On Sunday afternoon I found an episode of Simpsons on TV and decided to watch it because I’ve not watched Simpsons for over 10 years now. It was the episode where Homer and Marge go to marriage counselling and Homer tries to catch General Sherman.

It was shocked at how utterly poo poo old Simpsons looks these days on a big TV. It looked like someone had run Trace Bitmap over it in Flash.

I started watching season 16 on Disney+, since that's the first season I've seen none of. I made it about 3 episodes before just jumping back and watching season 4 again.

I don't know what it is. Maybe the writers start to think of themselves as insightful commenters on the zeitgeist instead of comedians or something.

Venture Bros hasn't gone that way (yet). Probably because they make 6-8 episodes every couple of years instead of grinding out 20+ a year.

Watch the episode where Mr Burns becomes infuriated with the leftist highly entitled wusses that have taken over Yale and decides to start his own university instead. He chooses Lenny Carl and Homer to be the professors but they suck at it so Lisa gives Homer some inspirational DVDs and then Homer becomes good at teaching so Mr Burns sends Homer to George Costanza.

Homer, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ken Jennings, Suze Orman and Robert McKee begin to teach classes to a bunch of young women students except they are actually robots made by George Costanza so that he can steal the financial aid. Six months later, Homer accidentally causes a microaggression that makes all the robots start saying "That's offensive" over and over until they all explode. George Costanza responds to his scheme exploding with no emotion at all, "At least I have my health" followed by a dumb gag where he immediately gets hit in the head. The episode ends with the professors teaching Bart Lisa and Maggie at the Simpsons home.

Season 28, episode 19. No other episodes, only that one. Goon-employing internet website Den of Geek rated the episode 4.5/5 stars. I did not.

Stop somewhere in season 9-10 and forget the rest exists. The awful jockey episode is rightly credited as the final shuddering death knell of the series imo

OP do not bother with season 1, at all. There's no good episodes and it merely exists for historical purposes.

Season 2 has an ok episode here and there but should not be bothered with by someone new to the show.

Season 3 really starts to shine. Most episodes are really good, though a few are a little slow.

Season 4 just knocks it out of the park. Every episode is great. Seasons 4-7 are pure gold. Not a bad episode.

Season 8 starts to slip a bit but is still amazing. Season 9 is still 70% good material. Season 10 is like 50% good material. Season 11 is 30% good material, and season 12 has one good episode (the one when the kids get snowed in at school). Season 13 has 0 good episodes and they have kept up that streak ever since.

All the streaming services and TV channels are taking the 4:3 episodes of the Simpsons and stretching them out and making them look like poo poo. They're also applying some "smoothing" filter to them on top of all that. My DVD rips I have on my Plex server still look great on all my TVs (even my 150").

Disagree. I think 2 is a good season to start with since it has the most heart and pathos and character development even if it's not the funniest season.

Season 1 isn't horrible, but a lot of the episodes are depressing and it leans pretty heavily on the whole "we're the anti-Cosby show!" thing. Season 2 shouldn't completely be skipped though: Bart the Daredevil (the famous scene of Homer falling into the ravine), Itchy & Scratchy & Marge, The Way we Was, and Three Men and a Comic Book are all-time classics.

8 is where the cracks start to become really apparent, and season 9 is home to The Principal and the Pauper, which is basically the point at which all of the rules go out of the window and marks the end of classic Simpsons.

the writer of the principal and the pauper episode posted:

This [episode] is about a community of people who like things just the way they are. Skinner's not really close to these people—you know, he's a minor character—but they get upset when someone comes in and says, 'This is not really the way things are', and they run the messenger out of town on the rail. When the episode aired, lo and behold, a community of people who like things just the way they are got mad. It never seems to have occurred to anyone that this episode is about the people who hate it.
why doesnt the audience get how much he won his personal contest against the audience because he was aware the whole time that he was trolling them and making a bad episode was a success not a failure because thats what he was going for

Season 2 was the worst of the "classic" seasons because they tried to make it more like a conventional sitcom with schmaltz and heartwarming lessons. Season 3 dropped that poo poo and the series hit its stride.

That would make sense because the quality was completely laughable. I did notice that the episode was in widescreen which I knew didn’t officially exist. The smoothing filter was the part that pushed it into ridiculous territory though. I have no idea why they thought that would be a good idea

Edit: does anyone else remember when they put Bart on Ritalin and homer tries to stuff it into some laffy taffy and eats it singin “when I take my Ritalin I keep on fiddlin”? That’s something I remember from watching on TV but no idea what era it’s from, I don’t think it was in the seasons I just watched

I think that's like Season 11-13? Bart sings it at the end, after he steals a tank to shoot down a satellite that the MLB is controlling to spy on people.
