The dude watched his mother get executed by the KMT, lost one of his brothers during a raid where his other brother was permanently brain damaged, then lived on the streets for years. He then spent most of his adult life serving in the military (mostly before Mao ruled China). If he was insulated from the worst of warfare because of his birth he can hardly be blamed.
