More world leaders need to follow her example. The best response to China's hurt feelings has to be...

quote:

"There was no further need to explain Denmark’s position to China, she also said."
“I don't think anyone is uncertain about how Denmark works in terms of free speech,” the PM said.

That's all you need really. "We have free speech, you know exactly how this works, stop expecting us to change for you". Then again, China has been getting used to western corporations bending over, and pulling their asses agape whenever asked to by the CCP.

There are some tourist heavy areas where you will see trash just left around. You know that isn't being done by the locals.

The bus tours are a good source of rude people who leave behind trash and have a predilection towards vandalism (in most cases due to ignorance, and not malice). I posted about the Chinese bus tours and the havoc they wreaked on my cousin's Kayaking business in another China thread, but I think we've all heard about Chinese tourists climbing cherry trees, jumping in them, and breaking off branches to get better photos. When you live somewhere where you have a nearly year-round supply of loud, rude, and clueless people that you can almost never escape, you get to be a little resentful.

Spetz/C-Milk are pretty goony, and I don't want to know the former's opinion on black people in South Africa, but I never got the impression that the were "racists" against China. More that they were frustrated with not being able to penetrate the "foreigner barrier" and watching the place become more and more of an Orwellian hellscape. I think it's more disappointment rather than hate, although they do (as everyone should) hate the CCP. Then again I can see how when talking about Chinese societal norms, it would sound racist to someone who doesn't know China.

This got a chuckle out of me, that mustve been surreal

I was expecting it because my wife (then girlfriend) told me what was going to happen when I checked in alone. She also passed alone the "scam story", and also told me not to follow anyone who wanted to show me around, to a tea house or restaurant, etc. (basically all the scams you hear about).

What was surreal, was the next evening when I was trying to find the Sauna room. I asked the front desk which floor it was on and they said "down". I got off at the basement level and the laundry lady waved her hands and told me to go up. I went back to the front desk, asked again and they told me the 4th floor. I got off, walked around, and it was just another floor or rooms. I went back to the front desk, grabbed one of their brochures and pointed to the picture of the sauna. The desk lady took me to the elevator, pushed the 6th floor, and said "thank you". I got off and could tell it was a "different floor". One end of the hall had a bunch of KTV rooms. Another hall was full of conference rooms, and the last room I checked out was a hooker buffet room. Basically you go to this room, and there are like a dozen or more girls who do a show on a stage with lights and music, then you pick the one you want and she takes you to a room. When I walked in everyone snapped to attention and they turned on the music (the lights were already going). I stood there stunned for a few seconds then left.

Turns out that hotel didn't even have a sauna room. I asked a room maid, and she pointed to the hotel across the street, then held up 2 fingers and then pointed "up". I went to that hotel's sauna room on the second floor then went back to my room for a nap.

I knew two Tankies in University. One of them I used to go to high school with, and another was a fried that he made in university. I would occasionally hang around with him out of boredom/pity the first year since we were both from the same small community, and going to a new place can sometimes be tough.

Anyway, he was one of those guys who never fit in in high school, didn't have many friends, no chance of a girlfriend, and his dad was thoroughly disappointed in him for being an awkward nerd going off to do a liberal arts degree instead of something useful (dad's words). Anyway, he felt that modern western society was to blame for his troubles and potentially lovely prospects in life. He was sure it must have been western society's fault. . . otherwise it would have to be his fault. After university he went to Cuba, had a horrible time in what should have been a socialist utopia, blamed the west for ruining it, and then was preparing to leave for China. He never made it there because he asked me the process to get there (I had already been there for six months by this time) and I outright said, "If you hated how capitalist Cuba was, then China is going to majorly gently caress you up!"

Last I head of him (~10 years ago), he was teaching in South Korea and had hooked up with a girl from Ireland, and they were going to Thailand next. He had completely dropped all aspirations of being a vanguard of Communism, the west was no longer that bad, and maybe he was the problem. He also passed on that his friend (the other tankie I didn't really know) had also moved to Korea to teach, and had started dating a girl who was from the university we had all attended, and was no longer a tankie either, and they were planning on moving to a fly-in reserve to teach for a year or two, then settle down in Southern Ontario.

TLDR: "Getting some" cures tankies.*

Wife's cousin in Jilin City was approached by a pair of "not cops" in blue raincoats, respirator, rubber boots, goggles and gloves armed with a "Type 97" assault rifle and told to show his ID. He did so, explained that he was allowed to go get some essential supplies, and continued on his way.

He's stopped again by similar guys (not cops, not doctors, possibly Chengguan) and they check his ID and send him on his way. He notices that their apparel is very similar, but different. Off the shelf brand raincoat (still blue) and their masks are a different colour. This time he gets a better look at their Type 97 rifles and sees that they are airsoft (he was in the PLA for a stint and before that was an avid airsofter).

He sees another pair walking down a street a few hundred meters away, and heads towards them to get a look. Same story, but these guys are armed with an even cheaper airsoft version of the Type 97, like a 90% plastic version.

Now he's really curious.

He walks towards a shopping mall that's a little out of his way, and there is a pretty big presence there. At this point it's become clear that they have been pulling extra bodies from whatever agency has some spare manpower, and have given them instructions on what to buy to create a "uniform uniform". Some people are wearing yellow kitchen rubber gloves, while some are wearing latex. He even saw some who were wearing the disposable plastic ones like people wear at Subway, and throwing them away after every interaction. Also the "weaponry" has gotten ridiculous. The PLA soldiers who are in uniform with masks and gloves are using (pinned) Type 97s that are used for training and are unable to fire Automatic, while some of the no-names out and about have obviously raided a local airsoft store because their loadout is hilarious (he was a gun nut, joined the PLA, and left after he realised that they don't actually train soldiers to fight). Some of the weapons he saw. (all airsoft, with crude attempts to paint or cover the orange tips)

H&K MP5s
AK-47s
G-36s
Some obviously fictional shotguns
An MG-42!!!
And tons of AR-15 variants.

Overall he says that the officials in Jilin City seem to be doing a good job at keeping people from bunching up, making sure they are wearing protection, and keeping stores orderly and free of people rushing to try and clean shelves.

Blistex has posted about it again and may cut and paste but basically, yes. Their training is all about domestic uprisings.

It was from a post that I think predates "China.jpg" and I can never make the search feature work, but here is a tldr

Wife's cousin signs up to be in the PLA
After about 6 months they are told they will do target practice with the Type 97 assault rifle.
Everyone is excite and bragging about how they will be the best shot.
Next day they line up and one at a time shoot 3 rounds out of the rifle which is pinned to semi-auto only.
5 Minders per new soldier at the firing line.
Everyone is shooting at the same target, so nobody knows how they are doing.
They repeat this 3-4 times shooting off 9-12 rounds that day.
They go to bed confident the rest of their training will be guns, grenades and cool combat stuff.
6 months later they repeat the same shooting exercise.
All of the time between that is building maintenance, formation marching (for parades) and learning how to do civilian pacification.
The most common exercise is practicing getting into the trucks quickly to be shuttled off to a place to quell unrest.
He gets transferred to an armoured unit (he is an extra in an APC).
They learn how to change the oil in their vehicles, drive them, clean them, and paint them for the Beijing parade.
Nobody he has talked to has ever done what one would consider "combat training". Drivers just learn how to formation drive.
He figures tanks shoot 1-2 rounds a year, assuming they are not being filmed for a propaganda video.
He's deployed a few times to put down protests.
They just line up in massive numbers and the protesters disperse.
He gets out of the PLA as soon as he can.
