It’s because capitalist china is rapidly becoming the world’s next superpower - more countries signed that letter supporting their concentration camps than countries that opposed it (U.S aligned countries). That just shows you how much China’s economy is strong-arming the world into their submission, and it’s only going to increase.

Interesting how Italy is the only "western civilization" country that didn't take part in all 3 votes. Spain took the side against China in the Uygher votes but not the HK vote (probably due to Catalonia), Russia took the China side in the Uygher votes but not the HK vote, this decision I don't get. I guess related to the 2 former Georgia provinces?

There are fare bit of change in votes in sub-Saharan Africa, I guess it was related to the current ruling parties?

Italy was riding Xi's dick pretty hard before the pandemic because it was run by euroskeptics. It's one of the reasons the EU is increasingly pissed at China

I think this is what Merkel will purpose with Xi after the US election: you honor this and this and this human right bottomlines and we will stay out of the US/China fight.

I get they have decided its not worth the economic ramifications but it seems a little crazy to me like if a western country was doing this they probably would be going nuts about this regardless of sanctions.

Monarchs are fond of using theocracy as a method of control and don't actually give a poo poo about adherents to that religion if they're not paying tithes. They're only going to direct religious outrage somewhere if it serves to suppress dissent and desire for reform.

The sanctions is only one of three requests. With our closed borders 2# is already hard. 3# is a "freebie".

Australia is in an undeclared trade war with China as well as a cyber war. They have tariffed barley 75% because they took the lead for simply asking to make an investigation into the virus. US is triggering specific Hong Kong sanctions and related to the Uighurs. EU has made dénouements as have Japan and Canada. UK has the BNO as aggravatingly flawed as it maybe is the largest contribution thus far.

It's not that nothing is happening, it's that there is a clear lack of leadership that the US normally takes because you know, Bunker Bitch, virus or not. It's uncoordinated. Hence why I have this line

The thing is we are invariably going to "Hurt Chinese feelings" because No Why. With the pandemic our economies is almost decoupled. National is obviously feeling the pressure as they keep trying to open the borders with China in mind. Labour is already aware having specifically rebuked National on this.

The letter isn't so much a list of things I want as much as it is a set of policy options they no doubt are already considering. Any one of those would be great, the hidden 4# option is what I really want. Jacinda's leadership is bullet proof, more powerful than any direct action we can take. People overseas adore her. Certain things are going to happen, many things from many countries, what isn't happening is leadership.

No it hasn't.

(2020)We have lost all tourism and student dollars. It's only a matter of time till we get tariffs thrown at us because we voted one way or another and end up in a trade war like everyone else. Plus we got all the other trading partners. Australia is $14B in exports, 2 way $27B. China is $19B, 2 way $32B. Tourist is $2.79B China, $2.88B Oz. NZ is basically China's bread basket Milk Bottle. We can live without Chinese mobile phones instead get Taiwanese phones, they can't live without food. Even if they slap 100% tariff they are far more likely to buy our milk over some local stuff.

Total trade is $86B exports, 2 way $169B. Chinese $$$ isn't as big as you think. A lot of stuff that is made in China isn't made in China which is getting moved back home or other less hosed up places. As new numbers come out I expect any growth to flatten out if not decrease due to the virus as there is lag as things are ordered months in advance. Source is straight from the horses mouth.

https://statisticsnz.shinyapps.io/trade_dashboard/

Taiwan #1 is worth $1.5B, 2 way $2.5B for the curious.

China isn't some mega monster that can crush everyone. The problem is we are divided.

-Enter without a warrant
-Restrict your movement
-Freeze your bank accounts
-Confiscate your assets
-Spy on you carte blanc
-Have ISPs scrub things off of the internet/restrict access

Among other things.
