Just started playing this. Not sure I understand the inventory/weapon management. You can hold 3 guns, but only change between 2 of them at a time, with one being the pistol? What's the point of holding the 3rd gun?

Any tips for how to use upgrade kits? Do you save them till you get a good weapon or just use as you go?

And what should one do to be remembered?
You can always rotate between the three guns you are holding. The Heavy Gunner can have 4 weapons in total, but only the Riot Guard can get rid of the pistol.

If I have a good weapon with a good roll (like say an Alpha Coil Shotgun), I'll start dumping kits on it ASAP. After you max out attachments, the next 2-3 kits increase the weapon's base stats. Afterwards, it's only a very minor damage increase so you can recycle them for 10 data each. If I don't have a good weapon at hand but my pistol is good, I dump a few on it (for example the Master Chief or the Tec-9). If I have a bad pistol and badly-rolled weapons, I just save them.

Hmm. There is only a single keybind to cycle through weapons and when I use it only cycles through the last two weapons you've used. So that 3rd weapon has to be selected manually with a different key. Is this intentional? I'd really rather be able to just cycle through all 3 with press of a button. This game has enough poo poo going on to hit a separate button in the middle of a firefight.

How bad of a idea is it to turn on that 25% difficulty modifier that makes the first 4 levels more difficult? I figure by the time I learn to get through the more difficult version of the starting levels I'll be ready to tackle the later levels as well. Unless of course it really makes it so challenging that even people who are good at the game avoid it.

I use the mouse wheel to scroll through all three weapons, no problems there at least.

The +25% difficulty modifier is the easiest way to reach the 140% diff. modifier you need to unlock the run completion perks for each class. Once you've cleared the game at least once (or gotten to the last set of levels, the Military Base), it makes the first four levels considerably more fun. Without it, there's a noticeable difficulty gap between levels 1-4 and 5-8. Besides, more enemies means more chances at drops. Personally, I enable that modifier plus Deflection and Faster Projectiles to reach 140%, but you could easily replace Faster Projectiles with Jamming.

Yeah that toggle owns, I never leave it off.

I tend to play with all the toggles on besides Flinch, Critical, and Fragile - losing max HP on health is never good, flinch just doesn't feel good, and enemy crits because it makes things really swingy; still puts it at about +180%.

I turned that on as soon as I started playing along so I didn't even think it was possible to dodge other than using the dash. Maybe I should try without it.

So I tried playing this with a friend, is the multiplayer meant to be set up so we have different level layouts?

The props were in the same place, but the terminals were different, and sometimes even in different locations. Felt like we had desynced or something.

Never stand directly in front of it, save your dashes for side-to-side movement. Also moving closer towards it causes it to glide back, which may actually save you as well, depending on what it's doing.

Though pretty much it's just about dumping damage on it as fast as possible. Like the Last Defender (or is there actually a strategy there? I've beaten it with a few classes but I find I'm very reliant on a good weapon drop + matching upgrades)

I ended up putting about 20-25 hours into this game, but I'm pretty done with it. Maxed out the Raider Class. Had a great time.

The disco electrified floor room right before the end pretty much killed the game for me. I got to a few times and each time it felt supremely unfair. The game isn't easy in general, but I never felt the difficulty was bad, except for that room.

Yeah, I've died there a lot as well. I just hit level 25 with all classes, not sure about total playtime but I feel fairly comfortable with this room now. If the floor pattern is not good, I'll just back off and let it take a little longer. It also helps to not shoot anything unless you have to. And always assume the enemy teleporting in next to you is a suicide bomber type - because of course it will be when you don't expect it.

You can also take cover behind the wall to the next room without triggering the Last Defender if you want to regen a bit before facing the boss.

finally beat the jet but I was not at all prepared for the unstable mass

The human gallbladder is indeed a puzzle!
Unstable mass is a fuckin nightmare and I hate it so much. If your class has any invul skills (like Commando dash) it becomes slightly easier but I always have hard time with non Engi non Commando classes.

Tbh the super secret Engineer strat of "dropping all turrets and summons and dashing away until boss does" works for every boss anyway.

Riot Guard might be quite useful there with the AoE stun.

It always baffles me when hearing others having trouble with unstable mass. I pray it spawns over arena master's because it is hands down the best place to use your Heart Core if you have one (or other stackig items/weapons) and because it's so drat easy.

If you aren't in for farming, immediately take out the medium blobs that spawn the small blobs, burn unstable to 50% and kill the three new medium blobs before turning back to kill unstable mass.

Unless you've been royally screwed on good weapons or arent one of these classes with free AOE (Breacher/Riot Guard/Raider/Demo) then I guess it can be a bit overwhelming? I never had trouble with it even when starting out, but I heavily prefer playing Breacher so I had it easy with all those free explosions.

Arena Masters are much worse imo, gently caress the sniper and flamethrower redguard

I'm not sure I understand the relationship between Arena and regular Synthetik. Arena is some kind of f2p multiplayer thing, but if I play all the levels once, I unlock things in regular? Similarly, there's DLC for Arena that unlocks things in regular?

Is there any other way to unlock the "refer a friend" things? I'm really enjoying this game but I just want to play a solo single player game and not have content gated for not caring about online.

Nah they're both single player or 2 player co-op. Arena is free to play, Legion Rising is not. Synthetik has the long roguelite game with random loot etc and boss battles while arena is shorter single map games where you decide what guns/etc to buy and fight vs waves. Character level ups, unlocks etc, are shared between the two games. The DLC for both games unlocks things mainly in those games but also a few things in the other game.

Been playing this game alongside Hades and I've got to say, where Hades nails it with melee combat, this game really hammers in how satisfying it's gunplay can be.

I never thought something like Counter-Strike or Planetside 2 could be properly conveyed in 2D, but goddamn, the devs really did it here, up to and including shooting over a dork's shield to headshot them. That the weapons and items are so unique in themselves is a real blast as well.

Glad to not be really necro-ing this thread.
Been enjoying the game for a solid 60 hours, but I have some gripes I need to get off my chest.....

1) The sniper is terri-bad. Jesus......

So all the classes in this game are fun to play and have the potential to make some really cool plays,..........except the Sniper. He is soooo bad . How did they fumble this guy so hard?
-His class item is awful and scales really poorly with upgrades.
-He has very situational healing
-He doesn't even get a sniper rifle until his level 15 passive, every other class starts with a defining weapon.
-He relies WAAAY too much on headshots..... but a ton of enemies in this game are machines/robots..... that don't have heads to shoot.
-Furthermore, the headshot mechanics are really finnicky when aiming at enemies coming from above you.
-His Drone shooting is really underpowered compared to the Engineer's drone, AND the thing will shoot on its own and ruin your perfect, lined-up shots.
-His credit-earning passives pale in comparison to the Madness perk offered for Commandos.
-A lot of the encounters in this game are designed to dick him over. The Blob Boss on level 3, the conveyer belt of doom introduced in the last patch, the Server Room at the end.
-He gets easily swarmed by enemies late game if you don't pick the Decoy or get an item that lets you summon mooks to protect you.
-Bad mobility
-His prestige passive is terrible

Apparently, the last patch is the also, well.... the last patch that this game will get and it saddens me the sniper will remain this bad.

2)Some of the enemies in this game are kinda.... well, overwhelming.
The seismic mortar drones in the last level, the elite teleporting chrono-guys that will blink in melee range to you and kill you in 0.5 seconds with their rapid-fire laser guns, the Gattling hover tanks. Overall the enemy balance is pretty good, but those few exceptions stand out

3) I wish the game would let me assign the drop chance tokens to red weapons/items as well. Maybe they only become availible in the 3'd shop onwards to prevent it becoming too easy?

I'm viable ladies.

I think that's a kind of interesting take as Sniper (and Assassin) are the only two classes I've beaten the game on at 140% difficulty for the first time below class level 15. I think I beat it with Sniper at level 8 and Assassin at 11? Been a long while but I know I was really startled at how effective they felt. I think it was a little bit of luck for those wins but not too insane, for reference my favorite classes Breacher and Riot Guard I beat the game on 140% for the first time well past level 20 on them. I also struggle mightily with Raider and the Specialist classes which are all have strong playstyles that I just don't jive with.

I find for doing well with Sniper are making sure you find a good, high DPS rapid fire weapon or shotgun as a second weapon to pair with your sniper of choice. Having two sniper weapons is a bit of a trap as it limits your DPS vs targets you can't one or two shot for whatever reason. A big part of the late game for any class is making sure you've found at least one weapon you can use to just vaporize targets large and small and slammed as many upgrade kits into it as you could.

The sniper is bad though.
I'm not talking about whatever guns/ items you happen to find within the run. You can for example, run into this item on floor 1:

quote:

INFINITY DRILL PIECE
Legendary
Unleashes a mysterious drilling projectile that ignores armor, dealing up to 14 damage instances at extreme speed before vanishing
16s
Shoots homing projectile on demand, making chained attack.
Cannot penetrate walls or objects; must have line-of-effect.
Reference to the anime Gurren Lagann.

... and just spam it through every encounter in the game and win that way. Absolutely no part of being the sniper would contribute to your win.
I mean, you can WIN with every class, the problem is that the sniper's contribution, his item, his passive, his level up passives, are just terrible and he is way , waaay under what the other classes can acheive.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree? I think Sniper has actual benefits from leveling up but they aren't the most insane, at least it has it better than Raider.

And yeah, the point of red items is that if you find one it'll probably be able to carry you through the game regardless of the class you picked. Some items vary in usefulness from class to class but generally they can def carry you through early game.

My buddy and I have only ever run into issues once before, and that was an OOM crash. At least 100 of my 118 hours in this game have been played with him, so I think that's a pretty okay track record.

Edit: Actually I just remembered that there's two persistent issues that regularly plague us:

1) One of the four zones will display shrines/shops for the host only. In our experience, usually it's the VR zone.
2) If the host dies during the Disco Floor encounter (right before the final boss), the guest will not be able to see the Server progress (but will still be able to complete the objectives). The host can still see them without issue.

I've tried the demo for 2 and, I guess Synthetik 1 being one of my GOAT I had pretty high expectations. It felt ...off, in a lot of ways. Most importantly the feel of the guns. Most weapons I picked up were inaccurate bullet hoses and it felt like the reload time was a lot longer.

On the other hand it's an early alpha and I do have faith in the devs to tweak it just right.
