Idk dude it sounds completely believable to me "failson born to power can't take good advice from others, and suffers the consequences because daddy isn't immediately there to bail him out" is the most realistic thing I've ever heard. Add in the Americans just punitively bombing any and all signs of life in the process of war crimeing their way up the peninsula and its extremely real feeling.

Realtalk "dont cook with fire because it makes your position obvious" isnt the sort of thing an average conscript would consider, especially conscripts largely made up of peasants with little training. It is extremely believable that someone with poor training and little battlefield experience would make thus mistake and it probably happens a lot. The fact that Maos son got killed doing it is just funny because of how ignominious it is

McGavin posted:Why are you so invested in salvaging the reputation of noted failson Mao Anying? I just think its funny. There's two stories. 1) he died like a normal soldier 2) the air raid sirens are blaring, the brave general is warning him "PUT OUT THE FIRE", and there in the middle of this story is the son of a former deadly rival of Deng, who just happens to be party leader when this official account is published, and he's *gluttonously cooking up special, privileged food his brothers in arms can't eat, and he is immediately served his just desserts while getting his comrades killed. So cinematic! But 1 is the obvious propaganda and 2 is REALITY ITSELF.

Someone cared so much about how factual it is that they decided to hold it up as an example of how they can tell propaganda from reality. If you just want to enjoy a funny story, I'll say no more.

Like, all the contemporary accounts agree that he was killed while cooking, they only disagree on whether he was cooking eggs or not.quote:Though the egg fried rice story is well known in China, it is not embraced by everyone. Cheng Pu, the lone survivor from the fateful breakfast maintained in an interview that this detail is false and that there would not have been any eggs available on the battlefront. Another Chinese writer, Cheng Xi, held forth on CCTV that Mao Anying was actually baking an apple peel. Still another historian, Yuan Jiang, claims Anying was actually warming up frozen bread and porridge.

If you want some idea of how indiscriminate bored US fighter bombers can be when they have total air superiority, watch this. https://youtu.be/Y_dYBOgLbHc It's P-47s strafing anything that moves, or doesn't. Tanks, troops, trains, trucks, cars, horses, random people, airfields, barracks, sheds, barns, houses, bushes, etc. Even though it's 22 minutes long, there's tons of footage not included of fighters strafing people (POWs) going to the fields, civilians going to church, and anyone who happened to be out in the open. Just like in Korea, US airmen were told that there would be no repercussions for killing civilians, only Allied soldiers. They were told to destroy/kill anything or anyone who might help the enemy war effort. There were tons of incidents where families were killed in their homes and random kids playing in groups, but that wasn't really a concern because war materials were also being destroyed. In Korea's case they also intentionally targeted anything that would aid food production (bombing fields, irrigation ditches, and dykes). It wasn't until the bombing campaign in Vietnam came into people's homes via TV that the civilian population of the US started to push back against the practice.
