I haven't watched survivor in at least 6 or 7 seasons but I'm sorely tempted to come back for this one. Really pissed off they didn't bring Cochran back though.

Sandra seems legit pissed about it. She's still going on about it in media interviews she's given since the show started airing.

I totally understand why Cochran didn’t want to come back but it’s still disappointing. His arc over his two seasons is the best thing that’s ever happened in survivor.

Everyone heaps poo poo on Rob’s win because of a supposed conspiracy to stack the deck with idiots and sheep. If he wins this season it will be indisputable. He really is that good at the psychological game.

nerox posted:I've watched a few Australian Survivor episodes this season, the challenges are so much better than American Survivor now, its just so drat hard to keep up with 90 minute episodes every night it seems. When we decide we like a reality show; we really go all in. Australian Masterchef was, in its early seasons the most watched show on television. It doesn’t any more due to budget cuts; but earlier seasons had 6 episodes a week, and some of those were 2 hour affairs. They rescheduled the main political debate for a federal election because they realised it would clash with the Masterchef finale. Australian Biggest loser had an episode every week night. (The season with parents and their kids competing together was extra crass) Australian Big Brother not only aired 6 nights a week; there was also a weekly late night adults only special that consisted entirely of uncensored clips of the contestants showering, and other sexual antics/conversation from the week that couldn’t be aired earlier.

e.martin posted:Any idea why Cochran isnt on this season? I would have thought he would have been a shoe-in. Former winner that is very popular. I wonder if he turned it down for some reason. All we know is that he was approached but turned it down. He has gone on record in the past to say that he would never play again because he already had a perfect win and he wants to preserve that since he'd only do worse if he went back. e.martin posted:I assume they are doing the Redemption Island thing again because they have all of the great Survivor personalities and want to keep them hanging around as long as they can even after they are voted out. I get the idea for the ratings but have never liked the Redemption Island thing. I hope no one ever wins by coming back on the show. Edge of extinction serves the same purpose as Redemption Island but it works much better in my opinion.

They should do a season consisting entirely of previous first Boots.

I love Cochran to bits; but I respect his reasoning. I do find myself wondering what he's doing these days though. His most recent writing credit on imdb is from 2016. Khanstant posted:Yeah, I'm curious how many are actually still millionaires, or ever got to be one. Gov't takes half, right? So they all win half a mil, but poo poo, a house in my dinky little town costs a quarter million. I know someone good at capitalism might be able to take that half a mil and turn it into more, but seems like most prize winners are not those sorts of people. It's always struck me as mean the way that the US government taxes prize money from gameshows and lotteries and poo poo. It's not something that happens here in Australia.

The Bloop posted:I mean, it's income. It gets taxed. If the show wants to claim the winner will get to keep 1 mil after taxes or whatever, they could easily do so. Prizes from games aren’t considered income in Australia. If you win the lotto, win a game show, win a contest, win big at the casino - not income, not taxed. (unless you do it for a living like a pro poker player, then it’s income). IIRC contestants on reality tv shows have to be paid for their time (I believe it’s gently caress all, minimum wage or some poo poo) and that would be taxed, but not the prize money. Pretty sure we don’t tax inheritances either.

The US tax system is considerably less fair than ours if you’re looking at things from the perspective of a lower income earner (we don’t pay any tax at all for the first 18k we earn each year, high income earners pay more tax (45%) at a lower income threshold (180k). We also have a free web app/phone app run by the government that lets most average people do their tax return in about 10 mins rather than have to pay for software or pay an accountant. This is the second week in a row someone’s overreached by trying to do Nth dimensional chess bullshit with the fire tokens and gotten voted out because of it. I’m really starting to hate the sound of Adam’s voice. He really is a whiny little poo poo. I can’t stand Wendall. He seems like a nasty piece of work - you can see his real self shine through in his interactions with Michelle. I’m still hoping one of Rob/Pavarti/Tyson gets back in but barring that I’m cheering for Denise and Sophie.

They should do AUS vs US, but actually put Probst on the US team. Or maybe they could do a crossover season that is aired in both countries and counts as a season of each show and has Probst and Jonathan as co-host's.

The channel that airs Australian survivor was bought by CBS a year or two ago so I wouldn’t be surprised if Australian survivor finds its way to CBS all access in the US at some point. In the mean time I’m sure you could make it work with a VPN.

Boy do I have a treat for you. https://www.amazon.com/Voyage-Beyond-Reason-Survival-Original/dp/1432712349 So, In 1996; then 24 year old Coach set out from Baja California on an insane solo sea kayak adventure along the coast of South America; battling hurricanes, wildlife, etc. He kept a journal during this time, but at some point along the way, after travelling about 6000 miles, he buried his journals on a sea cliff in Columbia. a couple of years later, they were discovered by an author, who set about novelising them (he was able to track down Coach by around 2003 I believe). The book was published shortly before Tocantins aired. Now this here is another book on the same subject, but this time written by Coach himself, complete with photographs and stuff; published in 2011: https://www.amazon.com/No-Turning-Back-American-Expedition-ebook/dp/B005JJW7S0

Obviously there’s no way to tell for sure but the author is a legit author, and the book was being written and researched well before Coach became a well known figure. I’ve read it and it’s really good. My personal thinking is that it’s mostly true; but even if it was bullshit it’s still a good read.
