurrecting this thread with this nigerian highlife album from '77, like it says in the name.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oxEYvuSqRc

I could see like 8 copies of this album in this legendary record digging picture (of frank "voodoo funk" gossner) and wanted to see if it was good. If you like highlife, it's good. If you don't like highlife or haven't heard much of it, you should prepare to relax to some long grooves.
